I have been fencing for deer for at least 12 years. My garden is 100’ X 70’ and is surrounded by a 6’ no-climb wire fence. I have a herd of mule deer living next to my garden area and in 12 years only once did deer jump my fence, and that section was a 4 ½’ wooden fence that belonged to my neighbor. He had a truck with a dry box parked in front of the low area. After a year he moved the dry box and within a day I had mule deer in my garden. I added a 6’ section of wire and no deer has ever jumped my fence in the last 11 years. I grow all of the deer favorites, corn, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, strawberries, artichokes, rhubarb, horse radish, peas, radishes, etc. It is deer smorgasbord and not one has ever jumped the fence.
I believe if you confined a deer in a 6’ fenced enclosure and spooked it, they would jump out, but they will NOT jump in to eat. We have multiple small herds of mule deer in my area and they avoid the high fences. If they can’t see over the fence they will not jump it. I let them into my back yard in the winter to clean up the apples, but never into my garden area that is beyond my back yard. The only trespassers I have are racoons and an occasional mole that my cats soon kill. I trap the raccoons with a live trap. It works better than a foot trap because you catch cats in foot traps. I use a bait that cats don’t like to catch the coons.
8’ fences are a waste of money, and I can’t imagine trying to put a 100’ section up! 6’ is bad enough and I use a tractor to hold it up in the middle while I hook up the stretcher.

Thank you. Your video is the one that makes sense to me. I agree about deer not wanting to jump into confined spaces. Just bought 20 T - posts 6 feet high and wire fencing 4 feet high from tractor store. I will buy a few 7 foot T- post and put flags along a high wire here and there. I don't think my boyfriend will help me but at 65 I still think I can do it. I bought special T- post hammer. Thank you.

This was excellent! I have had a large veg garden here for 30 years. Last year, for the first time, I had deer damage in the veg. My veg is enclosed by 4 foot tall wire fence (plus more underground to deter groundhogs). I thought I'd need to put up another band of fencing above this (to raise it to 8 feet), but now I'm going to try running two (instead of one) strands of wire between tall posts all the way around. I'm also going to try to put in low barriers parallel to the outer fence to get that "small spaces" look. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

i'm sure this is effective, but i use an alternative that's much less work. i employ a motion detector combined with a light and a radio. the two bulb style of motion detector is what i use, on one side i put a lightbulb, on the other side i screw in a plug outlet, and keep a radio plugged into that, tuned to a talk station. when a deer approaches the garden the, the light and radio come on together. it works so well, after 5 years of this the deer just stay away.

Thanks much for your video. I have a row of small emerald green arborvitae’s that I planted this spring. Deer are leaving them alone but with winter coming I need a fence and have been looking at double fences . Your video is very helpful in making my decision.

That is actually a fantastic idea! We need to cover a large area and that will cost me thousands. I can see this working.

I agree! I have woods on three sides with a lot of deer traffic. I have kept them out of my veg garden for 22 years with a three and a half foot fence around raised beds that are two feet apart. I also reinforce the bottom for rabbits by buried chicken wire. I have a few groundhogs but my biggest problem is with chipmunks! Any ideas?

A 3 foot fence can also work if you put a chihuahua in there👍

I put a dog in the yard with mule deer and she was glad I let her out. A doe with a fawn will fight a dog every time, and win!

I believe all of your ideas work. I have heard the 8' fence theory since I put up a 6' fence about 12 years ago. I used no-climb with 8' T posts. When I first constructed it, there was one small section about 4' wide near a corner adjacent to my neighbors field. He had a small truck with a box on the back against the fence and until he moved it, no deer had ever been in my garden. It was about 4 1/2 ' high and the deer thought it was a gate!
I put a section of 6' wire across it and no deer has ever been in my garden since.
My garden area is almost a quarter acre so your low fence method in a small space wouldn't work, but the 6' fence has worked perfectly for over 12 years, and my deer are mule deer. They are about the same size as a white tail deer.
My theory is they probably could jump a 6' fence if they were forced to, like being trapped, but they won't jump it to get into the garden. They browse all around it, and winter next to it, but they never jump it. I believe if they can't see over it, they won't jump it. I have one small section adjacent to my back yard that has a 47" fence about 10' long. I put a piece of wire across it, much like your method, but I put it 2' above the 47" chain link and they never jump it, but they jump the 47' fence at the corner where my backyard fence intersects the short fence,
My wife won't let me put a 6' fence across the section because of her "plants", so we are gradually filling in the space with vines and aspen trees. In another year the deer won't be able to jump into my back yard to eat apples. Maybe i will let them in after all of the apples fall off the tree.

2:03 is a Pronghorn and my experience with Pronghorn has been they prefer to go through a fence rather than jump like in your picture. I've had them run for miles next to the train looking for an old loose section of fence to go through.

I was just about to make the same comment: that deer isn't a deer! My experience is similar: pronghorn don't jump over a fence if they can crawl under it. Sadly, we see dead pronghorn around the Rocky Mountains where they get stuck while crawling under barbed wires.
Thankfully, the pronghorn stay out of my garden.

@@GeorgeGeorge-yb2sz I’ve been fencing for deer for many years and eventually people LEARN what works and this DOESN’T WORK. I’ve put in over 2 miles of deer fencing using every fence and technique. If you have enough food for deer ,not a 20/20’ garden it’s not worth the effort to them a 5 or 6’ fence won’t work……I’ve watched deer easily jump over them also a deer can jump WAY higher than a kangaroo dopey! They can easily clear a 10’ fence.

You have nice deer - they can jump even an 8 foot fence if they really want to - but deer tend to be lazy.
