Spent 23 years in the Army left 10 years ago...love my country the diversity and the people.... Tea, toast, fry up, Kendal cake Pie mash and jellied eels... We are so lucky..... Thank you for a wonderful song ...Just listened on Radio 2 with Ken... brought a tear to my eye
Thanks for the posting and thank heaven for such a beautiful song. One of Ralph's finest. No politics, just an expression of love for our beautiful country which we can surely all take pride in regardless of race, colour or creed.
From Canada! I think more highly of England partly because of the Internet. I'm Catholic too, actually a retired priest with German & Irish roots! My Father used to take me to the Hamilton Market; it was the largest open market "in the British Empire"! Canadians defended Hong Kong in WW ll. Despite its faults, England gave us the English language & stable government, not to mention Winston Churchill. I loved "There will always be an England". We have Victoria Parks & Steets all over Ontario!
Ralph wrote a song called 'the Ferry Man' in around 1970... a total classic... Please explore the work of this great fella.... a genius... long may he live.
I;m Irish and very proud of my heritage. However, I have in England for over 20 years and have a deep affection for many of it's people and places. English heritage runs as deep as any so be as proud as any of your heritage and your home. Just don't let the facists steal your flag and proclaim Englishness as something to be feared.
Fascism, National Socialism, Communism and any other form of Socialism is antithetical to Englishness, the English way of doing things and England... anti-Totalitarianism is a prerequisite to Englishness, the English way of doing things and England... just as having English ancestors is... which is way us English are very adamant that if there is to be immigration to England it fundamentally must come with assimilation, so that the descendants of these immigrants will have English ancestors and thus will be natives as that means they will have been brought in to the English Ethnos(the English tribe),... (like I my self was), and thus are English and not foreign.
@apples091. I am in a very similar position - English through and through and proud to be so. Served Queen and Country for nearly 20 years and proud of that too. But 20 years ago I left England to live in France and am very happy here. I'm 72 yearsold and will probably die here, but wherever I may be, I have lived and will die an Englishman.
well well english people... i will never understand why some of your and my fellow countrymen don´t get along. only because of a long ago dark past? all english people i have to deal with have the biggest hearts and are the trustworthy persons... kind regards from germany. :)
Thank you for this, I first heard this played at an open mike night in Clevedon, Royal Oak, near Bristol and thought this is a tune proud Englishmen should be be proud of.
Beautiful song! I visited London many years ago, found it very unfriendly and cold. I'd love to visit England once with someone who knows and loves her. 5 stars and thanks for posting this!
Most of the conflict is merely banter. The North/South divide can be rather heated, but we are all English. I also hope that we are all British too. It's quite surprising, when we feel threatened, how we can pull together. I also have met some wonderful German people and enjoyed some time spent there. We are all of the World and the Universe, we should always remember that. :)
I am from "England" 12 miles from where Shakespeare was born....why are we proud? Let us start with a little question...how much use would the INTERNET be without the English language ?.....it is not a coincidence that it is used it is because the English took it to the world. If our only gift to the world was to help the world communicate with each other it certainly makes this a special land.
You can download any UA-cam video by copy-pasting the URL into this >www.clipconverter.cc/< website and then you can download it as an mp4 or mp3, etc.
I took a girl on a first date to the Main Point in Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania,USA.A little cafe where we sat 15 feet away. She did'nt want to go at first but she was thrilled later.Karen do you remember. Are you out there. Year was 1977.Love Tom
dejay823... i sometimes think about leaving england but dont think i could deep down.just always remember that you won the lottery of life when you were born british
It certainly is. I didn't mean to imply that England had a monopoly! But my desire to return with a local guide stems from my conviction that there's more to the story :=)
They know only of what they see....but that is the3 same in all counrtries I ahve lived in or visited...parochialness abounds. I now live in the US...one of the most xenaphobic nations I know of...but real friendly people most of the time...ah well..humans..love 'em or hate 'em, they're all we got!!
A lot of this song is about the land and the country rather than the English as a race so I think it avoids that nationalism that sees you branded as a BNP member.
Intelligent people do not hate anyone without reason and coming from another country, being a different colour or of a different religion or culture is not a good enough reason to hate. I love ALL nationalities, colours and religions. The irony of it all is that many of the English who hate Germans for no reason are probably descended from Germans anyway (the Angles from Angeln). Flags and nationalism are the worst things ever invented. Herzliche Grüße
The thing that I really cannot get over though is that ALL other peoples and countries are allowed to love their country and be proud of it...so why the fuck can an Englishman not be allowed to do the same without people branding him/her a racist?? THAT is what the damn BNP have given Englishmen...
@nostalgiamelolcholia1 Im guessing your not from Briton then- perhaps america?. Think of the countries of the UK as the states of america or the countries of North American continent. Your all from N America but if i compared a Canadian to a Mexican theyd be completely different.
the reasons we don't get along is why all peoples don't get along, we are animals who need our territory, look at meerkats. Also we have three incompatible genetic types in this nation too, what people call celts, vikings and normans each had a defining influence on our gene pool. We, the people from the north ( of england hate the south due to difference in language and behaviour, the south being more gaulic than the teutonic north )
Bollocks. “Genetic types”? Arsenal supporters (of all colours) have more beef with Spurs and vice versa than genetically diverse communities. It's just basically that some men, driven by testosterone that’s not getting a proper outlet, just enjoy a ruck. So if you direct them towards an “enemy” - even a neighbouring postcode - they’ll take that as licence to be belligerent. The joy of England is that, to a large extent over a long history, most of us have learned to say “Bollocks to that!”
It's great living here. I've got a CCTC camera pointing at my front door 24 hours a day. 100 yards away from my flat there's a gigantic array of cancer-radiation spewing mobile phone transmitters. I'm banned from having a ciggy and a beer in the pub. Yeah, it's great living here. good old England.
@spectrum99122 So many different cultures, religions and nationalities have contributed to the making of England or rather the united Kingdom as we know it today, good and bad. We are constantly evolving and challenging old ideas and concidering new ones, so being predudice and negative to other cultures just delays our progress. When Ralph wrote this song it was saying about all the things he thought made us special and unique, something you will never grasp i doubt.
Great song, so glad I was born in England, it's a great place to call home.

This should be our anthem, especially this week.

I think most business centres are like that. Everyone's too busy rushing around to be friendly. New York is also supposedly a very unfriendly place.
Thank You...What English/British means to me.....I would not deny the country of my birth at any price !!!

I wonder how this will be viewed when we are all dead and buried. Will they be singing about the beauty and magic of the Mosques?

you know our boys in the trenches would have sung this song
@persephone608 That would be a no then.
A pretty good song but I always feel uncomfortable with nationalist sentiments, whether it is about England or any other country.
Its a great song but not how I feel about England.
