    Do I have to have the original key to rekey

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  2 роки тому

      @Todd Hanthorn It’s easiest as shown if you have the current key but Kwikset makes a tool cradle that makes it easy to rekey without the original key. amzn.to/3U6GQHV

    Does the door knob have to be locked or unlocked before you rekey?

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  2 роки тому

      @socomao3 I didn’t try it with the door locked, only unlocked. I’ll have to test that and see if it works either way…

    Can I use one key to rekey all of my locks?? or one key only works for one lock?

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  2 роки тому

      @Pham You can use one key for as many locks as you like - I have set mine to use the same key for all doors - and all deadbolts! It’s great!

    What if you don’t have the original key? To the lock?

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  3 роки тому

      @Savannah Brown If you don’t have the original key to the Smartkey Lock you have to take the lock apart and either use a Kwikset Reset Cradle (appx $25 on eBay) or manually disassemble the cylinder and old style re-key it.

    What if you have lost the original key?

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  Рік тому

      @Snow Angel This lock can be set to work with any key. If you have lost the key this lock was set to use Kwikset sells a cradle that will allow you to reprogram the lock.

    There's a real good reason why no locksmith will warranty any work done with Smartkey locks. They are over engineered junk that easily fail.

    • @DougForce

      @Brian K i had heard the same thing and looked into that before I purchased any Smartkey locks. The first version of Smartkey was indeed flawed and was redesigned to address those issues. V1 sets were replaced and V2 and later are considered as good as most home keysets.
      I’ve had mine for several years and haven’t had any issues so far. They have been rekeyed several times and worked fine.
      One locksmith mentioned to me that the keysets are not popular with professionals as they don’t require their services to rekey.
      Like most things, it will be great for some not so good for others.

    I'm not like you, I don't have tons of old keys laying around; and I'm not buying one from Kwikset. Any normal person would hope to get a new key at Wal-Mart, Lowes or HD.
    Your video implies I can't do the normal thing- so would I really have to find a way to get a new key from Kwikset? Order one off the internet? Wait for it to arrive? Sounds like pain.

      I just meant that Kwikset makes new keys, which you can get at Walmart, Lowes,, Home Depot, etc. but it’s not a blank key, it’s already cut to a random pattern that you can program your locks to match. But I agree, it’s not for everyone. This lock system is popular with landlords, and that’s why I have lots of old keys that can be repurposed. Hope that makes more sense! I’m new at making videos so I’m still learning. Thanks for watching!

      @@DougForce aaah, i see, now it makes sense. I was trying to figure how buying a blank key would work.
      Thanks for the clarification! 👍

    Too easy to rekey. Not safe

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  3 роки тому +1

      @Gg Jj V1 of the Kwikset Smartlocks did have a hacking vulnerability at release that was quickly corrected but today they are certified as safe by security organizations and generally well regarded. Like any residential lock it’s goal is to keep honest people honest. If a thief wants in a window is the easiest/fastest way in. Rekeying is easy with the tool, and physical access to both sides of the door, but not so much without. For real estate situations where the key changes frequently it’s a good trade off.

      It would be better if the "tool" was unique. Anyone could get that "tool" and rekey the door. Am I correct?

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  Рік тому

      @Darryl Mensah The lock can only be rekeyed if you have the current key as well as the tool. So no worries about someone just walking up on you.
