    Good clip! I've done the same thing to my Fishcat. What you need to do is to make a few holes in your box.That unit needs to be cooled (hence the holes on the housing)if not it won't last long!

      Looks great , love the idea but aren’t you concerned about it overheating? The holes in the sheet metal are for heat dissipation and you have it in an air tight container which it needs to be but it stops any heat from dissipating.

      You can use a fan from an old desktop PC. They work great.

      @@mylesstandridge1111 Doesn't "really" have to be air tight. I use a PC fan on mine and can go full throttle for hours without overheating. It's still shielded from water. I need to make one of these videos but I'm just too lazy. I LOVE my baby pontoon, lol.

    Will, Good video, useful tips but it's Pulse WIDTH Modulator. The PWM chops up the D.C. current into various "widths" of conducted electrical current segments from 0%- no current conducted (OFF) to 100% fulltime conduction(FULL SPEED)

      That's a great question. One person had commented that I should have venting holes in my fancy sandwich box due to heat. The next time I was out I regularly checked to see if it was getting too hot. It never did. Hope to see you out there!

    Pontoon boats are awesome and very flexible. I modded my xt in a very similar fashion with batt/emotor/ff/sidescan. Lake fishing sucks in these boats. I undid everything. These boats really shine with simplicity. Drift fly fishing, micro skagit style. Read the river. No fisffinder garbage. No heavyass motor/battery. No registration. Use your feet with fins and oars. River runs only. Best style of fishing. No offense. If you want to bass/whatever fish on stilllwater, get a bass boat or kayak.

    put the pwm into a larger box with some offset ventilation, heat is your biggest enemy.
    a fan won’t use much power but you could just add heatsinks if you want.

    I run my M-K off a Rebel LiFe battery with a bluetooth connection to my phone with an app that allows me to monitor battery activity (life, discharge rate, etc...). Setting 1 and setting 5 DO NOT draw the same amperage- not even close. I don't know how the switch works- but if it wasted the extra 300watts between (setting 1 vs 5) the head unit on the trolling motor would feel like a small space heater. Otherwise, thanks for the video as I'm looking to integrate a PWM.

    • @willritter

      I love the idea of a bluetooth. The battery indicator on my box stopped working so now I'm going to have to figure something else out. You'll love the PWM. It's awesome for trolling.

    Thanks for the video, I have a Minn Kota C2 40 and at F1 it draws 6.6A, F2 it draws 8.3A. It's definitely inefficient, but it's not drawing the full amperate (@1A/lbs).
    Perhaps you can do a clamp current measurement when it's at F1 F2 and F3 then you might see something similar as I've seen.

      Thanks for the info! I've suspected that perhaps the info I repeated here was not as extreme as I initially heard. If I was responsible I wouldn't have actually measured the current before opening my mouth! haha. Either way, the PWM is the way to go.

I have another question for you.....using the 14 gauge from the trolling motor to the PWM I can wire it directly. You're good as long as you don't go smaller than the stock 14g that came with your motor. That wire is sized to handle the current needs of your motor A 10g wire can hold a lot more amps than a 14g.

    Thanks for these videos. RE the hookup of trolling motor wire to PWM, the PWM connections are so small and so close together I haven't figured out how to connect the multi-wire leads (are they 6 or 8 ga., not sure?) from the Endura 40. I am ordering another PWM which appears to have larger connections with more space between them. 10 gage is probably smallest wire I'd use. Connecting 10 to those beefy lines will still be a problem. Comments?

    • @willritter
      @willritter  3 роки тому +1

      Well, the stock wires for my 30 worked for in the specific pwm I have. I checked the wire size for your application and I think your right about keeping the 10 gauge. I would just make sure to solder the connections as they run a higher risk of slipping off with those sizes

    The belief that trolling motors use the same amount of power on lower speeds is an old wive's tale and 99% false.
    The remaining 1% of truth in that belief is the fact that some power is, in fact, wasted as heat but no where near all the power that would have otherwise been delivered to the motor. When you add more restriction to the flow of electrical current, you naturally will flow less electrical current which is LESS POWER being drawn from the battery.

    • @linaslinas3170
      @linaslinas3170 6 місяців тому

      That happens because they never measured power draw... And believing in everything that everyone talks about is a mark of foolishness. I'm not sure that every brushed motor uses a resistor to reduce voltage to the motor. At some point even Minn kota started advertising their brushed models as more power efficient. How did they manage to do that? Maybe they switched from resistors to mosfets or other buck type converter? I'm not sure, I never disassembled mine. Also people do not understand fluid dynamics and think that choosing a 10% duty cycle causes 10% speed.... Which is not true. At some points there will be zero speed below lets say 25% of motor power because of propeller properties. That is why these motors have only 3 speeds in reverse. The propeller is less effective running in the opposite direction. So level 3 may be the same max power value. I see only one point to run these pwm controllers if someone decides to use 2 motors in parallel... Or if you need remote control, or diy gps anchor setup. As an electronics engineer i consider this setup as too junky for small inflatable boats for no real purpose better add 50$ to lifepo4 battery. Also why are these controllers so huge? Look at rc hobbyist ones, i bet you will find much much smaller ones. If you want to be effective, choose brushless motors instead. Haswing has not expensive models with brushless motors. But then again brushless will emit much emc noise and may cause interference with gps, if both devices use the same power supply.
