      Tom Peters think of all that slurry that can capture methane gas in an anaerobic tank. The gas can then drive turbines to make electricity when you need it.

    Got to hand it to you - you know a lot about operating a first-class dairy farm. I like how you get to everything with knowledge, skill and confidence. You are exactly where you are meant to be! Sorry, I have to add this last comment: I still crack up about your drone/power pole incident - that was the best example of unplanned humour I've seen in all your videos! :)

    Jan, wondering why your team doesn’t fill in some of the muddy zones with loose rock and gravel? I am sure concrete is inappropriate or too expensive, but grading in some stone (#3 or #2) could really help. But then again, I’m not a farmer and only an engineer! Thanks for sharing your life and livelihood with us.

    • @2008truckman
      @2008truckman 4 роки тому

      Dirt is cheap and easy fix to something that you'll always have problems with. Unless you have a thick slab of concrete. It will just crack under pressure over the years, even with bar in it. Bigger rocks work, but eventually they get pushed into the soil and you'll be back at square one.

  • @ruudvermeij9377
    @ruudvermeij9377 4 роки тому +1

    A theory: you use old car tires to hold down plastic. Tires are notorious for holding water. That can become a problem in the flies season. Flies love standing water in old tires. More flies mean more trouble for your animals; may be more infections etc. There for, tires are cut in halve. But you have to place those halve tires in a way they cannot catch and hold water. Less standing water means less flies. Thus less deceases.

    I watch you and Eric from 10th Generation diary farming. Question I have is how do you fill your potholes in around the yard ? You don't put dirt in them with the nice red rocks do you. When I worked for a farmer the day we sold our last load of cattle the next day we started grading the yard and driveway and order 2 inch rock and covered the whole place that you could drive on.
    It was like 25 loads triple axle dump trucks and that filled in alot of holes and then we went over with inch rock and that was like 18 loads and then we always had 2loads on a pile where we took from and filled in holes when needed. But every year after that once the snow was all melted off he would call and have the yard covered with inch rock and it made everything look so much nicer as all the buildings were red and white roofs out of steel or tin. And the boss decided he wanted a big machine shed cuz all we had was a corncrib gutted out in the center and we had a 77 oliver on the feed wagon and the 1650 loader tractor with no cab on the grinder. So the boss got a guy with a bulldozer and took out 300 ft of his grove going North and south and 50 ft north of the hog confinement going east and west was the south side of the machine shed he had put up, it was 54x 130ft long and once it was done we cemented it out and 54x100 we filled with dry corn, actually we emptied all our bins and we had bulkheads inside the sliding doors on the Eastside and we had bulkheads 30 ft in from the sliding doors on the Southside and there was a walkin door in the se corner and ne corners of the building. And once the building was up we had loads of 4to 5in rock hauled in and that was our base and the night before we poured cement in the machine shed we got 4 inches of rain but it didn't slow us down cuz the 4or5 inch rock we put down was our base and the corn we put in the machine shed was in their 3 yrs and it paid for the building but we had to walk the corn 2x a week to keep it from crusting and heating up. After 3 years of storing the corn I wasn't fond of flat storage. But every year we put a layer of inch rock on top of the 4 or 5 in and never had any pot holes or anything plus there was all kinds of traffic around the machine shed and heavy equipment. And we had inch rock around all our bins and buildings to keep the mice down or away. I ground all the feed with a 2.5 ton Artsway grinder which consisted of 100 loads a month
