These little nuggets are lovely with a cup of coffee. Could you please remind me to “Like” a little earlier in the video. The video is over before I’ve grabbed the remote. So many thanks to you Sir and long may you continue
I remember Muskogee, Oklahoma in 8th grade in the mid 90s. The coolest old man in town had a moon-raker 4. I spent all my lawn mowing money on setting up a base station in my parents’ garage. RCI 2950 tuned (hacked) to operate from 26-32MHz. 200 watt amplifier. 40ft tall pole in the back yard with an Amtron-99 on top. The world was at my fingertips. And then the internet and cellphones happened...
Thanks for the great explanation. I'm studying for my ham general license while at home convelascing from an injury. Somehow, hearing a more detailed description like this helps me to retain the info.
Thank you so much! Absolutely excellent video! I'm new to short wave and had little idea how to get USB and LSB on my cheap SSB radio. Now I can get whatever I want! These vids are very helpful keep up the good work :)
Your video came at the exact right moment in time for myself because I got a older realistic Communications radio that had single sideband and I bought it because it had single sideband but it had the bfo knob which I do understand how it works after I go through my band spread after tuning today I got a new radio with LSB and USB and now I understand I won't have to mess with the BF 0 knob now I need to get a good antenna and figure out the rest of it thank you that made perfect sense to me I want to see your other videos
Good explanation on SSB. Also, congratulations on your ICOM 8500. It is a very nice and high quality radio. I myself listen to a small portable multi-band radio that has LSB & USB when I travel.
I realize I'm watching your video 6-1/2 yrs after you put it out, but it's the only video I'm aware of that explains SSB. When I think about it, in theory at least, if you had a really sensitive SW tuner, you should be able to tune into a channel that carries SSB and then tune down (counterclockwise) to get LSB and up (clockwise) to get USB. Anyway, I never figured it out, so even on my RadioShack and Tecsun SW's I couldn't get SSB even though the button was there. Can you do scans in SSB?? Also, is the reception on a monster iCOM radio worth the extra for reception (listening) quality?? What about the Sangean or Tecsun 2000 which I think goes for about $300?? Thanks for your video.
Thank you for your presentation, its been very helpful in my new hobby! have a cobra 148 gtl ssb usb lsb and a home base cobra 193 23 channel lots of fun
Steven Partin Cb was fun, until some asshole cut my coax cable when I was 14 and would crush me when trying to talk. It put a very sour taste in my mouth until a friend who was a ham at 19 took me to meet his dad who was like alright let’s get you licensed
Sideband will be of no use on a road trip. All road communications are on regular ole channel 19 on CB. If your interested in sitting in your car and making long distance contacts when conditions allow then yes. But just for general road use it will be worthless. They cost more money too. A tried and true cobra 29 cb is all you need for a good road tripping radio.
Enjoyed your video. I want to ask you how to solve this problem when listening to SSB either USB or LSB. Why am I not able to hear 2 HAM operators talking? I only hear one operator talking and I cannot hear the other person when he replies. How do I tune my radio so that I can listen to both operators? Cheers
It had to do with propagation, nothing you can do, it simply means you hear on that the signal reaches you but often the other station signal will not reach your radio. This happens often and most of the time on the higher bands
I have played a lot with SSB signals but I haven’t found a carrier with separate USB AND LSB signals with different content. Do these stations exist or did I misunderstand your comment?
@@OfficialSWLchannel Thank you Sir, I wasn’t expecting an answer directly from you and it is appreciated. Many of us out here are exploring and it is good that we have a resource like you to help us along. Great job and carry on kind Sir!
Hi what is the title of the next video you mention in this one you have many and I could not find the one where you talk about when to use upper and lower sideband
I have the Eton 750 Satellit. A shortwave signal doesn't play well in SSB. It plays best in it's own shortwave mode. Doesn't that mean that it's already built into the radio? I can turn on LSB or USB tuned in to a station but it doesn't improve the quality.
I have a Sony: Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band. Have a look at Amazon, for a good description.Solid piece of engineering. A lot cheaper now than when I bought mine!
Hi is a shortwave radio ssb? I am confused? Also with and SDR I recently bought there is Narrow band FM and wide band FM it is very confusing what is used by a radio station? how do I find out more to understand all this Thanks Ian
not always some Shortwave radios have SSB some dont, as for Narrow and Wide FM, NFM is for regular transmissions from Amateur radio operators or law enforcement, Wide FM is used for the FM radio band to listen to radio stations
Hi, I just got into listening to number stations using a website but I would like to get my own radio/reciever (I still don't know if they are the same thing or not). Any recommendations for a cheap starter radio?
OfficialSWLchannel If it costs more than £100 then I think I will just use the website lol Also what do I need to be able to pick up signals from far away places like the US?
IF you just want to receive regular broadcast stations on shortwave and ham radio stations .. a radio like the Degen DE 1103 is a good choice .. it's going to cost about $80 US shipping included
OfficialSWLchannel Thanks for the recommendation, I just watched your other video about what shortwave radios to buy and I think I will get the Degen DE 1103. Ty for all the help man :)
OfficialSWLchannel I have a old radio with BFO off/on switch and BFO control +/-, and RF Gain dial. no ssb button . Bands are FM MW LW SW. It also has AM Narrow and AM Wide. Can I tune in USB and LSB with this radio
A BFO is used to inject a micro carrier. A better way to describe this, the Carrier (AM) is the center of the signal. Above center, is the Upper Side band. Below, is the Lower. These are purely modulation that modulate the carrier. The closer to carrier (center) the lower the frequency of amplitude (Bass) and the farther is higher (Treble).
Side band? Ever see Star Wars (first movie, episode IV) - ship to ship in the Death Star scene at the end - side band with the clarifier slightly off - either high or low.
Beautiful receiver, congratulations. I do own a SDR that I use as a receiver but I can not install big antenna for space reasons, then my parents do not want to steer clear of antennas on the roof. Patience. For the moment I use a discone, I enjoy it the same with the USB FAX weather and Ham radio. Greetings.
question for you. I am a newbie to this. I got my technician's license and plan on getting my General in the next month or so. I want to have a base station of sorts for most of my use but would like to have a base I could use on a field day for scouts disaster training which is 2 times a year. What type of a radio for new person should I get? someone what of a budget of 500 or less. I know its makes people cringe but thats what I got for a allowance from the other person that holds my money.. LoL
I've always known about radio and could build radios and I know schematics and tubes and transistors but I never understood the terminology about ham what it consists of until the other day basically I met someone that tried to explain more of it the way I understand it with single sideband I can communicate with some ham operator heading right or wrong? there is no carrier. There are often some frequencies populated with USB and LSB signals , happens often in the pirate bands in 6 MHz
