Picking up a rabbit that HATES being picked up

  • This adopted rabbit hates being picked up. The rabbit hated being picked up the first time, and the rabbit has hated it every time since - being held or picked up basically makes the bunny become a mad rabbit / angry rabbit / enraged rabbit. It's kind of like what happens to the Incredible Hulk, except more intense. What do rabbits do when they fly into a rage? They pretend bite at you and angrily take bites of carrots just to fling them at you, and then spit them out all over the place. Rabbit teeth are very sharp and can be very scary! Fortunately the rabbit does his best to restrain himself and not actually bite humans. Thank you, bun!
Are you wondering how to hold a rabbit? This is one way to hold a rabbit, but there are others. The rabbit hates them all. Why does the rabbit have such a problem making a rabbit picked up and rabbit held video? We have no idea, but it must stem from his troubled past. (He was found abandoned outside in the snow and the shelter said it took three weeks for him to be caught.)
The rabbit has gotten much better being around humans, and does not mind humans petting him anymore. After you set him down from being picked up and held, he engages in an epic protest, and definitely holds a grudge, usually until dinner time. However, the length of these protests is lessoning, fortunately.
We have received differing rabbit care advice on holding a rabbit. There's one school of thought that perhaps it's better for him to get totally comfortable in his new home with his new humans before picking up the rabbit or holding the rabbit. On the other hand, the sooner we begin the process of getting him used to being picked up and held, perhaps the easier it will be. We certainly do not want to bother the beast, but he has to be held when his nails are cut, and when he goes to the vet for his checkups. So it's much better, and safer, if he can calm down and get used to it.
Here's some additional background: We adopted a rabbit! We've given him a few gifts so far so that maybe he stops hating us. The rabbit is scared of lots of things, but is slowly warming up. Adopted Rabbit is still a skittish rabbit / scared rabbit, but we remain undeterred, and will redouble our efforts to win his love!
We love the little adopted rabbit, but so far, the adopted rabbit hates us. We thought we were good at rabbit petting, rabbit feeding, and rabbit holding, and most other rabbit care activities, but we have now realized that we are actually not that good with rabbits, we were just good with Pipkin rabbit. To be blunt, after adopting this new rabbit, we realize we have no special rabbit skills, but we will do our best, and endeavor to get Adopted Rabbit to love us as much as we love him! Maybe one day we can even make a rabbit learns he is adopted video.
We are still trying to get the rabbit to like us - bribing him with food and coaxing him with food. You would think the bunny would run out when coaxed with food, but he is still a scared rabbit. Maybe one day he will like making rabbit eating videos, or rabbit ASMR videos, or rabbit tries foods for the first time videos, or waking a sleeping rabbit by surrounding him videos, or a rabbit learns he is adopted video, but that day is not today :) However, the adopted rabbit is slowly warming up to us. He is sometimes a skittish rabbit and sometimes a mad rabbit / angry rabbit, but he does really like being a free roam rabbit / free range rabbit. He does rabbit binkies and rabbit 500s / bunny 500 (rabbit running like crazy around the house).
Thanks for checking out Pipkin, Adopted Rabbit Pigpoke, and our rabbit channel. We hope you think Pipkin and Adopted Rabbit are the the cutest rabbits ever. Pipkin really enjoyed making videos - ASMR videos in particular! We don't know what Adopted Rabbit likes yet, but hopefully he likes eating! Pipkin and Adopted Rabbit are both free range rabbit / free roam rabbit and we all enjoy making cute rabbit videos. If you'd like to see more cute rabbit videos, please watch some of our other work!

"Don't let the fear of falling keep you from flying."
    - Pipkin, and some other famous person, probably
Regarding picking up Pigpoke - there seems to be two schools of thought: 1) If he doesn't like being picked up, don't pick him up, and 2) He needs to be comfortable being picked up for nail cuttings, vet appointments, etc. What do you think? Should we keep trying to socialize him or let him be? He seems to be more comfortable each time, but he engages in epic protests once he is set down, and remains skittish around humans for days afterward. Thank you for your help! :D

We thought the same, Liz! He is very attuned to any little signal though. He doesn't mind one hand, but if he sees a second, he knows you could pick him up, so runs away. If you feed him banana to lure him to be picked up, he runs away from bananas next time. It is very exhausting! Thanks for your encouragement!! :D

I saved a wild rabbit 3 years ago and I never pick him up because it is so stressful. The 1st few months he was on the run but slowly he started coming to me. I spent a lot of time sitting on the floor and letting him come to me and of course he expected a treat for his bravery. He has the run of the house, is spoiled and now he follows me and is either sleeping next to my chair or in it. Every evening he jumps up on the back of the sofa and waits until I come and sit right below him, then he scoots forward to my shoulder and literally falls asleep half on me and his back half still on the back of the sofa. After about half an hour he hops down and slowly creeps to my lap so he gets petting until he's had his fill. Most everything is on his terms but the stress to him being forced to be picked up was just to much. A lot of patience and time has brought trust and he is happy and the best friend I could have. As far as his vet visits I put his carrier on the floor with a treat inside and let him go in on his own. I hate taking him as much as he hates going but when we get home he hides for a few hours and then we are back to our regular routine and the happy starts again. I love your videos and good luck to you and your bunny.

Pigpoke could sense you had an ulterior motive at the beginning 🤭He’s absolutely so adorable 🍓💕 It’ll be necessary to pick your bunny up at times so best if they’re comfortable with it. So it’s good to keep working at it bit by bit, always making it positive with treats and cuddles and such. Some buns are perfectly comfortable from the get go, but other buns are very skittish .. and with a rescue bun you never know what experiences they’ve had before you adopted them. Learning to be picked up took a looong time and lots of patience and practice for my very skittish rescue bun but in time she she actually enjoyed it, she’d even ask to be picked up for treats and cuddles.🤞💕

Omg this story is so close to our Bunny. Our bunny was rescued from a hoarding situation and had a very rough beginning of life. She does not like to be picked up, but it’s getting used to it. We’ve had her for two years. She doesn’t hold a grudge anymore after we put her down because she gets treats. Her favorite treat is all of them. Took us nine months to get her to let us pet her. But she loves it now. She is a very happy bun now.

Awwww haha such a cutie. The way he looks up hahhaa...I hope he gets used to it soon so that he can get both walks and cuddles at the same time in his parents' arms 🥰❤
Idk if this will help but what worked for my bun was that...it would be easier getting her more comfortable on myself sitting first and then walking around after she relaxes a bit and then putting her down shortly after...I did it frequently but for a very short amount of time at first and then decreasing the amount of time I spent sitting and just walking around...and she got used to it.
When I first got her, she was already around 6 months old and very...skittish since she was raised for...meat. It literally took 2~3 years before she got used to me. She would kick away when I tried to pet her and if I managed to hold her up, it was very dangerous as she would struggle for her life.
Bunnies are so worth it, they are such adorable loving fun babies. It warms my heart how you guys treat your lil fluffy bun ❤

You need to make him feel more secure underfoot. My male bun was the same and he would nip me if I held him too long. It was his way of telling me he wanted down.
Try and hold your bun horizontally across your body (rather than vertically) so that one arm can go under him to hold his feet, and the other arm can secure his top half to you. You can pat easier this way too.
    Beautiful bunbun! Good luck.

Theres this quote i love from a bird trainer: be consistently inconsistent. If he associates 2 hands has being picked up, then when you interact with him. Act as if you were gonna pick him up, w 2 hands, but dont actually. Pet him w 2 hands, give him treats w 2 hands and end the session on a good note. And then another day, work on desensitization to being picked up. If you change it up, then he wont know when youre gonna actually pick him up. That combined with the desensitization might help. Ofc im an amateur but its just going off of what ive learned. Good luck youre doing great

Pigpoke really does not like being picked up, you can see it in his face that he is so not happy.
I am not sure if it is because of fear from his early trauma or he is just being stubborn.
Pigpoke has an instinct to avoid being handled but can still be lured by food.
We do not know what went on before and when he was in the Shelter.
In time he will understand how lucky he is to have two such wonderful kind people looking after him, whilst many animals are still left in shelters unwanted and unloved.
I know a lot of rabbits do not like being picked up but he must learn to trust, as there will be times when this can not be avoided.
The way he looked at his Dad, he really gave him the evil eye.
If he were really traumatized I do not think he would eat anything and wriggle more and jump out of his Dad’s arms.
I also think he is clever enough to know that neither Dad or Mum would ever hurt him.
Sweet Angel Pipkin seemed to enjoy being made a fuss of and being picked up but he was a much older rabbit.
Pigpoke is full of Bunny Attitude and not afraid to show his displeasure.
He does not like to be put in a vulnerable position.
In time he will learn to be picked up, without hostility, he is not a nasty rabbit as he did not bite his Dad but clever enough to stare at him to make it known he is not happy.
He may never love being picked up but learn to tolerate it and maybe eventually even love it in time.

I hope that in time Pigpoke is comfortable with being picked up and cuddled. He really needs to be able to be handled for grooming needs so I think working with him is the best course of action. Needless to say, Male Human may have to learn to cope with some bunny nips, but those should diminish with time.

Pigpoke is not sure what this up in the air game is, but he's not a fan! Some of the treats were ok, but he prefers non up in the air dining! He is a very grounded bunny and likes to have his bunny feet planted firmly on the ground (or possibly on someone's lap). 😉🐇🥰

Bunnies do not like to be picked up. Picking them up can he dangerous for them if not done properly. It can snap their back if they kick around wildly while being suspended from the ground. I only pick mine up only when necessary. Grooming, bring indoors or out. But mostly, I allow them to do their own hopping.
I have 2 pet bunnies. In Doing my research, that is one of the first things I learned. I’ve had the privilege of having them for 1 year so far. They live in my home. My husband had me do my research before bringing one home. Instead, I brought 2 home. I love them so much! They have such cute personalities. I love yours. So adorable. 🥰
Please don’t feel like I’m being mean, because I’m not. Just sharing a bit of what I learned.

i say desensitize him like you are doing and.expect protests and bites but your calm demeanor was perfect. since he is not comforted by petting I would focus on holding him and giving treats. this feels out of his control for him, so lots of rewards while holding him. as he learns nothing bad will happen, and he will be released soon,he will submit. I would pet him on the ground so he can choose when to run away. its OK that he shuns you for days later,as this time of being mad at you will get less over time. "I'm spitting out all the treats to show them I AM ANGRY!! Oh, I love Cheerios though!! maybe they won't notice that I only spit out half of it!" soo cute!

Keep it up guys, he's getting there. he should get more comfortable with being picked up over time but it could take a few more months. It might help if you move slowly when handling him and picking him up. You could also try cradling him like a baby, my dutch bun didn't mind that.

I pick up the bunny, she gets her back legs going a million miles an hour, I get scratches on my arms, hands, stomach, whatever gets in the way…even when treats are involved. I don’t get it. The day we found her, in that cold, wet parking lot, she practically leapt into our arms, like “my savior!! Pleaser, carry me away from all this darkness and despair, I am yours!”

    • @slwrabbits
      @slwrabbits Рік тому +1

Try to get the butt and back legs supported quickly and confidently. She may be more comfortable with a scoop technique where you go down to her and essentially tuck her against your torso before you even get off the ground. They hate being unsupported the most, try to make her feel like she is just as securely snuggled against you in your arms as she would be with all four feet flat on the ground.
Hard to describe without showing you! Sorry.
