Nice little setup. Only recommendation I can see would to place a venturi between the barrels on the pump line. Give the fish a little extra oxygen at no cost.
That setup will definitely reduce the overhead cost for the talapia. How long to you think it will take to raise to 2lb size? Also, you say you want the change water to degas... You're on city water? Thanks for the Great videos!
Yup, really liking this setup. Thinking I might try something like this for my goldfish this winter but I haven`t decided yet. How many tilapia will you be able to raise in those barrels? Will you be heating it internally or just letting it take the temperature of the room over time? Thanks for sharing your project!
JT, I'm going to try and raise 20 two pound fish. This should make 40 quarter pound or better fillets. Since the 2 barrels together actually create a 100 gallon tank, I think this a reasonable goal. I'm trying to make this project as simple as possible so I'm going to try to heat with room temperature and see what happens. If need be, I'll just toss a 300 watt aquarium heater into the filter barrel. Thanks for your interest, Steve.
Cool. I want to get involved in raising edible fish soon. The goldfish are nice to look at but it's time to upgrade my aquaponics ... Looking forward to seeing how well this works out! JT
might be worth sticking a second pipe in between the barrels,or a big screen over the intake... if a dead fish blocks the one pipe with the valve it wll cause the fish filled barrel to over flow...
Can the 55 gallon barrel for the fish tank be replaced by a 250 gallon IBC tote? what of diverting some of the "filtered" water from the fish tank to a tower "garden" - aquaponic system......
I dont get it. What happened after this?? No week 3 / 4 etc. Disappointed to have no ending/result/final build pix or video. with fish in the barrel! you lost me . i don't get it.
Alex C It takes ammonia to get bacteria started which will convert ammonia to nitrites then nitrates. Adding ammonia in the beginning just simulates the ammonia that fish would have added had they been there. Hence the name "fish-less cycling"
fishandworms I see. Thanks. I'm working on a talapia drum setup myself, and I hadn't heard of this before. I used to have a pretty good reef system so I thought it would be like that.
adding a swirl filter to this would greatly reduce the amount of waste getting caught in the filters, allowing them to be used longer.

What happened to week 3? I was looking forward to this series, are you planning to continue it? Thanks
Got stalled for a couple weeks. Will resume soon. Steve.
Its been five years and we are still waiting

I'm betting on 10 months and yes, I have city water. Steve.

I'm glad I Subscribed. Can't wait to see more.

If the pump takes water just abve its head, and there is no more inflow of water, then the fish barrel may not overflow.
Hi Thnx for sharing. How do you plan on removing the solids from the fish tank?
Do you not get concerned about whats kinds of plastics you put into the system?
Aren't you suppose to keep the ammonia at 4ppm until the filter can process it all within 24 hours?

+Cyril Roberts Yes to all
Good test! Thanks for doing this!

Hello! What is your bio-media called and where can it be purchased?
+Cyril Roberts For this project the bio media is a combination of the filter mats themselves plus some baler twine purchased from Tractor Supply.
+fishandworms Thanks.
Why do you add nitrates to the water? Haven't seen that before.
Alex C Added Ammonia, not Nitrates.
fishandworms
They are a breakdown product of Ammonia.
