In this installment of the Sonoma engine series we get most of the stuff reconnected up top on the engine. We inch ever closer to completion. Things are going a lot smoother now that the engine is mated up to the transmission. Well except for some of the bolts I drop but that can happen with any job. Sit back and enjoy as we move ever closer to the end of our journey. Here's some links and stuff.

I agree, I was a shop mechanic way back in the late 70's and 80's+ and Eric shows some of the best knowledge and skill sets on YT - back in my day this was all easier as engine compartments were bigger and not near as many hookups, sensors, etc -- a 4 cyl. like this might have been a one day deal with the right gear - we used to swap V8's in a day, things were much simpler and more room to work - didn't know how good we had it-LOL
Oh my God, you don't realize how much this video helped with my 00' 4.3l 5 speed s10. I had one hell of a time installing the trans with the motor mounts on and I think I caused misalignment with the clutch, cuz first drive was like a rodeo bull! Can't wait to try this with the reinstall
Eric, THANK YOU for such a well done, detailed video series! I just finished up pulling the 2.2L engine from my 99 Sonoma to replace pistons, rings, and bearings, and I watched your videos and did the job segment by segment just the way you did. The many tips you explain as you go saved countless hours and made the job enjoyable. I completed the entire job in about a week, and was confident at each step, having seen you do it. I cannot thank you enough for your excellent video work, super clear views, and great commentary.
WOW!! Eric replaced a car engine by himself with no ones help at all, that's what l called RESPECT.
GMC Sonoma (Part 121) Engine finally started, Eric your patience should be honored with 500% the normal price =) Awesome job dude!
Great job, your obviously a fantastic mechanic. I've pulled more parts from a junkyard than I can count. I always wanted to be a full blown mechanic. But my patience level and the fact that any number of problems during re-installation can occur and just cause headaches beyond belief. A great mechanic has lots of patience and can just jump back in and correct an issue. My knuckles start bleeding and I make a mistake I'm yelling at anybody around for my mistakes. I gave it up, now its oil changes and tune ups, brakes and easy stuff for me. One thing I know is respect a mechanic its one of the most complicated jobs on the planet. So many makes and models hard to keep up. :)
Great series on this Sonoma Eric, have an '03 S10 LS with the ZQ8 sport suspension but without the usual "extreme" body cladding - odd. But it was a "program vehicle" so must have been ordered that way-- Man I gotta give you credit for your patience on this new stuff, I used to be a shop mechanic in the late 70's and 80's, engine compartments were bigger and less hookups, swap a V8 in a day amazing how much work this 4 cyl. is to swap out - again less room and more to deal with than my day --
The end of this ONE video is the only place that shows where the belt tensioner is located on this engine! I mean on ALL of the internet; my Haynes manual doesn't even show or describe where to find it! Thanks!!
Hi Eric ... I'm Mohammed from Iraq, I am one of the biggest fan of your work and I love to learn from you ... and I love that car repaired .... Thank you for you always give us information beautiful ... thanks
Eric does the best videos about fixing cars
there's something about watching other people work...feels great
I was so happy when I saw you witching the Dex to regular coolant, that stuff was a great idea by GM that didn't turn out at all as planned, and has wrecked many engines as a result. Sludges up when exposed to conventional green, and sludges when exposed to air, as well as becomes very acidic when overdue for change, which eats up all your plastic intake gaskets and such. I hate that stuff with a passion.
+nik12937 That shit nearly F'd my 4.3l.
Excellent video series Eric. You have hit dead square on the nail of bringing valuable info to those of us who want to work on our cars. Thank you sir..
Good series, I'm learning alot. But I also see how impatient I can be. I'm thinking, "Start the thing already!" LOL Great job Eric...and great patience!!! Take care.
Follow the tubing from the turbo to the intercooler to the intake.
Make sure you hear the noise of air that escapes, and not the turbo impeller grinding, check for play on the shaft.
I've always serviced my own cars. And I sometimes have to use a filter cap wrench to get the same filter of that I tightened by hand last time I did the service.
TITLE should read..."one armed bandit install" awesome install sir..especialy one handed..lol
With over 250k subscribers and 40 million views I'm sure he does okay doing mechanic work on the side :)
Dexcool tends to turn into sludge if not changed regularly ( NOT every 5 years, more like 2-3 years) or is exposed to air through for example a leaking gasket.
If you change it every other year you are OK I guess, but then where is the reason to use it in the first place. It is supposed to be a longlife coolant after all.
i work in a macihine shop rebuilt engine and install engine i had the problem to alingh the trans.to engine only one thing i whould done bettef install timing cover before the pan. you do lot of qualiter work. jacques from not far montreal canada keep up the good work
Yes! I was bored and this video came up.. *getting popcorns*
Eric, tell everyone how an air cooled VW's engine is held up. That's real magic.
In case you don't know, it's 4 bolts to the transmission and the engine floats.
You should only tighten oil filters by hand. You don't need tools.
Been doing mechanic work since i was 16 now im 56 . Never thought bout leaving the engine mounts off until now. Never to old to learn things i guess.
some diesels need a nip with a filter strap because vibration is an issue, but generally speaking as tight as you can by hand is plenty.
Best idea I've heard in a while. I wonder what the quality is like.
recently the valve replacement done in {toyota yaris 2008 automatic} after that i got internal leak of coolant fluid again after re-exploring the head of the engine there were no any cracks and any obvious causes for the leak, thoroughly examined for external leaks and without any leaks,
now soon after starting the engine coolant is revolving and gushing outside when the radiator cap is open .kindly enrich with your great knowledge thank u .........yours biggest fan
Loverly job Eric :-)
If i had a car, you would be the only person i would trust to repair it :-) :-)
They do recommend dex-cool, but a lot of mechanics will tell you that stuff is not a good choice. I have fixed problems that dex-cool was a culprit in causing. Plastic intake plenums are susceptible to rotting issues with dex-cool and any other plastic based parts on the coolant system. I change all dex-cool to the green stuff by draining and flushing all dex-cool out and replacing with green, and never had the first issue. Have a nice day. :))
French on warning labels suggests It was likely assembled for possible sale in Canada.
I doubt this. I bought my truck with 91k mile on it and flushed the coolant at 100k and refilled with dexcool It now has 133k on it and never any signs of sludging. I've worked on these trucks a lot and know them inside and out. The main reason for switching is usually because of worries with head gaskets, but this was corrected years ago. I just wanted to hear Eric's take on it.
wow GM design puts most of the sensors and ignition system under the intake manifold, next to the engine mount... really easy to work on that engine
Eric, always appreciate the vids! Extremely informative. Requesting a complete install of a turbo system. Thanks.
I was so into this and then all the sudden end of Part 6!! Ahhhhh!!!! lol Ok, you got me hooked!!! I want to see it all!! Looking forward to part 7. I was curious on something though being as we have all been watching this series. How long did this job take you from beginning to end? I know when I have to do an engine replacement I tell people minimum 3 weeks. It's my policy. I take my time when I do these sorts of projects. And as I don't do it as a job, I try to be as thorough as possible.
Pretty sure it's one of the greatest cars ever made, but that's just a general opinion.
Eric, you are a spitting image of Mark DeRosa
The 6cyl motor for my truck calls for 14Nm on the oil filter. The two 4cyl motors call for 20Nm and 22Nm respectively... (22Nm is just over 16ft lbs!) They wouldn't go to the trouble of publishing those different numbers if it didn't matter...
BTW, I'm on my second engine now because the guy at the oil change place failed to properly torque the drain bolt.
Hey Erik, im surprised you didnt remove the oil pump drive gear and just prime the engine with a power drill.. alot of the time you can make a simple tool to do so...
Watch the first video in the series and you'll see why. This is a very special truck.
Great video! Been loving this series so far. Can't wait to see how it cranks up.
It's not his truck but a customer's. That's what they want, so that's what he's doing.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! I LIKE HOW U USED MARY POPPINS'S SLOGAN :)
No, tighten them by hand.
Theres a lower engine mount and then the remaining bolts from the transmission/bell housing. Plenty to keep it up for a short period of time =)
just put a smear of oil on the rubber ring of the filter,it stops it sticking to the block so it should undo easilly by hand
Those trans bell housing bolts are way easier to do from underneath.
Google It, I had a check engine light in my truck and I googled how to read it without a scanner. Turned out I had to turn the key a couple of times in a specific way, however that was mainly for dodges.
little baby sitter lady is Mary poppins lol
Alot of gms were made in canada. My 88 silverado was made in ontario? i forget where, lol, but somewhere up in canadia
Ah!! Ended too soon! :-)
Damn, I want to hear this thing RUN already! :-)
Thanks Eric
Ahhw ended already. vv love this serie. cant wait for the next one. Only one thing, Does the oil filter stay on there if you tighten it only whit your hands?
in my opinion the oil filter is only supposed to be tightened by hand
The power of Zen? How about a floor jack and block of wood across the oil pan!
Aren't certain Honda's an exception?
To torque the gasket otherwise it leaks.
Cartridge filters are another story...
instead of leaving the coil packs and injectors unplugged you could have pulled the fuel relay! it would have helped big time and you would have been able to reconnect all those connectors lol
Ahh man talk about suspense..have to wait for another vid...:(
Staying dirty :) Looking good, too. Cheers with a beer! :)
Eric, you're an inspiration to me and l'm trying to go to UTI (Universal Technical lnstute). What automechanic school did you go to? Did you have to take an engine apart and put it all back together in order to pass the state test or what?
So why there are tools to tighten the filters? Could it be that with time the filter stucks itself and it is difficult to loose it with bare bands??
make the gasket touch and 1/4 turn after lubing the gasket with new oil
he obviously doesn't film every single car that comes into his shop genius
Don't engine mounts keep the engine connected to the car? Why doesn/t the engine fall? is it entirely held in by the few gearbox bolts that are in? Doesn't that put a huge strain on the bell housing?
I had bent oil pickup and 2 pistons broke. What does it mean that they broke on the top? My mechanic said normally piston break on the bottom. (throw a rod).
Great series Eric, thank you!
"Sometimes you have to take things off to get what you need." lol
c'mon Eric, please please! upload part 7 on Monday! i want to see it done!
SD :)
I think you should of put in an LS1 Eric !!!
Hi eric, I'm one of your proud followers :) need some help, I have a Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 dci (D-I-D) F9Q1 engine (same as some Renault and Nissan) with potence problems, I hear the noise of the compressed air getting out of the turbo and I would like to ask you what tube should I look at for some escape? Thank you
I just sat on the cross member, and the transmission has another mount near the back of it.
4:30 - long handle flex head gearwrench FTW
with complete drain flush and fill would it be ok to switch my 05 mustang from gold to green
On my Honda the filter is set to 25nm of torque.
wait, so what magic power kept the engine/transmission up once you removed the jack and the hoist?
the gold color in it particles out and settles in the system and it's know to cause problems in diesels so why wouldnt it do the same in my 4.6 3v
why didn't you remove the plastic intake manifold.all that stuff on the passenger side would have been a lot easier too get too
At 4:03 will leaving the engine down while it's only held on by the transmission not bend or warp it in some way because you don't have the mounts on it yet?
Why is the warning label on the wiper fluid container in French?
So my truck has no leak no burn no smoke but I put my finger in the exhaust and there was black looks like oil
What can be the problem no smoke
Why get rid of Dex-cool? Isn't it better then the green stuff?
@EricTheCarGuy i need help help diagnosing why my check engine light is on. i have a 1988 toyota supra turbo. how can i know why my CEL is on in that car? any way i can scan it? any help would me great thanks!!
hey eric i have a quick question sorry it has nothing to do with the video but i have a 2002 pontiac sunfire 2.2L 5 speed, and i scanned it with a obd-2 scanner and got codes p0171 p0130 OR P0131 i know one is a bad o2 sensor so if i check for vaccum leaks for the first one and find one where should i start next and whats the most common problem? Thanks Eric!
PUT BACK THE *ROCKKKKKKKKKKK* CONTINUED FROM PART 5 MUSIC !!
What's the reasoning for switching from dexcool?
why would you want to GO-5 coolant aka, Motorcraft gold is a much better coolant than green
i'm sure there's gonna be part 7, 8 and 9
Or a POV like on that Police tv show.
Eric dat car dude
Any More vids on this truck coming?
he dont do one car a week if u notice in some of his vids there are other cars in his shop
thank U
But it says on top of the filter housing 25nm of torque
Yeah, the tool is to take an oil filter off, not put it on.
i know the vids are mostly for educational purposes, but curious how you pay bills and raise a family doing one car a week?
probably the starter
How can u go from dex cool to green antifreeze I know the new gm cars and trucks all recaments the dex cool
JTCG as long as it’s OAT coolant, it’s fine
i closed my laptop and when i opened it the video started playing at 25:00 and my screen was not lit up yet i was like what was i watching
So close and then end of part 6 :(
Tools to remove, not tighten
Dex-cool has been known to eat gaskets
