  • From poaching endangered shellfish to smoking quaaludes, this is the wild origin story of how meth took over South Africa.
The use of meth, known as Tik, has skyrocketed across South Africa. It's thought that the country might have one of the highest per-capita rates of crystal meth use on earth.
But the wildest twist in the tale is that this may have been ultimately caused by a secret weapons program run by the old apartheid regime itself.

Enjoying VICE marathon today. Your shows are amazing!
If you have interest, I would like to see interviews of people who use wheelchairs and what it is like. How do they get treated, what are the plusses and roadblocks of being disabled. There is a large variety of people who use wheelchairs and I think there is a need for people to know the challenges and the attitudes of people who do not using wheelchairs.
      Thank you VIce!

I started doing drugs since my teenage, got addicted to cocaine. Spent my whole life fighting cocaine addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Used to take Mandrax and Quaaludes a lot in my teens and 20s (I'm 54) and tbh methaqualone is infinitely more pleasurable than alcohol. Not hard to see why they were so popular - you'd get this warm, euphoric relaxation - like being drunk but without the unpleasant effects of drunkenness. They lasted maybe four to six hours with no hangover.
Mandrax was the trade name for Quaalude in the UK, South Africa, Australia, Asia. After Methaqualone was banned there was Doriden, (Glutetimide) which had the exact same effects but was banned by the late 1980s. Nowadays the closest thing is probably GHB, which feels very similar (except GHB makes people a lot hornier than Quaaludes ever did)
Interesting origin story: Quaalude was developed to allow doctors in wartime to get short periods of sleep but to be able to function if they had to be woken up, which was not remotely possible with barbiturates, chloral hydrate, or bromides - the other sleep drugs around at the time.

There's a brand name methamphetamine tablet called Desoxyn which is rare and mainly prescribed for narcolepsy. Like a doctor's script. 15 mg 3x a day worked for me. But that was Desoxyn. Street meth is a little more tricky to regulate dosage, but its doable.
But, if you can't moderate, (you CAN, you're just not applying yourself) then I guess a lifetime without it is your lot.
And you will have to go to a shrink and get properly diagnosed for the undiagnosed ADHD you have, and get a legal script for the much less effective Adderall or Vyvanse, etc.
(Hold out for Desoxyn) But don't get your hopes up. Settle for modafinil.

If you have something that you really want in your life, spend lots of time thinking about it. The more you think the more ideas will pop up the more creative your gonna start to get. Your subconscious mind doesn't care if your vision is crazy. It doesnt care if you dont know how to do it.
When you see a thing clearly in your mind, your creative "success mechanism" within you takes over and does the job much better than you could do it by conscious effort or willpower.
A different psychedelic from a different planet every nanosecond.
All sorts of dreams are possible.
The human nervous system cannot tell the difference between an "actual" experience and an experience imagined vividly and in detail.
Synthesize "experience," to literally create experience, and control it, in the laboratory of our minds.
A vision is a very emotional image, the most powerful image that you can come up with for yourself at this time. This vision will become like a hallucination in other peoples mind and this could be the cause of them creating extraordinary things.

Correction: Meth was in use for a lot more than two decades among the Afrikaners. It only became widespread among the Bantus and Khoisan after Apartheid ended simply because they learned how to make it and meth is cheaper than the indigenous weed.

      @davidjones3712 Рік тому

Your source for this? Buttons (old school sa slang for mandrax) was used in the 70s amongst people of all race groups, but prolific amongst "coloured" gangs in the cape, selling to anyone who wanted to buy. Afrikaaners are not the only white race group in SA.

@davidjones3712 I say Afrikaner to mean white African so as not confuse people with Europeans.
And the discrepancy is definitely down to how there's no single drug gang running the place. As more blacks got access to the knowledge of how to cook meth it became more widespread.

As a Canadian, I wish our news networks would provide this type of info. At the very least, they could have reports such as these in the late night news programs, so kids and adolescents are not seeing them. I mean, War clips are on news programs ffs. Which is likely why there is soo much murders, mass shootings and other violent crimes nowadays. People are shown violence in the news day in and day out since the 90's, operation Desert Storm, first time live action war was televised. Before that we only seen recorded clips or documentaries...
