I love all things pickled and fermented! I am of Nordic descent, so family feasts always included simple fridge-pickled vegetables like this. Other favorites were quick-pickled cucumbers with onion (sometimes sour cream was stirred in before being placed on the table), or pickled beets. The vinegar and fermentation is a sharp counterpoint that balances the fat/protein/carb portion of the groaning board, and helps with digestion.
Jews make pickled Herring (I think 3 different ways) my favorite is with Onions and a sour cream sauce that is delicious and the only way I will eat Herring. I don't make it but buy it at a Jewish deli or in a jar from the refrigerated section at a supermarket.
Hi ya'll! My Mom made this and since she is gone I still do. The only difference in yours is she used 2 tsps. Of celery seed in hers. Everyone in our family and our extended family loves it. Oh, and we call it Refrigerator Slaw.
I think if you added mayonnaise to it, it becomes a cole slaw. Grew up on a farm, standard food along with pickled beets. Love your show, can’t wait till I can get cookbook.

I grew up eating something similar to this, instead of the peppers/onion we used banana peppers and green tomatoes chopped with the cabbage. My Mother's family were from Floyd county KY. We always drain the brine and fry in a little bacon grease. Must have with beans and cornbread in my family. I make several jars and keep in the back of the fridge.

I ordered canning jars to make this, but they won’t be delivered until next week, so I punted by using my largest Pyrex bowl which, I believe, holds four quarts. I doubled the amount of the brine. I considered adding a jalapeno, but decided to just start with your basic recipe. It is absolutely perfect. You nailed the proportions of all the ingredients. This is a keeper. I can’t tell you how happy I am with the results. Thank you for sharing. Next up is your meatloaf, but again, I’m waiting for the jar of relish.

Awesome delicious looking recipe indeed. My husband's grandmother would make Freezer Slaw. Instead of refrigerating she would place in freezer. The brine would keep the cabbage just barely frozen, and the brine was a sweet sweet vinegar brine. I will definitely be trying your pickled cabbage recipe. Thank you for the video and recipe! I am looking forward to making this as I LOVE almost every cabbage recipe out there. My favorite is fried cabbage and bacon, which I learned when I was in the Navy and going to A-school out in Millington, TN. A first-class Commissaryman taught me and another sailor how to make it, using one of those big flat-top griddles. It was the best and finest meal I'd ever had using cabbage and bacon. Thank you again! Have a wonderful and safe week! 😊💖🙏🏻
Lisa, I bet you made a lot of the fried cabbage and bacon while you were in the Navy. Melissa and I want you to know that we appreciate your service to our country. THANK YOU! 🇺🇸
@@tomwyant9297 Thank you for the kind sentiments. I loved being in the Navy ( working on P-3s). I never got a chance again to make it like that. I was assigned to that facility for a few days waiting for my avionics class to start up. It was the first of two years in training, with classes all day long, so I never had the chance again to make it like that. However, I learned so much that day on how to make great bacon and cabbage. Thank you again! 😊

Carol, I’m so excited that you’re going to try this recipe even though you’re not a vinegar fan. We think it’s absolutely delicious! We hope you think so too. Thanks for your encouragement and support.
Our old family recipe uses apple cider vinegar, not white vinegar. Try that instead if you're not a white vinegar fan. It's less harsh & buy the apple cider vinegar that you have to shake the jar to mix it before you pour it out. It's the organic version & more healthier for you.
I have a recipie for "3 week slaw", which is very similar to your cabbage dish. I got the reciepe from a caterer I worked for. It is so good, and it lasts so long in the fridge. Yum.

There is an Asian restaurant in my neighborhood that gives a side of free pickled cabbage before every meal. There's is cabbage, carrot and the pickled vinegar. I can't wait to see how you're making your's because I will definite make it too 😊
Donna, I hope you enjoy our version as much as what you get at the restaurant. Let us know. Thanks for watching!
I have never heard of this. OMG does it look amazing. All I need is the cabbage. Project for this weekend. Thanks!
Oh my, did that sound wonderful. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Bea & Maddy, we absolutely love this pickled cabbage side dish. It goes with just about anything. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment!
YES! thank you for posting this & the recipe 🎉
I’m going to make this I’m getting hungry 😋 thanks for sharing all your recipes and the ones you get from your friends 😊have a blessed night Tom and Melissa 🙏
You’re welcome, Dana. We hope you give this recipe a try and enjoy it as much as we do. Thank you for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment.
Thank you all so so much for this recipe! My mouth is watering & the cake behind you got me too😛. I can’t wait to share this with my girls night group! Your recipes are making me the most popular in our group 😁. God bless💖💕
pafie3425, thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. The cake you saw on the counter is the cake that is pictured on the front cover of our new cookbook. It is also Melissa‘s favorite birthday cake, which I make for her birthday every November. A video about that cake will be coming up in just a few weeks. Keep watching!
I was excited when I heard “ginger”, but must hv been your accent! I was by University Hospital in October 1996 and had the cabbage mix w ginger everyday. Been looking for it ever since. Will try this asap
Well Mr Douglas, I suppose we be trying this recipe. Although I have not been to Juniors, I'm sure your recipe is going to be the experience. Hugs to Lisa! 😂 I thought you might be referring to Oliver when you talked about the core 🤔 😅❤😂 Great video
I like it with fried green tomatoes or other fried foods. Thanks for another great episode! ❤
Vicky, speaking of fried foods, this goes perfectly with a fish fry. The only other things you need are some french fries and hush puppies. Thanks for watching our videos!
I love cabbage every way and looking forward to trying your recipe!
We are so glad you are going to try this recipe! Enjoy!
I am diabetic and this is a perfect treat indeed. I think roast beef would be great with this as a side. Enjoying being a subscriber. Love from Ky Sub on the bourbon trail. Thank you for adding the complete recipe in description area.
tamsondarland, we hope you love this recipe! I think it’s fairly close to Freezer Slaw. Thanks for watching!
Too funny ,hope you enjoyed your visit here. Junior's has the best cheesecAke .👍🏻👍🏻 I ❤️ come sit at our table. Love it your comment Oliver & Lisa Douglas lol
Love your recipes but I also love to watch you eat! You're a good eater!😊 Your friend in Glasgow
I can hardly wait to try this recipe, Thank You for sharing!
Cannot wait to try. Looks delicious, thanks much.
Looks delicious! I also love the core. My momma used to put the core in the crock when she made sauerkraut. So good!
That's a good use for it.
This Pickled Cabbage recipe looks so delicious 😋 Mr. Tom.
Sammy, we think it’s absolutely wonderful. We love that it goes with just about any meat that you can serve. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment.
@@tomwyant9297 It's my absolute pleasure to provide you with this kind of support for your channel.
I love pickled veggies. I will be making this for sure. I like pickled cauliflower.
Yum, I am going to make some of this. Need to be eating more cabbage. Thanks for sharing this.
We hope you like it as much as we did, Darlene. I will certainly be making this quite often. Thanks for supporting our channel!
Looks absolutely delicious. I’ve eaten pickled cabbage at a deli called Pumpernick’s in North Wales Pa. They have a pickle cabbage bar to go with your meals. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I can’t wait to try. Have a wonderful weekend. 😊
👏👏👏👏
Great job!!!!
It is really good for you..
Lorrie, thank you for the encouragement and support. We appreciate you!

You are so welcome, Sandy. We hope you enjoy this pickled cabbage every bit as much as we did. Thank you so much for being a subscriber and supporting our channel.
You were in my hometown? Would have been great to see you having a meet-n-greet for all us fans of both of you! Thanks for another great recipe!
pm914407, a meet-up would have been fun! Actually, while we were eating in Junior’s, a subscriber recognized us and came to our table. That was exciting for us! We were so happy to meet her. Maybe the next time we’re in NYC we can organize a meet-and-greet. Thanks for watching our videos and supporting our channel.
No matter where you go, I’m sure you could have a fan base!
I love Green Acres, I watched it all the time growing up. I still like to catch an episode on one of the channels with the old shows. I will make this recipe for my family for Sunday dinner with pork chops, fried tators, and Johnny cakes!
This is how Mama made cabbage slaw. I still prefer this to the creamy sauce when mayo is mixed in.
Me too. I'll never get tired of Green Acres It's the place to be!
Great recipe, nice tutoring! Thank you.
There's a small hamburger restaurant near where we live called South 21. They make a pickled cabbage slaw. I crave it and go there for a good ole hotdog and a cup of slaw. This recipe looks awesome. I can't wait to make my own. Love your channel!
Thanks I like making meals i can eat and keep. Cooking for 1 person it helps. God Bless you both! This also sounds healthy exceot the sugar!!!
Yummy! I've been to New York and ate it Juniors. I can't wait to try this recipe 😊
Christine, don’t you just love juniors? I have never had a bad meal there and I always leave stuffed. Thanks for watching our video and for leaving us a comment.
Thank you Tom and Melissa I'm not a big vinegar fan but I believe I've had a version of this coleslaw before and it was so good so I can't wait to try your pickled cabbage recipe
@@joanoblinger7898 I can take the apple cidar a little better
I have a recipie for "3 week slaw", which is very similar to your cabbage dish. I got the reciepe from a caterer I worked for. It is so good, and it lasts so long in the fridge. Yum.
Bonnie, caterers always have good dishes, right? Thanks for watching!
I will be making that pickled cabbage. I like veggies like that.
Awesome, Betty! I’m glad you’re going to try it. Let us know what you think. Thanks for watching.
Never have been to New York but it looks like fun. Will try this recipe for sure. 😊 love your tee-shirt too 👍😄
Sandra, I believe everyone should visit NYC at least once in their life. Seeing a Broadway show is always a highlight of a trip to New York for us. We sure do appreciate you watching our videos and supporting our channel.
i will try it. so much fun watching your excitement ..
This looks delish and I can't wait to try it. Love your videos and have tried several of your recipes. The core was and still is my favorite thing to eat. Keep up your awesome videos!!!!
Thank you so much for the nice words. We love having you at our table.
❤❤ I've always wanted a easy recipe on cabbage, thank you so much, Happy Holidays and blessings.
I have been looking for this type of recipe for years, so I shall be making it as soon as I get the ingredients & containers to store it in. Everything I have bought never has the vinegar in it & that is what I wanted. I don't like the blandness of just water. So thank you for this from down under, you have made my day!!
Thanks so much for this recipe! I know my husband will LOVE this!!!
❤-Brenda
Hello Tom and Melissa, I live in Brooklyn NY and at least once a month we have lunch at Juniors, I love their pickles beets also, I know they are famous for their cheese cakes but I love their hamburgers 😋 hope you had fun while you were here, god bless you and your family 🙏🏾💕
I love leaving New York and coming home to Kentucky. But the restaurants are fabulous🤣🤣🤣
Joni, NYC isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it sure is an exciting city to visit. And you’re right! There’s nothing like coming home. Thanks for supporting our channel!
Woah, woah, woah! At about 9:35 a layer cake appeared that begged me to come sit at your table! Omg!!!
Cindy, you have a keen eye! That is the cake that is pictured on the front cover of our new cookbook. It is also Melissa‘s favorite birthday cake and the cake I make for her every year in November for her birthday. We will have a video coming up in November about that cake. Keep watching!
I noticed a beautiful cake in the video! Did you make it?
Just made this. Not sure how it will taste, but beautiful in the jar! If it is a good at Tom says, will give as Christmas gifts. Thanks Tom and Melissa! So, few things we watch, glad you all are there. God Bless!
