"Occasionally, our campus erupts into a flawless, post modern homage to action adventure mythology, mischaracterized by the ignorant as parody." -Abed Nadir
I mean, it really is homage, not parody. The way they present these episodes you don't have to take them seriously and yet they still create the intended emotion of the genre they are emulating. There are the exciting anti heros of the western, the horror of zombies, and the patriotism of pillows vs blankets.
It's wild how Abed directly says this and Dan Harmon has said similar things but a 30 minute analysis still calls it parody dozens of times and repeatedly claims it's making fun of the genres it emulates.
@@combogalis Some people use the terms interchangeably, although they shouldn't. I also came to the comments to correct the creator, and find I'm 3 years too late.
My favorite part about that is how Britta reacts. After all they've been through, she understands what Troy is saying and what it means for Abed instantly.

Yep they even gave characters like Neil Vicky Garret Starburns and Leonard lines and episodes to have major parts in. Even for most of the side characters they got their storylines wrapped up in a feel good way.
Also two guys from Silicon Valley, of which one is also thw guy from Freaks and Geeks. Also the guy from Last Week Tonight. And two guys from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. And two guys from Home Improvement. And the fat guy from a lot of Coen Brothers movies.

Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television is one of the most emotionally destructive series finales ever filmed. Edit for clarity- It's also my favorite.
@@joebunton9486 The talks of time and age, cherished people leaving... And that second goddamn knowing hug Jeff gave Abed. Edit- And the implied, grateful "thank you" in his face. Fucking pain.
Sometimes I feel like Shirley's character is kinda underappreciated. She was actually a character that differentiates the group from other school groups films. Without her the group is just s bunch of young college students (or no commitments adult), but Shirley had a family and her purse, she reminded you about that weird old woman who's trying to fit in. (And Pierce too I suppose, but he already had enough attention) I'm glad the writer still gave a thought for Shirley's story, about her religion obsession, her divorced, ambiguous mistery pregnancy, her control freak rivalry with Jeff, her fixed marriage. When Troy leaves to sail, she said "Thank you for having a lame house wife mom in your group." is when I realized she too feel insecure feeling so different and less fun and young from the rest of the group. Kinda sad when Yvette Nicole Brown is stopped appearing at the opening sequence on Season 6.
Yea :) in Remedial Chaos Theory, she confessed that she baked because she felt like that was all she could contribute to the group. But the Foosball episode is an example of her contribution to the group! One of the sweetest episodes imo.
Petion to somehow get Childish Gambino to answer the question: If Dan Harmon asked you if you wanted to do a Community movie would you do it? P.S. If you know his answer please reply and tell me
@@thegruesometwosome2831 we never really heard the answer direct from his mouth, but during the table read when the interviewer asked the whole cast, everybody said yes except donald and Dan subtly distracted the attention (by taking off his shirt) idk what's donald deal is but i think it's nothing personal (unlike checy) maybe just different career paths
I think Britta was almost a straight man in the pilot, but they pretty quickly gave her character a unique voice and she became a well-rounded character
@@ThiccKimmyGibbler In the season 1 cast evaluations they talk about how she was sort of planned to be something of a straight man, but towards the end of the first season they realized the potential craziness Gillian could bring to the show and dropped that.
While obviously it's the case that Community doesn't really have the "straight man" character, I think I'd argue that the closest to that is Abed much more so than Jeff. Jeff Winger I'd say is probably the most normal LOOKING character (and relax I do NOT mean because he's white), but so much of what his makeup is about, especially earlier on, is manipulating others for his own ends. Yes, you get a lot out of Abed as a character and there's plenty of fantastic weirdness to him, but at the same time a lot of what he's about is reacting to and processing everything external of him. In a broad way that's a fairly key element to the straight man concept. Plus, recall that at the end of the Halloween episode centering around Britta's clandestine psychological tests on the rest of the group, Abed's revealed by the test's metrics to be the only "normal" one.
The closest Community got to a "straight man" was Frankie, (who was a queer woman, intentional?) that was introduced in the very last season in order to bring closer the stabilization and slow "going back to realism of early season 1" of season 6. Her character and her growth proved that Greendale doesn't need to be kept in check, but that going on for too long and becoming too crazy isn't healthy either (as well as the whole concept of familiarity and staleness the entire season was about). But that was the point, the closest we got to a straight man character, didn't appear until the very last season, and even then she got a bit zany and grew as a person.
I felt like I was right there with Jeff in the finale. Whatever he felt, I was feeling. I wanted so bad for them to all stay at Greendale forever, even if that wasn't what was best for them. Boy, that was a tearjerking episode. Whoever wrote it is a genius.
@L2 Sentinel Saaaaame. That ending was so emotionally satisfying, I had to take a step back after watching it. And when Jeff hugged Abed twice at the airport, man...
Same, it honestly might be the saddest ending to a TV show I've ever seen because of how real it felt. It hit me especially hard because I watched it right before starting my senior year of college when I knew I was about to be in the exact same position as Jeff. I rewatched it this past summer and it destroyed me all over again.
I'm currently rewatching and tbh its softened the emotional blow of the finale lol You start to appreciate each moment they had, and accept their need to grow and change. However, in my mind they still reunite eventually and Jeff and Annie get together lol
@@OverratedPerson22 see but that’s what gets me cause when compared to his dad he’s actually a lot better as a person and although he is racist he doesn’t let that define his generosity, he’s a decent guy with a horrible father
peirce made me cry with his speech about how he never was lucky and how life was against him and then he is racist so you can’t really talk about who he is
They established the "silly but meaningful", "absurd but heartbreaking" tone really, really early. S1E3 Introduction to Film, where Britta pays for Abed to take a filmmaking class, and he makes a movie that communicates to his father how he feels about his mother leaving. You actually get that a.) his father cares deeply for him but might feel like he's a burden, b.) Abed understands people and how they work, but doesn't know how to relate to them. He manipulates Jeff and Britta really easily to get them to fill roles in his movie, and it was all to express something to his father that he's never been able to before, that he feels like his father blames him for his mother leaving. It's early in the series, so the characters aren't fully fleshed out yet and the relationships are still forming, but it's so prescient for the stories that follow it.
That was definitely the first moment of the show where I really had to take a step back and think about how well done the character writing was. You were able to figure out why Abed is so into pop culture without any dialogue having to tell you.
1 yr later.... I believe Abed's film situation was established so early on before other characters truly got their rhythm because Dan Harmon is Abed and Jeff the most, while he's a little bit of the other characters
I remember not really paying much attention to that episode, so his film just came off as random, and with the dads reaction I was like oh, they're just doing the cliche, "solve the family problem thing but dont bother with the details", we're just told it's emotional. And no.. his video is not random, and you can totally see exactly what he's saying to him. I recently watched that episode again and paid closer attention and was surprised how, idk.. not funny it was being. He's conveying a very serious thing to his father, and he's someone who doesn't communicate well, and they dont play it for laughs, they just let it be what it is. There's a genuinely sweet moment between a father and son that can be completely overlooked.
I never realised that this slogan has a double meaning by the end. On one hand it's about Greendale accepting pretty much anyone that applies because the bar is so low. On the other it's about Greendale accepting everyone by who they are. No matter the person you are, you're welcome at Greendale and you don't have to put on a mask for other people there
"mother hen? i think we're about the same age". "sure! unless time is linear". "i'll make your ass linear". "that doesn't make any sense!". *"i'll make your ass sense"*
That line - "At Greendale, you're already accepted" - is the perfect summation of what makes Community so great. It works as a joke about the Colllege's incredibly low standards and is fine and funny as just that; but then it also contains within it the shows deeper, more serious message about life and the people you meet in it. Community doesn't need to interpolate scenes of seriousness amongst the comedy - it manages to make so much work on multiple levels simultaneously. I'm quite certain we'll never see its like again.
Yeah, I thought it was a great cap off to everything else: that idea that it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from, you're still gonna be accepted. That idea was really touching to me, and I thought it was just perfect for what I was saying about the show. Thanks for watching!
I just wanted to make sure you guys are aware of this particular video. It's easily in my top 10 all time of the "fan mashup compilation" era, of ANY pop culture property. And for several years now this song is inexorably linked to this show for me. ua-cam.com/video/IIQQOPkXTwc/v-deo.html
Imo big bang theory is just poorly written . i see the potential for it to be better but at this point its sad. It's not authentic or unique enough for me. Its just not organic its Generic its just not a top notch show for me. Commintiy now thats a streets ahead show u got there. And i feel like season 4 wasnt that bad but i agree some soul was missing during then
abed is such a unique character he's the best example of an autistic character i can give. When non autistics think of writing an autistic character think they're writing the autism spokesperson they don't realize we're all different. When I as a an autistic look at Abed, I'm not him we act differently we show different symptoms but there's a few things he does that make me go "hey i do that" Dan Harmon perfectly captures how autistics interact, relating to the smallest things that seem so big to us like when Abed can't read the clock in the law & order episode or when he says he hates when they chew gum. Dan Harmon realizes he has written a character with autism and not the character with autism. This is very obvious in season 4 because the new guys don't know this.... and Abed feels off because this is like someone's who kinda heard of autism from a friend but doesn't have it so they're trying to convey an idea they don't know or understand
They also give really great examples of people who are friends with and love a neurodivergent/autistic person. They don't always get how he thinks or why he acts how he does, but they love him, so they just try their best to accommodate his needs. Just like they would for any of their friends. In contrast, Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory is the butt of so many jokes. He's a caricature of neurodivergence, he's inflexible, and everyone rolls their eyes at his need for structure. It's night and day.
The way he looks at him and hugs him again always gets me. It's like Abed is the personification of the show, the heart of it, and we can appreciate him and the show through Jeff.
Petion to somehow get Childish Gambino to answer the question: If Dan Harmon asked you if you wanted to do a Community movie would you do it? P.S. If you know his answer please reply and tell me
I know some people who pretty much love Community AND Big Bang Theory... fully equally. I genuinely can't even come close to relating to the frame of mind that outputs that. I don't know how both are worshiped by the same person.
I just finished watching the show for the first time and it is undeniably some of the best writing I have ever seen. The cast is so damn lovable! When I got to season three, I burst into tears because I realised the show was gonna come to an end. I desperately didn’t want it but in the spirit of geothermal escapism and the series finale: It’s important to let go. And hey! Reruns are a thing :’)
At first the ending made me sooo angry but as I rewatch I'm making peace with it SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS I wanted Jeff and Annie to get together sooo bad but I think the point of that goodbye kiss was to acknowledge what they had, appreciate it, and hope that someday(preferably in the movie) they reconnect. Dan Harmon was right when he said Annie needed to go see the world and grow some more, but I dont think that goodbye was going to last forever. Ik that's wayy too deep of a dive for a tv show but I've been thinking ab it a lot lmaoo
@@jacepayne8883 I'll be honest and I think I may be in the minority here but I hated Jeff and Annie together and am sort of glad they never hooked up. I felt like those two characters were wrong for each other and more importantly, I felt like Jeff didn't deserve someone as pure and wholesome as Annie. In my opinion, Britta was the right pair for Jeff and Annie should have ended up with Troy or (hear me out)- even Abed. They did tease Annie with Abed and Troy a couple of times and I really liked imagining both the pairings.
My favorite part of Geothermal Escapism is when Britta catches up to Troy and Abed in the basement, intent on forcing them to cope (her way). But when Troy tells her that the lava is real to Abed, she immediately backs off and is just concerned for her friend. It's like flicking a switch.
Siddhart Ramotar yeah I’ve been keeping up to date. Seems like it most likely will a few years down the line. Still might not happen though don’t wanna get to excited 😂
The Ending is of coummity is one of my favourite endings to a show ever, Not everyone gets a perfect ending like jeff and they have to accept that, Most shows try to have a sad ending because a charecters leaving or quitting their job etc, Even though their married to their love interest and have a perfect job (Just a example) Jeff and britta to a extent dont get what they want and they both have to live with that which is ultimately the message the ending is trying to convey.
While I agree with your points I'd also like to add that they didn't get 'their ending' yet. I think an additional part of the massage is that they are getting there at their own speed and even though the version of 'their ending' may change in the meantime it will always be possible to reach in some capacity. It's never too late or hopeless unless you create it that way.
I agree, the show treated its characters so good in a way it didnt force shipping characters, while Jeff and Annie got chemistry, they knew their differences and left a bittersweet kiss, that was really thoughtful. Jeff and Britta are true soulmates and thats their most comfortable distance,
The best part about the ending is that it _wasn't_ an ending. It didn't tie off the story with a neat little bow, it showed us that even for these characters, life goes on. They still have so much ahead of them, and sometimes they aren't where they want to be yet. Jeff's finally learning to live with still being at Greendale but pining for Annie, Britta's still bartending while she pursues her psych degree, Abed's leaving for LA but starting a whole new chapter of his life, Annie's furthering her goals in forensics with her FBI internship but still leaving the door open for a future with Jeff.
i found this video by searching "why community is great", because i wanted to listen to someone monologue about how amazing this show is. so thank you so much for doing such an especific job.
That's hands up not true lol. I loved everybody but I'm taking Pierce, Troy, Jeff and Chang over him. With the introduction of Chang I may have to give him mvp of the show.
i think the duo of troy and abed is the best duo ever written, not just abed by himself. they are both such complements for each other, and they are written beautifully. they are the closest thing on television to actual soulmates. not even like romantic or whatever, but just two souls that genuinely fit perfectly together, you know?
The part that got me was when they came back a year after they had graduated and their lives were worse than the beginning which sums up college graduates
When Jeff's heart breaks in the finale, my heart breaks. Dan Harmon is one of, if not the greatest story teller in Peak TV. The way he always finds the balance between obscure and mundane, over-exaggerated and relatable, is uncanny. It's sad, that people didn't catch on when the magic was happening.
Gabor, at the same time, like this essay expresses, that's life! Even the problems the show had to go through relate to life itself. It had some EPIC episodes and then some disappointing ones. At the end we got our six seasons and hopefully a movie.
@@laluenbaires I'm fully with you on that. it really is how life is, that's why it's great. they could maintain the relatability through all 6 seasons. but I don't want the movie. not after all this time.
Excellent video man. I think the best example of Jeff not being the straight man was when he actually, physically, went to the Dean's office to pick up Troy and Abed's imaginary hats.
I always watche community in Germany and today I finished it on English and it’s the First time I Heard- that „ I am gay“ because the german version left that out .... I now know that AFTER WATCHING COMMUNITY FOR THE 8th time 😭😭
Thanks for watching! The fanbase for this show is one of the only ones I feel proud to be a part of, honestly. It's one of those shows that you just feel eager to share with anyone and everyone you can. It's great to know so many people seem to love this show so much.
This video made me cry, cause it had made me think of a time in my life where everything was still intake and I still had my buddy and we'd do the Troy and abed handshake. He passed away last year. Things were never the same after that incident. Whoever is reading this just press f for a fallen friend loved one, and last bud not least a cool, cool cool cool person.
My condolences man.. one thing this show has taught me is that just because something isnt permanent, doesn't mean we cant appreciate the fact it existed at all. I hope that you can appreciate all of the moments you had with your friend, kind of like we appreciate the moments between Troy and Abed
@@Mocurious It's kinda hard to explain. It was just a very weird year. The housing crash was still very recent and we hadn't quite found the new status quo, yet... People were using the Mayan calendar to speculate that the world would end in three years (which was pretty deja vu, since it was less than a decade after Y2k)... and Joss Whedon had a new show on the air that nobody was watching (which was also pretty deja vu, since it was less than a decade after Firefly). It's like there was something in the water that whole year.
Yes. I watched the whole show in 14 days and my brother started watching it when I was getting close to season 5. Of course I decided to watch some of season 1 with him, and was surprised to see how much younger the entire cast looked, most notably , Alison Brie. It’s so weird how a full grown adult can age so much in just four years. It’s almost surreal to think that she was 27-32 throughout the course of the show because she seemed to age just like someone Annie’s age would have, looking like a mature 25 year old woman by the end of the series, rather than the innocent, naive teenaged girl Annie was in the first episode. And, yes... Alison Brie is really hot.
Tonza didn’t really know Alison Brie before the show... my brain wrinkled when I found out that she was 27 while playing a 18 year old. She looks good!I I actually thought Annie was in her early twenties in s1 until they mentioned her age. 😅
You really perfectly articulated why I found such comfort in this show. It never felt formulaic or like it was recycled storylines from other sitcoms, it played by it's own rules. Seeing these characters and this show as a whole present themselves as they were, regardless of who found them appealing or not, was a large reason I loved this so much as an awkward, lonely teenager (ew, this is so corny lmao)
Someone mentioned a coin toss & all I could think about was abed & the dice & saying, you realise you're creating 6 different timelines now, or something like that.
"We define ourselves based on the expectations of a society that feeds us a lie it fell for itself." This is perfect. Can I quote this? How would you like to be attributed?
Oh. Wow. I wouldn't mind at all if you wanted to quote me. I suppose the best attribution would just be to direct people to the video it came from, but I don't really care that much how you do it, honestly.
I genuinely laughed when in the finale, Abed was doing a "cool" for each season of the show, and Chang farted during the 4th and said "inside joke". And that's how Community has the only fart joke I've ever laughed at
25:24 when u said “he’s happy” I kinda cried a little. Jeff is a character who on the surface doesn’t care but really needs friends and people in his life. This show really is streets ahead.
I just finished the show for the second time, and realized that after Troy leaves “ Inspector Spacetime “ is never mentioned again. I understand why Donald Glover left the Show, but with him leaving Community died. Sure Pierce and Shirley left to, but they never had such a big influence to another character. And season 5 and 6 had good moments, but it was never the same
True that. Almost feels like the sadness and/or loneliness the characters feel on the absence of Troy (and Shirley & Pierce) never leaves the room. It always felt like the good times are about to end. And it did.
Season 5 definitely was flawed, but it’s best moments are some of the best of the entire series imo. By season 6 however it mostly lost it’s magic for me, even though the finale is amazing
I feel like that first hug Jeff gives Abed at the end is for the character and that second one was from us, the audience, who wanted to also hug him goodbye. Not gonna lie, I cried.
She was so pretty and a criminally underrated actress. Brie is talented enough to win an Oscar if she wanted to. She is also super Charismatic in real life.
I really put community above office and parks&rec because you’ll find other shows like those two but you won’t easily find something like community... Troy and Abed reminded me of my best childhood friends who will do all kinds of stupid childish goofy shit together; and I don’t think I found another show resonated with me more than that.
Maybe, but I'm glad both exist. I can always go back and watch not one, but two amazing shows. I just discovered Community thanks to Netflix. I'm kicking myself for not discovering in the day. I watched the office concurrently and so it holds a very strong nostalgic factor for me that community never will. That said I think Community is better. But it's not as important as being happy to have both amazing shows to revisit when I need them both for different reasons.
I like that even though Troy leaving left a huge hole in the balance of the cast, Alison and Danny’s real-life friendship saved that part of the spectrum. Annie and Abed soon became best friends near the end of the show, that was such a nice thing to watch. Also, if the movie is ever made, I want to see Jeff and Annie getting properly back together. The whole Jeff-Britta things shouldn’t have been brought up in the later seasons despite the first one. All in all, Community’s my favorite series as well. #sixseasonsandamovie
As much as I wish Jeff and Annie got together, I think it kinda takes away from the fact that they changed. Like how Annie goes from relying and following those she likes to finally bring her own person, and Jeff not caring at all to taking others wants and needs into consideration.
Hey, I don't know if you will see this, but, this video convinced me to watch this show, and to put it simply, it is now one of my favorite shows of all time. I have seen clips from Community before but nothing made me want to watch it like your video. I finished all 6 seasons in a little under 2 weeks and I am floored by how easy it was to watch that much in such a little time. Thank you for convincing me to watch this masterpiece of a show and well done on making a video that, on my second viewing, encapsulates what truly makes this show great.
After watching your video on Brooklyn 99 and then this one, I was quite annoyed that UA-cam wasn't suggesting your videos to watch next. I checked your channel and realized that you only had a handful of subscribers and just a few videos! Wow, the overall quality of everything in your videos gives off the impression that you've been doing this for a while already! I just wanted to let you know that you're doing everything right, and it's only a matter of time before your channel blows up. I'm definitely a fan and a new subscriber.
Thank you! The channel is still growing (at a much faster rate than ever, too), but it's comments like this that really encourage me to keep going. I can only hope the future videos keep that same quality.
Thanks, Geothermal escapism is also my favourite episode. The bit where Britta says "Oh no" gives me chills every time. She understands enough about Abed's psychology to know exactly what Troy was talking about and knew that Abed was having a difficult time.
This is the most comprehensive breakdown of the greatest show of our time. I was completely emotional throughout this whole video! You did and excellent job man. Long and short of it is: Community made me feel like I belong.
I regard Season 1 as the greatest opening season to any sitcom in the history of television. Even long running shows like Cheers, Frasier, Friends, & Seinfeld all started off slow before they hit their strides. Community started off great straight outta the gate. I love it & always will.
I still remember the deans line “you know I would love being seen agreeing with you” Said to Troy... Just small little bits like that make me love the show.
‘At Greendale, you’re already accepted’ 🥺🥺 I don’t think any other show has ever brought me more escapism or comfort. Great video man, can’t wait to see what you do next.
i watch this show almost religiously. this was beautiful, i got chills and i can't wait to see your take on other pieces of media soon. subfrigginscribed.
See, the only times I didn't like the show was during Intro to Felt Surrogacy and during a good majority of season 6. I really hated the newer characters because they didn't have any of the charm of who they were trying to fill in. Duncan was awful, Hickey wasn't really that interesting until he and Abed shared the moment about Hickey's drawings, I never even remembered the black guy's name (though he had a few funny moments like during Garret's wedding), and I've never really liked Chang (he has his fans, but I don't like his humor or his personality). Frankie is about the only character I tolerated, but mostly because she was funny at times and actually interacted in positive ways with the rest of the cast. Her one on one talks with Abed, Britta, and Annie were very touching and made her very likeable. And Dean Pelton was fine as always, but a lack of Troy and Shirley severely brought the show down
Ninja Pickle season six was good in my opinion. They did the best with all the cast members they had and had a great series end and some funny ass episodes
@@dfgccgggff7963 I'll agree they did the best with what they had left, and Garrett's wedding and the VR menu episodes are hilarious, and the series finale is one of the best episodes of the series. But a good majority of the season is just insufferable. Especially that RV episode and the leaked email episode (which felt like they were trying to recreate Intro to Felt Surrogacy)
How come you only have 37 subscribers? I hope some years from now someone will read this comment and think "what the hell is he talking about this channel is hitting 1m." Keep up the good work!
Thank you for that! That's super encouraging! The channel is still growing, but it continues to do so at a faster and faster rate, so fingers crossed!🤞
@@StoryStreet Well you're at almost ten times as many now, but I absolutely agree with the sentiment you need more. This video has the poise and polish of something from a much larger channel. Keep up the good work, you've got a new subscriber from me.
Thank you! It's still crazy to me that I was only at 37 when I made this. I was lucky to get one sub in a week then and now I'm getting multiple daily. It's honestly insane, and I'm having a hard time processing it.
Now we just need the movie! Great essay though, I always have a hard time picking between Parks and Rec, and Community as my favorite comedy. Both get me for different things, but they both share one thing... super strong characters. I think both shows experienced the perfect casting for the characters, and took those characters to their limits.
Like I said, Community has one of the best ensembles of all time. They all play off each other so perfectly and a lot of that is also due to the casting. Thanks for watching!
I love both shows too, but I connect more with Community. Its just so wonderful to see the representation of a group of oddballs from a demographic/location/status to what we usually get. And the strength of the characters and actors allows for/grounds all the absurdity. I cried when Abed let go and fell in to the lava, it was beautiful and genuine. So many shows seem to be built around jokes, while P&R and Community are built around people. (sorry I feel like I'm kinda regurgitating the video now! 😳)
The name Abed Nadir could be read as “in bed, at the lowest point.” Well, that was me in quarantine this week. By chance, I started watching Community for the first time and ended up bingeing the whole series in a matter of days, too out of it to do much else. It not only passed the time but lifted my spirits. Great show and this analysis is spot on. Thanks!
I just finish the show today, and I finished it in like a week. This show means so much to me now then any show could. Yeah I liked other shows, but this one feels diffrent. It's the writing, directing, the acting, but most importantly the characters that keeped me watching the show. This show is so amazing, the community for this show is amazing. I hope we get a movie cause I feel like the world at this point needs a movie. #6SeasonsAndAMovie
Ikr, despite anyone’s opinions on how Jeff and Annie should have ended up I think most people can tell how much they love each other and you start to fall in love with them yourself. It’s written in a way that you can empathize with every character including Pierce and you start understanding their emotions so well that you almost become them.
@@flarlix9347 For real. I've never been as invested in a relationship between characters as I was with Jeff and Annie. Their chemistry is what made me keep clicking "Next Episode" one after another until I had finished the entire series. Their goodbye kiss nearly makes me cry every single time.
Dude this is exceptionally well made. It doesn't happen alot that I watch a 30 min and not skip a sec, not even realise it was so long until after watching it. Very wel done.
When I found Community in the early months of 2013 I was at my absolute lowest point I'd ever been - basically every single part of my life was in shambles, I had no idea how to get out and I didn't have any friends. Then I found the 3 seasons that existed then of this wonderful show and it really changed my life, as I think it has for many other people. It gave me a chance to, alone in my room spaced out on god knows what, open up emotionally and genuinely care about people, even if they were fictional, in a safe and rewarding setting, that gave as you put it so well, flawed and broken people like I was at the time the feeling that they were good as they were, that they were worth something and 'already accepted'. After binging the show and crying a ton during it I really felt like I could maybe try again, to do something, make something of my life and open up to other people. This is such a wonderful show in so many ways and I would've been a worse person without it.
So glad you said this. I thought I was crazy for getting so attached to a sitcom lol Their friendship is soo pure and they really accept each others faults and help each other grow. I think even after they go their separate ways in season 6, they still love and care ab each other. Thus why they have to reunite for a movie!!!! Lol
You using music from the actual show made me so weirdly nostalgic and emotional and comforted, thats how good the show was, i just hear the episode out ro music and it evokes emotion in me
To this day season 6 makes me cry. Jeff and Annie not being together pulls my heart apart. Abed leaving hurts my soul. Everyone moving on with life except for Jeff pretty much. It leaves room for our imagination to make what comes next. Now we just need the movie to solidify our hopes
When I am trying to tell people why they should watch this show I find it extraordinarily hard to articulate the mastery that is the show. This video gives me hard feels. I really wish I could do more then just give you the same thumbs up I give to people that spent 5 minutes on their video.

"Occasionally, our campus erupts into a flawless, post modern homage to action adventure mythology, mischaracterized by the ignorant as parody." -Abed Nadir
This line always comes to mind when anyone refers to Community as “parody.” Lol I always feel the urge to correct them with homage*
I mean, it really is homage, not parody. The way they present these episodes you don't have to take them seriously and yet they still create the intended emotion of the genre they are emulating. There are the exciting anti heros of the western, the horror of zombies, and the patriotism of pillows vs blankets.
@@robbieh.1384 I was looking for this comment, my unnecessary urge to correct people
It's wild how Abed directly says this and Dan Harmon has said similar things but a 30 minute analysis still calls it parody dozens of times and repeatedly claims it's making fun of the genres it emulates.

That moment when the audience and Britta realizes that the lava is real to Abed was the saddest part of that episode In my opinion
My favorite part about that is how Britta reacts. After all they've been through, she understands what Troy is saying and what it means for Abed instantly.

This is a straight man. Community has no such thing.
*Cuts to the dean in drag.*
Pretty sure we’re now getting a movie
Finally a video essay on Community, this show is soo great even at its worst

Thanks for watching!

abed is such a unique character he's the best example of an autistic character i can give. This is very obvious in season 4 because the new guys don't know this.... and Abed feels off because this is like someone's who kinda heard of autism from a friend but doesn't have it so they're trying to convey an idea they don't know or understand
yes! abed is the most amazing character for that. also love that dan harmon discovered he was autistic himself as he wrote abed
agreed also dan harmon has autism which helps

“Thirteen.”
The scene in the finale when Jeff hugs Abed again never fails to make me tear up

Well it is the Jim Belushi of sitcoms.
You really perfectly articulated why I found such comfort in this show. It never felt formulaic or like it was recycled storylines from other sitcoms, it played by it's own rules. Seeing these characters and this show as a whole present themselves as they were, regardless of who found them appealing or not, was a large reason I loved this so much as an awkward, lonely teenager (ew, this is so corny lmao)
wholesome 😌
There's still no news about a movie? Guys, we might be in the darkest timeline.
Someone mentioned a coin toss & all I could think about was abed & the dice & saying, you realise you're creating 6 different timelines now, or something like that.
"We define ourselves based on the expectations of a society that feeds us a lie it fell for itself."
This is perfect. Can I quote this? How would you like to be attributed?
Oh. Wow. I wouldn't mind at all if you wanted to quote me. I suppose the best attribution would just be to direct people to the video it came from, but I don't really care that much how you do it, honestly.
This feels like a Britta sentence, but without the slavery and tyranny mentions
At the Vulture panel they skipped talking about season 4 all together lmao
Watched the complete because that was the only thing close to a movie
We, fans, the cast and crew refer to it as gas leak year. LOL
I genuinely laughed when in the finale, Abed was doing a "cool" for each season of the show, and Chang farted during the 4th and said "inside joke". And that's how Community has the only fart joke I've ever laughed at
Alison did mention how it is the only season she never watched 😂
When you explained why abed was so heartbroken about Troy leaving I cried. That brought upon a new level of understanding towards me.
25:24 when u said “he’s happy” I kinda cried a little. Jeff is a character who on the surface doesn’t care but really needs friends and people in his life. This show really is streets ahead.
2/10 not enough DEAN
Fair enough.
You should have made it a pun. DEANsgraceful! (sorry)
Lol The Dean is hilarious
Tell him he's a good Dean..
Dean see that coming!
I just finished the show for the second time, and realized that after Troy leaves “ Inspector Spacetime “ is never mentioned again.
I understand why Donald Glover left the Show, but with him leaving Community died. Sure Pierce and Shirley left to, but they never had such a big influence to another character.
And season 5 and 6 had good moments, but it was never the same
I love season 5 and 6 lol
True that. Almost feels like the sadness and/or loneliness the characters feel on the absence of Troy (and Shirley & Pierce) never leaves the room. It always felt like the good times are about to end. And it did.
@@meredith3267 Yeah I think that's true to life as well. Geothermal Escapism is my favourite episode, it sums all this up so well.
Season 5 definitely was flawed, but it’s best moments are some of the best of the entire series imo. By season 6 however it mostly lost it’s magic for me, even though the finale is amazing
@@michaelvessel4604 season 6 did give us the best line ever,
"now there's a man who knows how to marry his cousin"
That finale still makes me cry.... Jeff's feelings are the feelings of all the fans that love this show
I can still hear the noises Annie made when “blowing everything off” while writhing in the floor:
Bloobblublubloobblobubu
That and "boopie doopie doop boop sex"
I feel like that first hug Jeff gives Abed at the end is for the character and that second one was from us, the audience, who wanted to also hug him goodbye. Not gonna lie, I cried.
This show made me fall in love with Alison Brie. This really is the best television sitcom ever created.
Abed's my favorite character, but Annie is a close second and half of that is just because of Alison Brie's performance.
I feel you
She was so pretty and a criminally underrated actress. Brie is talented enough to win an Oscar if she wanted to. She is also super Charismatic in real life.
alison brie is wonderful, her performance in GLOW is also just as great
Yeah, same.
Ive seen troy leaving so many times and ive cried like a baby each time
When Troy left it never was the same. Seeing Abed without him was so sad.
Unpopular opinion: Community > The Office
I really put community above office and parks&rec because you’ll find other shows like those two but you won’t easily find something like community...
Troy and Abed reminded me of my best childhood friends who will do all kinds of stupid childish goofy shit together; and I don’t think I found another show resonated with me more than that.
Somehow yes, but both are difference.
Easily.
Exactly
I’m on episode 5 of season six but have lost interest and can’t be bothered to finish is it worth just seeing it through?
Hey, I don't know if you will see this, but, this video convinced me to watch this show, and to put it simply, it is now one of my favorite shows of all time. I have seen clips from Community before but nothing made me want to watch it like your video. I finished all 6 seasons in a little under 2 weeks and I am floored by how easy it was to watch that much in such a little time. Thank you for convincing me to watch this masterpiece of a show and well done on making a video that, on my second viewing, encapsulates what truly makes this show great.
I love how the background music for this vid is almost every ost ever made for Community. Meta meta. Cool cool cool.
The Abed and Troy relationship part legit made me cry, you just worded it so beautifully
I'm so glad you didn't britta'd the essay!
This is the most comprehensive breakdown of the greatest show of our time.
I was completely emotional throughout this whole video! You did and excellent job man.
Long and short of it is: Community made me feel like I belong.
Thank you so much!
I regard Season 1 as the greatest opening season to any sitcom in the history of television. Even long running shows like Cheers, Frasier, Friends, & Seinfeld all started off slow before they hit their strides. Community started off great straight outta the gate. I love it & always will.
Don't forget Parks & Recreation's first season. So glad it rebounded, because I love that show.
“It’s really stupid, and yet I cry.” The perfect description of the show.
I still remember the deans line “you know I would love being seen agreeing with you”
Said to Troy... Just small little bits like that make me love the show.
Why, after multiple rewatches, have I just noticed Troy’s boat is called Childish Tycoon
‘At Greendale, you’re already accepted’ 🥺🥺
I don’t think any other show has ever brought me more escapism or comfort. Great video man, can’t wait to see what you do next.
i watch this show almost religiously. this was beautiful, i got chills and i can't wait to see your take on other pieces of media soon. subfrigginscribed.
Thank you!
community was the first show where i felt sad when it ended
im still waiting on that movie though
good news
One of the best season finales ever. Jeff's speech in the end is so emotional
Answer: it still wasn’t bad even when it wasn’t good.
@@NinjaPickle Jeeeesus wept!
@@StoryStreet Subscribed because of how great this was. Keep it up.
Had no idea you were at so few subs until i read this comment. This quality is well beyond a Chanel with 647 subs. Stick with this, you're good.
Can we talk about Abed's "good TV" monologue though? I cry every time. Best finale ever on the best show ever.
It's great stuff, yeah. "It needs to be ok for it to get on a boat with Lavar Burton and never come back."
This is a Beautiful love letter to community. Thank you for making this
Thank you for watching it.
Damn. I cried for a solid 15 minutes after this video essay ended. All the memories it brought back. Community is such an amazing show!
Community is one of the greatest shows ever made, I love it so much and love all of the characters, they had me laughing and crying repeatedly
So late and sobbing at how beautifully you have put all this, community has my heart & so does this video even if I’m 4 years behind
"It was always about not changing yourself to belong but belong to those who take you as you are.' Pretty good.
Pretty good.
@@StoryStreet Good enough and that's what counts. #greendalepride
"we define ourselves based on expectations of a society that feeds us a lie it fell for itself" ... Literally beautifully said
This show deserves waaay more recognition. Great video!
Couldn't agree more that this show deserves more attention! Thanks for watching!
finished community and i love this show more and more every day, community is a show that when you get into it you can escape and i think its funny because thats what happens in greendale
"in greendale you are already accepted"
This show like scrubs just found a place so deep in my heart that I will never forget it and plan to show it to my kids
