"We must keep a system that will enable this place to stand our and prosper and attract talent; and as long as we attract talent and we've got security and we keep an open system which treats everybody fairly and equally we will succeed"
And that essentially is what kept Malaysia and Singapore apart.

Realistic, pragmatic, uncommon common sense, non-ideological, a real problem solver, unassuming and down to earth, he along with the PAP raised Singapore from 3rd world status to 1st world status in a generation. From where I sit Singapore is lucky to have him. It's hard to imagine the Singapore of today coming about without him. So what if it is one party rule and somewhat authoritarian? It's what was needed given the exigency of the time. Democracy at that time would never have worked and Singapore would have collapsed with sectarian violence and civil chaos. Singapore would have been still born. Democracy only works in a healthy way with participation of an informed and educated electorate and a sense of common purpose. You Singaporeans should be thankful. He is a brilliant leader. Rare indeed.

Everyone thinks the grass is greener on the other side. But let me assure you, we still have to clean our arse and add fragrance to the latrine from time to time.
Watching a mere vid and listening to generic 'wisdom' comments from LKY doesn't equate to utopia. I for one don't believe in utopia and in terms of liberty and true expression in developing as an individual, the US had that platform. Not singapore, Singapore can afford you such liberties if you're very rich. Not for the average Tom dick or Harry.

You could tell the comments he made about Islam starting @28:50 somewhat riled the female interviewer.but every word he said was (and still is) true. One thing I did admire about LKY was that he cut through all the politically correct bullshit and told us what he really thought and not what we wanted to hear. For that, he has my respect.

yeah i agree but shes smart ...she knew how to answer him. yet what he said was true. about how he and othman wok and the other ministers used ot go out , drink beer and eat together. nowadays they ask halal> clean this , and that...watch p.ramlee movies. he worked in clubs and as a musician he showed much of that lifestyle in his movies..clubbing, dancing with girls in tight kebayas. about 10 y ears or so , my muslim friends used to tell me those arent good movies and shouldnt watch. I was shocked. as a minority race in spore, I never felt any bias. we had muslim neigbours and friends. no problem...things have definitly changed...The muslims are more educated now, but more ingrained in the teachings of islam...going one step back sometimes....My daughter who was in primary school was the butt of some very insensitive comments . I did not take action as they were her primary one classmates and not responsible for their words...but they are reflective of the adults they come from

He might have been old while giving this Interview but his smartness and intelligence yet is mind blowing- the way he answers is like clean cut surgery - job is well done , point is well made and it leaves the impression in your mind for days. He rightly judged the Nokia, Ikea and all the concerns growing around and his point of view on each one of them is Simply Brilliant!!! I agree the journalist would have been more smarter to extract much knowledge out of such bright mind! Such leaders are exceptional and rare Gems on planet- born once a Century an any country who is lucky enough to get such leadership is bound to shine high.👏👏

When I was younger, I used to dislike the LKY authoritarian style of governance. Perhaps due to popular American media, music, and film which boisterously preach and propagates freedom that feed youths' rebellious nature.
Now that I am living in America, I don't feel this part of the world is any better than Singapore. Every now and then, you will hear mass shootings or drug related murders on the news. I have lived here for several years, and I have grown accustomed to such danger as a cost of living in the states. The welfare system is so abused that the some could sit at home and watch TV all day and collect unemployment and disability checks from the government, yet the middle class is shrinking due to heavy taxation to pay for the so-called "social safety net" and welfare, plus the wasteful public spending on military and economic stimulus to "create jobs" at tax payers expense.
Both Democrats and Republicans are afraid to tackle on problematic domestic issues like drugs, gun violence, immigration, and abuse of social welfare because of populist democracy. Politicians are not interested in investing in long run, but are willing to do what it takes to win votes, to get campaign contributions from corporations, to get them re-elected.
That is why the US and many European nations are in waist-deep in debt. "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." - Sir Winston Churchill. Democracy free the masses by tyranny and dictatorships that enslave the people for the good of one man. LKY has proven that a good government with genuine care for his people is better than democratic system, except statesmen with LKY's vision and incorruptible moral character are hard to come by.

now someone from USA speaks. I frequent UK and I do not see how the democracy works here too. Before everyone wants change and all that, I suggest we think about it carefully, look at other countries, go spend longer times there (not as a tourist please) before you make a proper judgement for yourself of where the gov has done well and where poorly. Evaluate as if you are the government. I always find people who present arguments against the gov as people who only think about their own well being. Be selfless for once, because each and every policy made, some people will gain and some people will lose.

Lastly it so refreshing to see a leader who really cares about his country deeply.
Its not about the races or religions in Singapore or national pride only but its about keeping a young country alive in these turbulent economic times.
I'm a Puerto Rican/ Colombian but my family going back 5 generations, people which I do not know, where from Spain and Native Americans and the ones from Spain were from Africa and Europe and the Middle East. The Natives where from Asia.
My point is that nobody is purely from where they "think" they are from. People move and risk there lives to get there children to a safe and prosperous place. The Chinese, Malays, Indians plus any new migrants that make up the country become the real people of Singapore.

It’s 2018 now. I look at what’s going on in Singapore, what’s going on with our neighbors and what’s going on with US, I must say I respect the deep thoughts that LKY had put into all these issues and his foresights. We can see how populism has taken over many countries. Are they better of because of that? I don’t think so. I do hope Singapore will continue to be run by meritocracy and not succumb to the very same false promises that many populists politicians in other countries have lied to their people.

MM Lee Kuan Yew sees the world through pragmatic eyes, sometimes hard but always clear. An extraordinary mind and he does this small island proud.
Listen carefully as there is no resort to insults and/or the language of the gutter. He is a proud, intelligent man with great wisdom and conviction. And yes, he has held power jealously but he does so, I believe, because he truly believes Singapore deserves intelligent, strong leadership and he fears most of all Singapore slipping back into an abyss.

6:05 Perceived climate of fear and intimidation of speaking out to cause dissent.
    8:40 The "chilling effect"
9:30 "By the time you're past 30, your character is formed. You will not change."
9:50 “Everybody has a style, and that style is partly innate in the experiences that you have gone through. I would not have been so robust
10:15 “Democracy does not necessarily lead to better governance, stability and prosperity...The greatest attraction is that you can change governments without violence. The greatest challenge of China is that you can only change governments by rebellion.”
11:50 “Supposing we had a recession and an incompetent government, and then tide over and jobs were lost massively, I think you’re going to get a rebellion of some sort, and tough had I not had communists to contend with.”
14:12 (Policymaker compensation) “We must keep a system which will enable this place to stand out prosper, and attract talent. And as long as we attract talent, we’ve got security, and we keep an open system which treats everybody fairly and equally, we will succeed.”
25:40 *Pressure of envy is inevitable. The alternative is slow growth, disparity will still be there on the high end and low end - because it’s globalization - and we’ll all be poorer. Because if you do away with the foreign talent and the foreign workers, providing competition, our
GDP will go down by 2% - 2.5%.*
26:45 *I don’t think we can redistribute in a way which will remove motivation. Our biggest redistribution is capital gains - everybody gets a home (sold a home minus land costs). So in other words, immediately you start with chips on the table.*
33:18 “[Muslims] are all divisive. I’m a believer, you are not.” (Halal / Kosher washing machines, non-Halal, etc.)
36:30 The spread of Christianity among the higher educated Singaporeans: “The broader explanation for this conversion to Christianity is because Buddhism Taoism and ancestor worship to the Western educated is not convincing.”
38:45 There are certain Chinese rituals that will not change, and the lower educated still believe in the old pantheons of the Chinese gods and goddesses - Qaun Yin, etc.
49:14 Will the Singapore government listen to you (Green / clean energy) if they experience low or negative growth? They want to meet their immediate needs - which is 1) employment, 2) raise living standards, 3) avoid social unrest.
    51:16 LKY’s home

Young Singaporean if you do not appreciate what you have, move to SE Asia or the US, you will miss LKY. You may dislike him but he was far better than any leader in this world. No one is perfect, they all corrupt, but it is a give and take the game is that your guys must keep checking them and make sure they are not getting too big with a corporation like the US, or too Authrorithy like SE ASIA.
For the people who against LKY you may feel cheated, but you are still in a much better position than American and the less of the world. The interviewers did not truly understand the political governance, especially, a long-haired woman. Mr concerned citizen well said, now you answer to yourself. Look at what is happening in Hong Kong from 1997 till today .....!
It is a scary example of what will happen or could still happen to Singapore if not for LKY strong leadership .....!
Bad opposition in Parliament is the reason why nothing positive can be done to improve the livelihood and housing of the working class people in Hong Kong.....!

Singapore and Hong Kong shares similarity in terms of geography location and dependence on water supply from the hinterland.....
Singapore was fortunate to have been forced out of The Federation of Malaya, although *it did not seem to be so* at that time....
Singapore would have been the first *one country two systems* going by the *conditions* put forward by the then Federation of Malaya government to effect the merger....
But that is where the similarity *ends*....
Hong Kong was binded by the first Opium War contract that gives Britain a legal reason not to decolonise and leave, even though there are sufficiently qualified & educated people in HKG during the 60's capable enough to run the place at that time.....
For 155 years, the British ruled HKG with a iron hand....they did not give HKG democracy and did nothing to elevate the poor working class from their bad living or working conditions....
The working class have to hold down two jobs, just to put food on the table and pay the rent for their tiny little bed space that they called home.....
They were not given the opportunity or the liberty to elevate their education qualification and to better themselves.....HKG people of that generation are very hardworking and willing to lift themselves out of proverty if given a little help.....how do one do that if they have to hold down two jobs just to survive.....
The British Colonial adminstration gave the people of HKG false hope; just before handing her back to China in 1997, under another 50 years binding contract to give themselves time to stir unrest amongst the population against their Motherland....
Asking for independence should have been done in 1964's to 1974's when China was closed up and too involved in the Cultural Revolution for more then 10 years to respond, but did the British do that.....?! THAT IS A BIG FAT NO.....!!!
Did the people of HKG raise up and fight for their Independence back then.....unfortunately again it is a NO....!
Now is not the appropriate time to ask for Independence, but it is the appropriate time for a final merger and return to the Motherland.....China is now rich and full of opportunities to secure for yourselves; if not then your children, a good living and education plus opportunity to move overseas, if you are still not happy with the Chinese government after you have achieved some success economically.....
Talking about Democracy; Liberty and Freedom without economic stability of any sort; is putting the cart in front of the horse, it is illogical and does not work.....
History have documented such situation enough to make it an accepted general concept.....how is it that the people of HKG do not see that......?!

Sadly, MM Lee's policy of building the intellectual capacity of his people has backfired; that it has created a class of intelligentsia who will not stop short at questioning every single move, change, reform, intention etc. cast over Singapore. This group or rather class, has been born and bred in comfort and uncompromising times, and might have lost touch with how difficult Singapore has been built over the years. They preach about freedom but are they willing to pay a hefty price for it?

All he is saying is that he would like to see a good fight, only a tough, hard opponent would be suitable for Singapore's leadership in an environment that faces many threats and challenges. But considering the tactics utilised, I think it would be extremely difficult to provide a credible challenge to his leadership to emerge only from within the confines of Singapore ! It was a case of double portions of terror for people in SEA after the Japanese Occupation followed suit by the communist insurgency in that period of time that threw MM Lee into the political arena. A very tough time, testified by many first-hand people's accounts who are still living today. MM Lee fore-warned that if the younger generation today have forgotten what their forbearers have gone through, they have lost time-tested values that keep a strong Singapore stronger! True that it is the people that builds a nation, but to have a leader to guide how it is to be built is even more important. At his level of position, he ability to influence is greater than anyone else and you should be glad it is not someone else who was leading the helm.
If you had a group of ants but have no one to guide them, the ants would have build aimlessly. His job lies in providing the system and framework that allows people to carry out his visions effectively.
