Do amateurs have to use LSB in the lower portion of the HF bands and USB in its upper part? Are they permitted to switch the mode around? Are they not licenced to use AM and FM also?

this could be true for the ham bands, but for utility signals .. it's always or almost always usb

So shortwave radio transmissions can come in AM and SSB modes. Do you ever get an FM signal on the shortwave bands? Or is that only on the FM band?

It's tuning button that u use to get to a certain frequency that u can understand or hear the voice, if ur radio doesn't have a SSB
It stands for Beat Frequency Oscillator. That is the the internal oscillator in the receiver that 'reconstructs' the original AM signal.
