- Rigging a Colorado fishing pontoon boat to run the rapids of Desolations/Gray Canyon during low water.
Some modifications for running whitewater include:
A Spare Oar
Repair kit with extra oarlocks and oar stops
Oar rights
Throw Bag
Strapped down Ammo Cans
A wood front deck
A dragline.
Looks like a good time to be had by all that journeyed with you. You might want to look up how to row in whitewater. As with a drift boat you should point your bow towards what you want to avoid hitting and back row upstream away from it allowing you to steer the boat and not be at the mercy of the current. Pushing your boat forward in the midst of rocks will in the end cause you to hit them. May all your days on the water be filled with joy filled peace and great adventure...!
Yes! You nailed it Bruce. Steer with the stern, not the bow.
I think that boat stayed upright because it had such a cool dude rowing it!!
I wish I could keep up with the big boats on the flat water though.
Looks like you had an awesome time. I absolutely love my 9’ Colorado pontoon boat. I’ve always been careful with it and never taken it anywhere I shouldn’t or think I can handle myself, but every time I’ve come up on rapid waters it’s handled everything just fine. Love it
Very cool. I have a Colorado XT and have taken it down some class 2+ rapids before. Lots of fun. The only tricky part is not getting turned sideways. That's what will flip you. I would love to do this river that you video'd. Thanks for making an awesome clip.
Thanks LJ, I think the Colorado XT is fine up to about class 2+. I did catch a couple rocks sideways but was fortunate enough to rotate quickly and avoid flipping. I think I'm going to upgrade to a RMR PhatCat for running true class 3 and 4 water.
We did it 30yrs ago and all we took for our map was John Wesley Powell's Journal.. I bought an XR1 and just happened by to watch.. Thanks for the trip.. JP in Bearcreek MT
These poontoon boats are amazing I had the Colorado Roanoke it's just a plain Jane basic poontoon but was a great boat now I have the xts with trolling motor and casting deck love it
Awesome!! Just bought the Colorado XTS 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Sub’d 🤙🏼
Very enjoyable video to watch great narration and of course great scenery. You are definitely a pro at it. Thanks again.
These boots float like a cork. They are very responsive. I did class 2 without any problem. Only problem was on of the oars got bent. If I did heavier water I would like better oars. But now it is just rowing around Utah lake.
Nice video.
Cheers.
Rafters have a safety strap to keep an escaped oar near, important. And a third oar is always needed,,, some travel with two spares. I canoe. Done Deso/Gray 5 times now. Do not be afraid of swimming a rapid. Happens all the time. No big deal. on a hot August day,, downright refreshing. The 'trick' is EVERYTHING secured, tied down. Everything is still attached when you flip the boat back up. A little wet,, a bit chagrined, some well deserved laughter and an excuse to break out that bottle you have been saving. You ran it at 2,000 cfs,, I have run it at 20,000 plus and 2,000 minus,, always fun best in the middle. Catch a permit when the water is running at 8,000 to 15,000 you, will love it,, having done it at low water. See you out there.
Awesome video! Because your experience, I'm encouraged to buy a Classic Accessories Colorado Pontoon Boat for myself. I probably won't challenge the rapids just yet, but this pontoon should satisfy my need for lake fishing this summer. Thank you for all of your details.
Love the footage! I knew these boats are more seaworthy than the label gives them credit for. Your rowing made me nervous at times though! Liked! 👍
nice share!
Great adventure!😊
Great ride man! ❤️✌️👍
Beautiful video... Also , LOVE the music
I just bought one of these… Can’t wait to float a river up here in Alberta

Got mine Yesterday
That's awesome!
Hi..have u ever tipped over after 1 pontoon hits and goes over a rock?
Luckily, I haven't flipped the Pontoon boat. I have flipped in a raft.
I loved your video.
Very Well Done.
Was your frame the one that came with the Colorado pontoon?
I'm bout to pick one of these up for muskie fishing out here.in new Mexico
I have this same pontoon and use it to float the rivers in south Idaho
Well least i know i can put mine through a little bit rougher water now
Absolutely not any class three rapids here! Class 1 and lower Class 2 water but definitely not any class 3 stuff
I'm guessing it doesn't go well. let's see...
You tried class 3 rapids and didn't have oar safety tether?... I have those for flat water in case I drop one and am caught by a gust of wind that pushes me away from it...
Cool
Please never throw a rope from a boat! Doesn’t work and is veeeeeery dangerous
Yes, I was reprimanded by the TL, and learned my lesson.
I just bought the xts. They are awesome.
What kind of oar rights are those?
Those are small Tom Grant oar rights from NRS.
Did the gram em come with yours?, I have one of these but the frame is a smaller diameter black painted steel tubing
,yours looks to be an aluminum frame
Actually it is just spray paint. I like the hammered silver look more than the black.
Ah thanks, it definitely looks better!
not too bad
Oars are to short, need 8 ft.
I've got one of these boats and I've been thinking about modifying it for 2 people, 1 rower mid/back and 1 angler up front. What do you think? I know it would be cramped and on the edge of the weight capacity, but do you think I could pull it off?
worth a shot
The Colorado falls ,that's nothing. Have you ever been to the Niagara falls?
😂😂😂😂😂🤦♂️
