This scene is a perfect summation of how this movie blends idealized animated characters with archetypes and character traits that feel real and grounded. Most child protagonists in movies are annoying but in this scene as a child you can relate to Hogarth and as an adult you find his spiel oddly charming. Also in most films Dean would be a twist villain or an unrealistically evil adult, but in this he’s just a relaxed everyman who serves as one of the few people Hogarth can trust.

Fun Fact: Director Brad Bird did all of Hogarth's animation in this scene. He has always been known for being hands on rather than a director who leads form afar. He is a well seasoned animator with plenty of years of experience and I'm glad he did this scene. The personality and expressions is heavily inspired by the voice actor and he really puts that in the spotlight. Brad Bird also did The Incredible and Ratatouille if you thought his name sounded familiar. This was his first time directing a feature length film and he blew it out of the water.

This scene does a perfect job of analyzing something I've never really understood with bullying in movies. Why do the bullies target the smart kids? Hogarth says it himself, all the other kids see him as, "A shrimpy dork who thinks he's smarter than everyone." But Hogarth doesn’t think he’s smarter than everyone else. He just does the homework that gets assigned to them. Every time I see that happen in other movies and TV, I think, "What's so bad about being smart?" Intelligence is a great thing, not something you should feel bad about.

    • @brigidtheirish

Because bullies are cowards and the "shrimpy dork" is an easy target. They also probably feel insecure about their own grades, so take it out on someone who they perceive as trying to lord over them simply by "doing the stupid homework."

***** Trust me. As much as high school sucks shit, it's really all about teaching you how to build a work ethic. You aren't going to remember half of your biology, history, math, or what have you, unless a specific subject actually pertains to your interest. Can you do all this busy work? Good. You'll be able to work under pressure in the adult world.
College, in my experience, is about figuring out where you want to go with your life, and the first two years are more or less open for you to screw around with while you figure out where you want to put your career.
Again, just do the stupid homework so you can move up a grade and get pounded. I fucked about in high school, and I don't particularly regret it, but you'll have much more opportunity (read better college choices) if you keep the grades up.Admittedly, again, it's not about 'ALL A'S, BLAUGH', so much as doing YOUR personal best. If you average out Cs across the board in a math class, you can still get out with a B in the end, maybe even a low A.
Again, it's all about DOING the work to YOUR best ability.
Keep it up, you can get through this :)

He has the most personality I've ever seen in an animated kid. Most movies is just "I'm a relatable kid because I'm awkward and play games" But this little dude actually has a personality that isn't just the one dimensional "underdog". I love it
Edit: Ok I wasn't gonna do a cringey edit for thousands of likes, but 14k is the most I've ever had. Wanted to clarify that I'm not saying there are no modern exceptions 😑 Bruh, I'm just saying the way kids were written back then was more like a real kid. A modern example of this is the girl from Mitchell's vs the machines. She was like a real teen. :)

You know in storytelling they often say "show don't tell." However, telling can work sometimes. In this case, since the story is focused mainly on Hogarth's relationship with the Iron Giant, the movie doesn't exactly need to show that Hogarth has kind of a difficult time in school.

I love it when writers mix humor with some character reveal! Not only do we get a good laugh from those who don't get it, we also understand why he doesn't have other friends. Not to mention what he expresses is a social issue that still might be around. Getting bullied for doing good grades is an issue that we need to resolve. It discourages kids from doing good in school, which can affect them in bad ways, IE, it teaches them that doing good in school gets you hurt for no reason, and that the parents can't do anything about it.

I like that the situation is a bit cleverer than the fact that he's
smarter than everyone else. He was moved up a grade, which means that
he's a year younger than his classmates, which makes a big difference when you're a squirt.
So not only is he smarter than them, he's the smallest kid in class and a bulls eye for bullies.
Its tough teaching gifted kids because you have to balance their academic situation with their social one. You can have them bored to death by the schoolwork or have them beat up by being forced into social situations they are not big enough to handle yet.
