    Top Tip.
    Use a water hose, wet the floor completely to help keep dust down as you walk around.

    Try a %100 natural bristle brush. The tips are finer than man made nylon or polyester and it will hide the brush strokes much better, leaving a more slick and “laid down” finish.

    did you dilute it a little bit on styrene monomer ? this roller seems to be working way better than mine...

    I’m confused as to why you would roll it on nice and flare then come back and make a bunch of brush marks.

    You should tell the people the difference between gelcoat and flowcoat... if you use gel coat without a mould it will not set... flow coat is for redoing an exiting surface.. Gel coat is for a new build. This needs FLOW COAT not gel coat.

      Looking at all the American videos they appear to be applying several layers gel coat without wax and then finishing off with a top layer of gel coat with wax.

    Liked the video not like the other videos out there. Your clear and up front with no long introduction to the job. This is going to help me redcoat my own yacht. I was afraid to paint the boat with gel coat now I am more comfortable with having a go at it.

    Whats the normal process for under the water line? I have a boat with hundreds of tiny osmosis blisters, each one about the size of a pinkie fingernail. My plan is too lift, gelcoat plane a couple of layers ofbthe fiberglass. Soda blast to expose any deeper blisters ect. Then leave on the hard for a few months. Fix blisters, a couple of layers of fiber glass. Fill and sand anything uneven. Then i would like to know what else needs to be added to the hull before coppercoat or antifoul?
    Any tips are really appreciated

    • @westcoastprojects01
      @westcoastprojects01  4 місяці тому +1

      Sounds like you have a good plan there. When you have done the topcoat just follow the instructions on what antifouling you choose

    In a controlled environment like your shop, I would have done a no-wax Gel then a light spray with a finishing Gel then buff with Aqua Buff 1000-W Fast Cut Compound, followed by Aqua Buff 2000- for a mirror finished (I refuse to sand) I did this back in 2009 on my 84 Wellcraft V-20 it still looks amazing to this day. I like your work and simplicity, thanks for sharing. Hopefully, folks can see how easy it is to use Gel, most people are scared of the product.

    I have sprayed Gelcoat mixed with Ferro brand "Patch Boost" in an Acrylic mini spray gun to blend in repairs into existing Gelcoat on boats. You have 10 minutes before cleaning the gun out with Acetone. Works a charm. If you are recoating an entire boat, an epoxy primer with a Acrylic Polyurethane top coat is the better finish. Flat and high gloss mirror finish straight out of the gun with no refinishing, that is as long as you avoid runs. Any colour you like.

  • @neilfixes5501
    @neilfixes5501 2 роки тому +6

    Thanks for this encouraging video. I have made a few replies to some comment questions. One point...I was taught to leave a thick stand-up edge at the end of each section and not feather it out like you would for house paint. If you have to stop work for any reason (dont answer phone calls or chat to visitors...😀), a thin feathered edge will not build up heat to cure properly and the overlap area will 'tripe' (wrinkle) when you restart. Also, prep. is king...scrounge plastic ice-cream containers whenever you see them, and always have rolls of kitchen paper towels at hand.

    The way to go is spraying, of course you need to add acetone to thin the product and a gun that will handle a heavy material like gellcoat. Knowing what I've learned over the yrs I would use an airless sprayer to get a smoother finish. You don't want to use as much catalyst as they recommend because it can kick up in the gun you also have to be a fast sprayer.get it on and guick clean the sprayer or gun.

    • @westcoastprojects01
      @westcoastprojects01  3 роки тому +2

      Hi mate . You can go strait over the old gelcoat as long as you have given it a good key to bond to . Go over it with 120 grit sand paper to key it up . On mine I'm going over tge original glass and body filler

    • @neilfixes5501

      Two-cloths solvent wipe + sanding to key the new coat + vacuuming. I would use 80-grit for a better key...gelcoat is so thick, sanding scratches wont show through, unlike lacquer or enamel, and you are going to finally fine-sand it anyway.

      @@gregprider3843 Thanks for the info! I was thinking of wiping the surface down with acetone, then sanding with 80 grit then 120 grit sandpaper. I was going to wipe it down again with acetone and then roll and tip the gel coat. I do not have a tip large enough for spraying it and as little as I spray gelcoat, I can’t see spending the money on a tip as they are rather expensive.

    I’m curious do you have to sand it between coats?

    • @westcoastprojects01

      Only if each coat is left to cure . If you allow each coat to tack off you can then apply next coat directly on

    Your right about not needing a expensive brush. But you also need to be qualified to use it 😁all you had to do get it full of paint. Then wipe out, then just ah touch of paint on the end then put lines in your roller marks. Doesn't hurt to thin your dipping paint ah little bit either.
