    Rob spent ages trying to work out why the shutter button wasn't focusing.
    This was because I set the shutter function to record. So although the shutter button doesn't take a photo and seems useless at first IT does work the focus system..
    In C-AF mode it does not matter.
    IF you want to use S-AF your camera will NEVER focus which was my problem.
    So for others reading - If you want to use the larger shutter button to record and use S-AF you must re-assign the focus system to another button (or pure manual focus).
    I set AEL/AFL to S-AF via movie - (button/dial/lever) - button function - (AEL AEL Function)
    Rob might be a good new video to post.

      Thanks. Yes, that is exactly what I do. I program the ael/afl button for focus in video and use the shutter button to start recording. Could be a nice short video.

    Rob, I have question.
    Why on Your videos there is nothing about this parts of Menu where we have Live View Boost, LV Close Up Mode, Spot Metering and so on?
    On every tutorial I am watching these parts are skipped.
    It could be cool if You show us what settings are best for LV boost, spot metering and other options from this menu card.
    I use PEN-F, so as You know its menu is little bit different than OMD :)

    In previous Oly camera models, there was a setting under the Movie mode settings for "Movie+Still". I am seeing people report that this functionality is now gone and that you can no longer setup the camera to be able to take a still photograph while recording a video (usually causing the video to end that file, take the photo, then resume with a new file but allowing the still photograph to be captured). Can you confirm that this functionality is indeed been removed from the E-M5 Mark III?

    Hi Rob, I notice you have excellent video quality when live-streaming. What camera and capture card do you use to livestream? I’m looking to set up my em5 iii for outside walk around live-streams. From everything I’ve looked into it looks like the perfect camera with usb charging I can plug into a power bank (I often livestream for 8-10 hours) and a clean hdmi.

      I use the E-M1 Mark II with the 12mm f/2.0 lens. The E-M5iii doesn't operate while charging via usb. Best to carry some spare batteries. The new E-M1iii does operate while charging.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 місяців тому

      Hi. The only thing that should cause this is when the mode dial is in Movie mode. Try changing to a photo mode (P,A,S,M). If that fails, try doing a full reset. Let me know if that worked. -Rob

    • @adambreuse1875
      @adambreuse1875 10 місяців тому

      @@RobTrek a full reset. Holly Moly, I have spent hours clicking here and there after watching your videos (the best 👏👏👏👏👏) so that option I prefer not. Nevertheless again thanks for the help (writing from France, Nice, if you come, come and visit). PS just discovered that I have an other feature greyed out : C-AF. Is it possible that is the case because I am using the modest kit lens 14-42mm ? This goes together with "full timeAF" also greyed out as well as focus peaking which is in the Manual assist box where "magnify" is available but not peaking. I just acquired the beast so all these inception issues are to be expected. Something must go wrong before.... 🙏🙏🙏🙏. PS/2 just found out that C-AF and full time AF are only available for video mode. Wonder why? Pending is the issue with focus peaking. I come from Sony where it is standard ?! Just realized that focus peaking is not consistent with the kit lens lacking a focusing ring

  • @avarmadillo
    @avarmadillo 3 роки тому

    IS there no peaking feature? How do you focus in MF third party lenses? Is there a punch in for critical focus???

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      Hi. You can assign buttons to Peaking and Magnify (punch in focus) in the video menu. You can use Peaking and Magnify before starting a recording. After starting a recording, you can enable Peaking but not Magnify. Hope that helps. -Rob

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 3 роки тому

      @@RobTrek Yes, it helps a lot. Spending some time with the camera I programmed the peaking, and it works well---better than the G9. Over all, the camera has one deal breaker: no auto ISO while filming video. Too bad, because the stabilization and IQ are both excellent, and the DCI feature is also fine.
      Terrible menu---confusing for video, but would be worth putting up with, but the peaking switches off automatically and, again, the lack of ISO auto is a full deal breaker.
      I'm a fully manual video shooter about 80% of the time, but there are instances that auto ISO is essential.
      Bummer. Thanks so much for the response.
      Just as a side comment, this video is woefully inadequate at actually telling viewers what they need to know about video and video features. Not everyone is enslaved by a camera's autofocus. Some of us are real film makers, and need to know about all the assists cameras provide in facilitating auto control. I did a five part video series on the Canon XC-15 that did not leave our essential features of what the camera provides and how to use them. I would suggest you add at least another third part for this series, because the first two only answered a small part of my questions...maybe 20% of them as a video shooter.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому +1

      @@avarmadillo I'm glad you were able to make what is available work. Yeah, no auto-iso. I appreciate the feedback on my video. I'm not a serious videographer, so wouldn't even know where to begin talking about any video assist features. Like I totally missed focus peaking and punch focus, nevermind features that are missing like auto-iso in manual mode, scopes, etc. I think the best option for Olympus owners is to either get a Ninja 5 or invest in a more serious video camera like a GH5.

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 3 роки тому

      Rob Trek GH5: terrific. But I don’t think Pani color science is nearly as good as Olympus. I just wish Olympus would fix menus and put some effort into making a good video oriented cam like the GH5. I’d switch.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      @@avarmadillo Supposedly Olympus is going to focus on video going forward, so we'll see. I just checked my E-M1 Mark III, and it does have Auto-ISO in Manual mode for video. It's limited between 200-1600. Still no punch to focus during recording though.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      Hi, Frank. I will try to help you. We need to setup a baseline. First go into shooting menu 1 and select "Reset/Custom Modes" --> "Reset Full" --> "Yes". Turn the mode dial to "Movie Mode". The default recording should be "4k 30p". Now put the memory card in. It should be a 32gig+ v30, but any class 10 card should work. Now format the card in-camera. "Setup Menu" --> "Card Setup" --> "Format". When that's done, push the record button. Look in the bottom right. There should be a timer that counts down from 29:00. That is 29 minutes: 00 seconds. Let the camera record for 5 minutes. It should now read 24:00 or less. Let me know if that worked.
