as a pistons fan, i knew as soon as ben left the team, we would never win a championship ever again. i remember in 06 the pistons philosophical mindset changed with the introduction of a new coach that was incompatible to Wallace's playstyle. had larry brown stayed in detroit, no doubt the pistons would have retained wallace and most likely went on to win another championship. in 05, they were a few minutes from repeating if not for some lapses on defense. (cough rasheed wallace.)
i mean the fact that the pistons didn't even return to another finals after his departure just proves how much the pistons benefited from having his defense. Really this team collapsed after chauncey was traded. those two were the most important players on the team and they kept them going.

Besides Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell nobody in the history of the game had more defensive win shares than Wallace in 03-04. The two highest playoff defensive win shares belong to Wallace as well. His 03 and 04 seasons were worth 25% more than any other defensive season in the past 30 years. Think about that, no player in 30 years has been worth even 75% of what Wallace was worth defensively in his prime. Just an absolute freak.

"How GOOD Was Ben Wallace Actually?"
He was top 5 defending big man in the modern era! I would only rank Olajuwon, Mutombo and Rodman on top of him defensively from the modern era! Wallace should definitely be in HOF! 4 time DPOY and a ring are enough for the nomination!

How is he not in the HoF already? Nobody can deny he was the heart and soul of an NBA title team, that was also runner up in 7 games next year, made multiple All NBA and D teams and was 4 time DPOY. If you win a league wide award that goes to the best Defensive player 4 times, that itself should get you in.

He shines bright in Pistons because he has a lot of scorers around him. This undrafted guy worked his way up to be an all-star. Although he’s undersize, he’s so hard inside the paint that even Shaq was having a hard time scoring on him.

Im old enough to remember Bird vs Magic , Bad Boys, MJ's Bulls, San Antonio's Dynasty and that shamble that was Miami. That Pistons from 04\05 are my favorite team I ever watched. Ben and Rasheed, Billups, Hamilton, Prince, these guys where the definition of team play, effort, and heart. You watch the NBA in any era and teams take effort breaks throughout a game or season, it is understandable. A long season and a long post season and conserving some fuel in the tank is a legit thing. However, those Piston teams every damn trip down the floor against them they would D up like it was game seven. Alot of that was because of Ben Wallace. One of my favorite NBA highlights to this day was when he not only blocked Shaq, but put Shaq on his ass with only one hand. Great player should be in HOF.
