I did this last week for the first time and it went so so. I don’t think I’ve done a sharp enough angle even though I thought I’d put it at 17 degrees. Maybe I’m getting the line up mark wrong. It’s not very clear where you line up the 17 with. I’m going to repeat today at a lower angle I had a disaster with the leather strop too. I think I’ve not got the compound on finely enough. Bits of it were bumping the knife and leaving black gunge on blade. It also made the blade worse than before. It’s all about learning as you go along. Looking forward to having another crack at it today 👍🏴

The edge trailing angle guides dont work well for precise sharpening because the belt will ALWAYS try to pull the knife off the guide as it spins. People want edge trailing becuase it safer but it leaves a large feather burr that over all is weaker at the apex.

Hello, i am amazed how quickly you always get a burr on the P120. Is it possible that Edge Trailing works slower? Or do the Cubitron make the difference? I am currently using the "Work Sharp" and working with the running direction (Edge Trailing). Sorry for my bad English. I use google tr anslator.
It was a bad "angle" for the camera thats for sure...one of the first videos I tried to do. Should always try to do the flat of the blade, some blades make that difficult.
The "quick release" is just the normal operation of the tension/tracking swing arm when its been adjusted properly. The pivot bolt at bottom of swing arm is over tight from factory...
Your hand and arm get in the way but looks like you are not resting the knife on the guide, or just the very tip of it. Looks like the knife is not parallel to the guide when you sharpen. Is that just an illusion or are on resting the blade on the guide?
"and methods have greatly surpassed this now." What method(s) are they? Because this video looks top notch! If, however, there is something better, I would like to know, please. Thank you!
Same as Amazons jig, they dropped their price a bit below ours but we still have best belts n prices. Quality belts make a HUGE difference. www.currycustomcutlery.com
There are indeed many ways to get many different types of edges. Slicing phone book paper is one test but free standing is another, splitting hair is another test and so on.
Sparking depends on a couple things mostly the carbon content or metallurgical makeup of what you're grinding. Also the type of belt that you are using could have a factor
Motor is a single phase AC non reversible. Ive sharpening several 1000s of knives without incident(while using the angle guide). I would not freehand sharpen into the belt. The angle guide breaks any momentum a belt would have if it was to catch the blade and try to throw it. You can always flip the machine onto its back and sharpen away from you like I show in other videos too.
Leather belt is another "surgi-sharp" item available on Amazon. Because its a natural product it may be wonky tho. My first belt seasoned up nicely, 2nd belt was loose, 3rd belt was wobbly etc. YMMV Another option is synthetic felt belts, they run smooth but you may miss out on the burnishing effects leather offers.
justin urra I did a short video on the angle guide as well. It's about 1" across and 1.5" deep. make short work of any curved blade by pivoting and rotate while holding flat down on guide.
I have one but I think it runs too fast and generates too much heat, even with 1000 grit. I'll stick with my Lansky for honing but I love the sander for power stripping with a 1x30 leather belt.
You sharpen via edge against the belt j stead of trail sharpening g? Why do the angle guides work in such a way that blade edge goes against the direction. Of the belt instead of with it? Think I'm gonna mod if y my angle guide to go with the belt direction, not aagainst it
The simple answer is it works very well this way and you get a stronger apex formation. Edge trailing leaves a flimsy feather burr and it's very hard to get a strong toothy edge that way. It's leading is only safe with an angle guide such as this method
@@CurryCustomCutlery Thank you for the quick replay- I'm nervous as all get out about trying it with the leading method. I'm getting the angle guide either today or tomorrow- should be here soon- I just can't free hand a consistent angle- I was gonna try modifying the angle guide by straightening the top that catches n the top of the steel brace (plinkin sp?)- then turn it upside down, and drill two holes on other side for the angle guide itself- but I'll give it as try without doing so
@@Nazareth434 I understand you're nervousness. After 50,000 lives I can say the method is safe because the belt and the blade will get separated instantly if you cut into the belt which you should learn not to do by following a couple simple rules. Be careful of the edge of the belt do not try to sharpen a recurve or serrated blade edge leading. Maybe I can do a quick video today demonstrating why it is safe
I honestly dont know....the stock version motor is annoying pitched whine and goes very fast but as a frame/base to build a machine from they are excellent
100k knives so I can tell you what I know. WITH an angle guide it is safe. The fixed guide will stop the belt from being thrown. New video on EDGE LEADING coming soon!
wolf1 that's a really good question. It's been so long ago I don't remember and I should have mentioned it but I was new at making videos then. Honestly it doesn't matter anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees would be a safe bet for a good Edge depending on the application.
Appreciate the suggestion. This was one of the very first videos I ever did and clearly I had a long way to go in my recording skills as well as my sharpening. LOL
It's nice to have options. If you're using the belt without a platten I highly recommend you go edge trailing for safety. Unfortunately that method leaves a huge feather Burr. It can of course be removed but I have suspicions that it weakens the edge perhaps a little bit
@@CurryCustomCutlery That's how J. Neilson sharpens his knives. ;-) Yes the edge is always pointed down on the belt. I follow up with a leather strop 1 x 30 belt.
Curry Custom Cutlery Thanks. They were out of stock on Amazon but I found one on eBay for the same price with free shipping for anyone else that might be interested. I watched your video as well. Gonna definitely break out the Dremel and cut the groove to compensate for thumb stud folders. Have you ever had a problem with picking up a chattering sound from the platen while sharpening? It got so bad I was just sharpening on the slack but results were less than stellar. I picked up the silica carbide belts and I like you find that they just wear out really fast. I might have to track down some of the Trivex belts in the 200-1000 grit range. Thanks for the great videos for us small grinder guys.

Motor is a single phase AC non reversible. Ive sharpening several 1000s of knives without incident(while using the angle guide). I would not freehand sharpen into the belt. The angle guide breaks any momentum a belt would have if it was to catch the blade and try to throw it. You can always flip the machine onto its back and sharpen away from you like I show in other videos too.
did you make the leather belt or do they sell them just for that sander I'm trying to get into knife sharing
Leather belt is another "surgi-sharp" item available on Amazon. Because its a natural product it may be wonky tho. My first belt seasoned up nicely, 2nd belt was loose, 3rd belt was wobbly etc. YMMV
Another option is synthetic felt belts, they run smooth but you may miss out on the burnishing effects leather offers.
Curry Custom Cutlery thank you
I used the hf sander to 1000 grit and it's no where near hair popping sharp..I guess you need the strop belt which I don't have
Stropping step is critical
how long is the piece the blade rests on? I have a head knife I want to sharpen
justin urra I did a short video on the angle guide as well. It's about 1" across and 1.5" deep. make short work of any curved blade by pivoting and rotate while holding flat down on guide.
I used to do this in shop class, made a few ninja throwing shurikens too.
Where did you get the strop for the sander?
We offer a complete quality line of sharpening products at best prices around including leather and felt strops:

how did you make the angled piece that fits on the plenum???
Its a purchased product, usually runs around $30. Called the Surgi Sharp angle guide. He did a short video on it as well.
how did u make the jig?
Jig is for sale on our website:

where did you get the leather belt ?
Old old video sorry. Leather belt can by found at lots of places on line. I have a couple belt review videos that go into details. Cheers
What was the last belt?
old old video...I explain better in "Dull to shaving in 1 minute"
I have one but I think it runs too fast and generates too much heat, even with 1000 grit. I'll stick with my Lansky for honing but I love the sander for power stripping with a 1x30 leather belt.
Higher grits increase the friction, lighter pressure and quicker passes helps.
Thanks for the video. Friggin great looking knife.
Thx Gary
My question is why doesn't HF just sell a knife sharpening complete belt set up?
They only offer up to 120 grit belts. They are useless.
you didn't want to show us how you made your angle jig?
I didnt make it. Its a purchased product you can by. We even sell it on our website. ;)

@@CurryCustomCutlery Thanks, if you do- please ping me by replying to this- would like to see the video-
How do you make the guide
Guide is available on our website CurrycustomCutlery.com
great video, can´t wait to buy one of those little sanders, just don´t understand why some people are so hard on them, they seem to do the job nicely.
I honestly dont know....the stock version motor is annoying pitched whine and goes very fast but as a frame/base to build a machine from they are excellent
I always thought that you NEVER sharpen INTO the blade...always AWAY from the edge!!
Definitely
100k knives so I can tell you what I know.
WITH an angle guide it is safe.
The fixed guide will stop the belt from being thrown. New video on EDGE LEADING coming soon!
I don't think it matters either way
Always against the blade! No burrs.....
Just like a stone. Always against the blade.
what angle are you using on guide??
wolf1 that's a really good question. It's been so long ago I don't remember and I should have mentioned it but I was new at making videos then. Honestly it doesn't matter anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees would be a safe bet for a good Edge depending on the application.
Friend thanks for the video.
I wondered if that was a surgi sharp. Been looking at them awhile and not pulled the trigger on one. Now that I've seen it in action I think I will.

Seems a bit fast. Probably overheating the edge of the blade and softening the steel.
Takes more then you think to do that. Heat treating to slightly reduce Hardness is at over 400° for an hour or more. A micro second wont do that. ;)
Where can you get the leather 1x30 strop like that? Thanks for the video
Brandon Bailey www.woodworkingshop.com/product/wp30000/
Awesome! Need that 1x30
Highly suggest a variable or slower speed model. The Rikon 50-161 for example
How did u make ur jig
I have a video on it. Surgi-sharp angle guide.
Can't really see the blade in the last step. Maybe try to place your camera over the work? But good video mate. Thank you.
Appreciate the suggestion. This was one of the very first videos I ever did and clearly I had a long way to go in my recording skills as well as my sharpening. LOL
I dont use a stop I like the belt to flex so that it produces a convex edge.
Neilson sharpens his knives. ;-)
Yes the edge is always pointed down on the belt. I follow up with a leather strop 1 x 30 belt.
How did you make your angle jig?
Its a purchased product, usually runs around $30. Called the Surgi Sharp angle guide. I did a short video on it as well.
