Quality songs throughout this album, which gave us the single Eton Rifles. Happy days, I was 13-14. Still my fave band, a very loyal fan base.

The Jam were an obsession for so many British teenagers in the late 70s to early 80s. No other band got close.

  • @jonteunon2977

Paul Weller started The Jam with his childhood friend Steve Brooker and another friend Dave Waller (who was more a poet than a musician) but by the time the band became known they were both long gone. He was particularly close to Brooker but they grew apart - something which was particularly hastened by Weller’s almost Damascene conversion to Mod culture after discovering a second hand Who record.
I think it is likely that he had these two people in mind, when writing this song and the concept of childhood friends growing apart, which as someone here has already pointed out, is the thread running through quite a few songs on the album “Setting Sons” from which this song is taken although a different version. Weller first alludes to his faded friendship with Brooker on the song “I got by in time” from the first album “In the City”.
Get well soon Cynthia and have an early night Chris!

      It's Steve Brookes not Brooker.

Steve Brooker is still very much a part of Weller's orbit, and I believe has recently written/played wiith him.

Good reaction both of you. This song is from the album Settting Sons which was originally intended to be a concept album....charting the lives of childhood friends into adulthood. The concept album never materialised but several songs on the album hint at what might have been.
Interestingly Chris mentioned he was looking at contacting old friends, Weller dealt with this on the song Burning Sky, also on the album and is delivered in the form of a letter from one of the friends to another.

    • @jonteunon2977
      @jonteunon2977 11 місяців тому +2

The concept album simply turned into a more traditional album because Weller ran out of ideas for new songs to fit the theme, which is probably a good thing, because rather than forcing out material to match it it he could let his creativity flow. In fact the band were still short of material when recording commenced and Weller had to come up with songs in the studio including “Girl on the Phone”.

THE JAM were such a phenomenal band. Weller's storytelling is so, so good. I think you nailed the meaning of the song.
Other cuts to definitely check out: "FUNERAL PYRE," "TO BE SOMEONE," "GIRL ON THE PHONE," "PRIVATE HELL," "BUT I'M DIFFERENT NOW," "MONDAY," "SCRAPE AWAY"...
    Cheers!

Thanks for this guys, one of my favourite Jam songs. I loved the John Peel sessions and thought this live performance was outstanding. I think this just tells the story that a lot of us relate to, having friends at school you think will be for life then gradually drifting apart as you grow up and become adults. Don't beat yourselves up about not getting the meaning straight away! I'm a lyrics before music kinda guy and my English ears used to struggle with Mr Weller's delivery at times! In this one I used to think that 'we grew up in a flash of time' was 'we grew up in a bus shelter' 😆

In 1994 i moved from Taranaki to great barrier island 80 kms off the coast of Auckland Aotearoa New Zealand and one of my best friends/brothers/flatmate moved to Australia i was living in a teatree and coragated iron shed in the bush an hour's walk to the closest road and lost contact with Hooper. Fast forward to 2002 I'm now living in Auckland after having a brain aneurysm in November 99 sitting around the kitchen table with two of my flatmates telling them about Hooper and how much i wanted to see him again and the phone rings old school ph plugged into the wall 😮 i answer the phone and a voice asked if Heath was there? HOOPER I SHOUTED yeah man it's me. I Fing know it's you HIPPIE two months later i was a groomsmen at his wedding on the Gold coast of Australia and haven't lost contact since 😊

Great song! Classic period for Weller. Could you do a ''double feature'' or ''back to back'' or ''two in one'' for Hoodoo Gurus. You haven't even gotten to the best of the band.
''Double feature'' might be a good term to use for the two song in one video idea.
Hoodoo Gurus - I Want You Back - 4K Remastered - Official Video 1984 Austech
Hoodoo Gurus - Like Wow nzoz1985 (nzoz1985 upload is the best)
I think these two songs will get good results.

The Peel Sessions always had a "raw" quality that never translated to a band's studio album. A good example of this would be Siouxie & the Banshees' "carcass". Compare the John Peel version with the take off their 1978 debut LP...

  • @SPKdesign1

This is a pretty good song by them but I wouldn't rate it as their best.
The Peel Sessions are ayeways great. They are recorded in great studios for John Peel's Radio show which was the best radio show to listen to. I don't know anyone that didn't sit with a tape in and trying to catch as much of it as they could. John Peel is a bit of a Legend.

This is CLASSIC The Jam , Wellers lyrics n Geetar cutting like a buzzsaw , Bruce’s Bass thumping into your chest and the sadly undervalued Rick Buckler underpinning it all with impeccable timing . This track is on a level with In the city for ferocity and “ in yer face-ity “ but with a whiff of melody too and that’s a cocktail that I’ll consume all day and love it . Great reaction , great request ! It’s 4.40am and I’m annoyed I woke up randomly there , but this AND Marc Bolan ? I’m having toast and juice with a smile on my face n hope to get back to sleep shortly .
