    After using the websdr you gave a link too in your earlier video, i understood these modes a lot better because i saw a visual representation of what you are explaining..
    i could see the broad signal of the AM mode with the carrier in the middle..
    i could see when the frequencies were crowded and how the AM stations close together will kind of bleed into each other's bandwidth...
    i could see how the upper and lower side band signals were working also..
    Thank you for your work and enthusiasm for SW listening i enjoy your videos and your fb group.. i have a better understanding and a wider range of listening because of your efforts

    Great video! You're the first person to explain AM, LSB and USB in terms I can relate to. I've bookmarked this link so I can listen to it again.

    There is one huge drawback to AM (double sideband) as well as SSB modes. These modes are practically worthless when there's an electrical storm in the general vicinity, especially if it has very violent and frequent electrical discharges . It's not quite as bad on single sideband but still, bad enough. FM is virtually immune to this problem.

    The explanation on how to use SSB to eliminate interference on AM was great! Thanks!

    it shud be noted that ssb uses narrower filters designed for speech removing a sideband normally doesnt reduce fidelity ;)

    good lecture, another topic you might want to bring up at some point sync detection which can also be very helpful locking in on some of those weaker signals.

    Am I correct in thinking that SSB works on BOTH AM and SHORTWAVE but not on FM ?

    SSB is used so much lower strength transmissions can be heard around the world. If amateurs just used AM they'd get nowhere unless they had very high power transmissions which they aren't allowed..

    Great instructional piece! Thanks ... I noticed the DSP unit on top of your R8500; how do you like it. Think that Radio Shack used to make them, but reviews weren't impressive so they stopped. Also, I don't think the R8500 has Digital Signal Processing, so are you getting improved audio by using that DSP unit? Thanks again for the good work.

      MSEdmonds It is very basic .. but there are a few things that help ... in SSB it does tend to improve with the DSP on and set just right ... but the most important features I find are the audio filters for CW .. the powerful audio amplifier and the notch filter is a killer on this ..just get a tone over a signal and it removes it almost immediately ...very amazing for that ...but DSP units today are much much better than this

      OfficialSWLchannel Thanks for the quick reply. Any recommendation for a current DSP unit that's not too expensive similar to the one you're using. Would like to try one with my Kenwood R2000 and my ICOM R71A. Thanks again

    Thank you, makes SSB (on AM/MW stations) comprehensible. How does SSB differ in ref to SW band?? Or same structure, tuning, etc??

  • @terryglenweaver
    @terryglenweaver 4 роки тому +1

    Because AM mode is a wider band that SSB it gets more and more difficult as the number of operators share the same channel. AM= party line. Ok this dude is NOT explain ing this vs right. He spoke of both... How AM is used because it is cheap then went right into how expensive it is to broadcast on AM. This is not the only ambiguity presented in his explanations and exactly how do you expect to understand this better when in the end... His explanations are incorrect.

    When buying a portable Shortwave radio, does ssb function make a lot of difference? I am looking at a Tecsun PL310et which does not have ssb. Or would you recommend spending more for this feature?

  • @patriklindahl4991

    Very good! I have some questions...
    1. Is it possible to use FM modulation on the shortwave frequencies? If it is, why isn't it used?
    2. Is it possible to listen on, for example, an upper sideband signal using lower sideband and tuning just above the signal? Just go to the other side of the signal and change SSB mode?

    • @OfficialSWLchannel
      @OfficialSWLchannel  10 років тому +1

      Patrik Lindahl FM is used on some shortwave frequencies ... studio to antenna relay of some stations in the 25 - 26 mhz ... also some amateur radio operators are in FM on 10 meters 29.300 - 29.700 .... FM was not used much on shortwave because of the higher cost of FM equipment especially in the 60's and 70's .. it also seems to distort more on fading . you cant listen to a USB signal in LSB be cause it is inverted .. so you cant get a clear voice ... only USB can be used on USB signals and LSB on LSB signals

    • @trains1000
      @trains1000 10 років тому

      FM takes a lot more bandwidth so it isn't used very much. No the way LSB works is it's basically USB inverted/mirrored, low frequency sounds are high frequency RF, and high frequency sounds are low frequency RF.

    Dear sir. There's is signifigantly difference between 'single' and 'signal' . Your pronounciation does not differentiate between them... It hurts my ears.
