  • this one almost broke me...
Welcome back to Unguided, where I'm trying to complete every quest in old school runescape without using a guide, wiki or plugins. I'll only be using my limited knowledge and in-game learnings. Full rules below.
    RULES
    - No use of OSRS wiki (or any equivalent) for anything - this includes looking up item spawns, quest guides, boss guides, anything
    - No use of any other quest helper sites
    - No use of quest helper plugin
    CAVEATS
    - I love OSRS UA-cam, I might inadvertently learn something I don't know by watching my favourite content creators, but I'm not going to stop watching them so that's just a risk I'm willing to take + it's unlikely going to be relevant for me
    - I may use some QoL plugins, but only a few. Loot tracker to prove grinds, ground items so I don't miss drops and left click to use bones. Nothing that will give me info I didn't previously have
    - I'm going to try and avoid any spoiler comments. If you can, please try not to help me if there's an episode where I'm stuck on something. I appreciate the sentiment but telling me an item spawn or quest step could spoil the fun :)

I think old RS quests really relied on the context of new quests/areas, and that that area used to be blocked off by a broken bridge pre-Trials. So the councilman fixed it, and they assumed you'd talk to him.

    • @AlienFoodage
      @AlienFoodage  8 місяців тому +81

No way! I genuinely never knew that Relleka was like an expansion area. I noticed the councilman saying they fixed the bridge but thought that was just some lore… didn’t realise there was a time it was actually broken. So interesting, thanks for the comment!

In many cases, not even graduates. Jagex had an Intern Program for a long time in the early 2000's. They'd hire people still in school and would actually let them design quests. Desert Treasure 1 was made by one of these interns whose internship ended in the middle of making the quest, that's why it feels so disjointed and cobbled together - it literally was by an actual Jmod who salvaged what work was done and slapped something together.

If you get stuck you really should just take a break in whatever way, personally I get better solutions when I'm not directly working on a problem I have. The subconsciousness is a powerful tool!

    • @AlienFoodage
      @AlienFoodage  8 місяців тому +26

100%, whenever I take time away I often come back and view something in a different way. There were quite a few break points in this episode but it’s not too clear when edited together… the swensen maze for example, I slept on that before getting lucky and talking to him again to get through it

    • @poro3246
      @poro3246 23 дні тому +1

It's because your brain is still subconciously working on it. Most notably, it tries to correlate past knowledge with the new knowledge gained. That's why when you're stuck in a rabbit hole, taking a break might get you out because you'll use your common sense again rather than hyperfocusing on some details.

the amount of satisfaction and accomplishment i get from watching you actually solving these quests is on par with watching limpwurt's extreme chunk series. I could never have the patience or self control to not look something up, when it's so so easy to just google it once. Also i feel like this is truly The most nostalgic series, having to run around like an idiot because you didn't take a fucking tinderbox with you, or getting stuck on quests and just never completing them. Truly the childhood experience.

Don't know if you'll come back to these comments, but just want to reassure you that i don't think there's anything wrong with asking players in game for advice if you're stuck on a quest as a last resort. In the old pre-wiki, pre-social-media days that's how players would get help if they were stuck, so i think it's still easily within the premise of this account.
Love this series, it's the most i've been invested in an account since Swampletics!

I do find it pretty funny that he says hes clicking on random NPCs and talking to them here and there moving around and thats how they found the Poison Seller but then not talk to the actual NPC they needed to talk to till the very end that they have to pass by every single time going from Camelot to Rellekka.
I know that pain so well from other games.

Your revelation about the navigator truly blew my mind. When I did this quest unguided myself I was only able to figure out that if I ended up in a room with a dark floor, I had probably wandered off-track, so I would restart and brute force my way through until I found a route of all light-floored rooms.
Also loved seeing that your descent into madness regarding the drinking contest and the drainpipe mirrored my own so similarly, right down to the clay logic and the desperation cheese.

Fun fact, Askeladden is actually a famous fairy tale character in Norwegian folklore. His name directly translated is Ashlad, as "Aske" is ash in Norwegian, and ladden is an old name for a runt.
Well done on figuring out the Fremennik Trials by yourself, my uncle helped me when I first did it waaay back in the day. I agree that the poison salesman and the council workman are so random, placed far outside the town itself when the rest of the trials are inside (apart from maybe Skulgrimen's).

I just started a UIM where I can't unlock a chunk until an NPC tells me about something in it (because the concept of normal chunk accounts are way too much playtime for me), and I feel like a tenet of that account that is shared with this one, is literally talk to every NPC you walk by, and fully exhaust all their options. 🤣🤣 Keep up the amazing work man!

Oh and as far as getting stuck on stuff goes, maybe allow yourself like 20 seconds of time on the wiki or one question (and their answer) from a stranger in exchange for grinding out 10 levels or something. Still a steep price for something that potentially won't help anyway. Itd be a good way to keep yourself from wanting to resort to the wiki every time your stuck, especially the further you progress. Whatever you decide to do I'm here for it!

18:18 it's time. It's always time. I don't have to check if I guessed right or try to decipher the first part of the riddle, like 50% of all those riddles ever are answered with "time" (or "day" or some other time-related crap) and crushing mountains and ending civilisations just makes it more obvious.
edit: ok, I watched further, you got it the same way on the second look xD
btw I haven't been commenting yet because the videos are old (maybe on the first episode?), but I've been binging this series, it's awesome and you're awesome.
Also, solving Swensen's riddle at about similar moment as you was satisfying, it was probably much more satisfying for you! I also don't know if I would get it so fast if you didn't focus on him being a navigator. Good stuff, you also got most previous quest puzzles faster than I probably would've, even when you showed all the hints.

Here's my non-spoiler things to know list thing i'm doing again
I liked your Stream. Even if we couldn't interact with you, it was still nice live watching you try to complete a quest. Half the reason people are here is because of the struggle. And the live stream is a LIVE event watching you struggle. So keep them going, even if there is no chat to interact with.
As far as I know, the double crate being separate objects to search? not a thing. It's just one searchable object.
A reminder yet again from me and the merchant task! :P
The game really requires you to talk to EVERYONE in the area. I know you said you THOUGHT you talked with the sailor...but yeah, Be systematic about it. It happens alot. Like with the bridge builder!
I REALLY had no idea how you would get the poison salesman and bridge builder. That as far as I know is about the most "out of area" random persons you need to talk to in a quest. The bridge worker references the poison salesman at least...but does the builder even count as in the area? Really? Maybe there are others, but I think he is the most out of the way crucial guy in a quest. The only redeeming thing is at least you need to use the bank a lot and there is only the one in Seers village. so the quest forces you to run past him...but still.
Also. I DID mention the drinking contest was out there. It wasn't straight forward at all.
I did find it amusing that you were thinking aloud how to distract him with the drainpipe and you mentioned explosives so quickly. Amazing how quickly people pick up on the idea of explosions for cheating a drinking game.
Since this is a British game. That's clearly a reference to the classic "joke" of cherry bombs in the waterpipes. And using it to cheat in a drinking contest no less!
So perhaps it would be easier to figure out if you were right proper bri'ish, now. yeah?
In the end though. WELL DONE in getting it done without even needing a small crutch. Ya did it!

    • @AlienFoodage

It's an area that you go to only accessible if you're on a specific slayer task so it was very interesting for me to be right next to the quest area for the underground pass. When you mentioned that One Small Favour and the Merchant Trial are similar, I pointed at the screen. It's a trope I'm quite familiar with and pleased you noticed, usually called a Chain of Deals. It mimics a reality of human life (the infamous Silk Road is not generally silk going straight from china to europe, but rather changing hands as a valuable and useful good many times going west). Chains of Deals are always a very strung out hassle as getting to the 'head' of the chain is an uphill climb, but they end on an extremely satisfying collapsing of all the relevant parts in one go when you do finally get that head.

I paused watching this series to do Fremmenik Trials myself, and I am now incredibly glad that I talked to the bridge constructor on my way to Rellekka because I was curious to why he was hanging around in the middle of nowhere.
Edit: another note; I can't help but feel like there maybe a pseudo-intended order to doing the tasks as the Merchant one requires you to talk with all of the Council Members (even the ones that don't have tasks) to complete it. The Merchant was the last one I did so it was quite easy for me to figure out who to talk to for the next step.

The puzzles remind me of the puzzle i make for dnd i always seem to make it too complicated. At least my party have me to guide them when they're running into a brick wall

I watched the first stream of this and rather enjoyed it. I agree with feldamar that even without chat, it was still fun to watch the process.
I have been enjoying this series very much. When getting my quest cape, i tried to do some quests without help myself and man, I do not have the patience haha.
I think maybe finding 1 or 2 people who really know the quests who, when you get very desperate, can give a nudge in the right direction. I think that would be amicable for the future, like with the drinking match distraction, a hint could be "Are you sure you talked to everyone?" and that could lead to you talking to the bridge guy. I don't know, just my thoughts on how to keep your sanity and keep the series going in the long run. :)

I had the bucket/jug riddle on my previous job interview and I had to resort to going through all possible moves to find the answer. It's easy when you know the answer, but hard when you don't.
edit: hahaha ok that's hilarious that it was a red herring. I love OSRS's quests, they can be annoying but definitely have their comedic moments.

I think its fine to ask for help or just move on - keep in mind some of these quests were made more than 12 years ago, and aren't necissarily straightforward in ways (the bridge guy for example), when i got the quest cape for the first time, i was frustrated by how you had to 'use' items on npcs rather than just talking to them with the item in your inventory. There are just a shit ton of things within quests and stuff that just throw you off and just spend hours doing nothing and they havent been updated EVER .i guess just preventing yourself from going absolutely bonkers, i think moving on or even just getting a hint could help

0:24 Fighter torso was a bigger hassle to get than fire cape, at least for me. I hate team projects :(
I have a strange relationship with OSRS in general, i strongly dislike questing and multiplayer activities(multiplayer quests are the worst, thankfully there are only a couple of those). But i like grinding for skills, solo bosses and some wildy chicanery every now and then.
