This show is so frozen in the aughts culture of the US and I love it for that reason as I was in highschool when it aired. It was so prescient from the flip phones, the war on terror, the hummer vehicles, the pre-housing collapse speculation, the hairstyles. This show would be vastly different if it were made today. It just would not have the same flavor. It was truly made in the perfect era-frozen in amber. Thank God David Chase graced us with this masterpiece.
The decline of the mob contrasted against the tipping point into the decline of America. Totally agree, it just wouldn’t have the right tone if it were made today.
I love it how Dr Melfi just calls Tony on his shit through Therapeutic conversation. Even though AJ got on my nerves, I did feel bad for him. Having Tony as a father would be so fucking frustrating. No matter what you do in your life, right or wrong, it'd never be good enough. At least AJ and Meadow grew up to be nothing like their hypocritical parents. Tony and Carmella did their best as parents, but lets face it, they do take a lot of their anger out on their kids, especially Tony towards poor AJ. Tony is such a hypocrite and I love it how Dr Melfi constantly reminds him of it during their Therapy sessions. Psychology in a nutshell.
Bro imagine if this was shot more recently and instead of Tony walking in and seeing AJ in a chit chat room, He walks in and sees him making a Tik Tok. Lol
Everyone misses the key moment, Tony refusing to open up and going back to AJ. He refuses to take an assessment of himself or his life, and shirks any and all sense of wrongdoing. Narcissism makes sense, he learned it from his mother.
Melfi should have pressed the issue. She was in the right direction about Tony lifestyle. And than when Tony didn’t answer the question and changed the subject back to AJ she backed down. She should have gone back to it and reminded him that his criminal lifestyle is destroying tony’s own family including his own son.
Maybe not the lifestyle, but just the parenting. Parents should always remind their kids how dangerous it is to their future to let life just slip between your fingers. It’s always a constant threat that young adults fall victim to. They become to comfortable with mediocre life

I always tried to lay off all AJ's problems on a learning disorder, but...well, stupidity would be a learning disorder, wouldn't it?
I love that the therapist just argues with Tony. That's great therapy there, client is vulnerable and opens up, therapist attacks him for his perspective :)
I'll always be blown away at this show for creating the connections and tendencies between the family and real life in the 90s and 2000s. Even in the Mob, Tony sees his son glued to the computer and even in the Mob, AJ is misunderstood and sees his father as the absentee, glued to work and obsessed with the things that it gives instead of focusing on love and kinship. It is a mirror image of numerous families in the capitalist age of the 2000s
early 2010s too, the entire zoomer generation was pretty much welded to computer screens, phone screens for the younger zoomers, glad i was a computer user
Tony was constantly battling mentally whether to bring his son into the life or not. He wanted him to be a doctor/lawyer, but it was evident that AJ wasn’t capable of that. This is the point where those thoughts started to completely dictate his relationship with his son. His defense mechanism was to act like this.
I was like AJ during highschool, depression/anxiety and trying to hide away from problems/reality while gaming a lot. My father was just like tony. He never expressed it directly tho but i could feel he felt exactly like this. As sopranos we are also catholic family, where is stigma to talk about depression or other mental health problems. All worked out after i moved to another country and find my own path
Blockbuster Manager #1-"We can't have him in our employee break room anymore. That much is true." Blockbuster Manager #2- "Employee break room? He's gotta GO."
Tony doesn’t hate AJ. He just hate what he’s become. Tony somewhat prefers Meadow because she takes a lot of his characteristics (mostly bad). In some ways, Meadow is like the son Tony never had.
I really love this scene honestly because season 6 Dr. Melfi is just different. You don’t really know why at first but then this scene hits and you realize “oh she’s done taking his shit”. Dr. Melfi was engulfed by the curiosity that she had w treating tony as a patient and how it gave her some excitement to her life, but by season 6 after dealing with the endless loops for too long, she’s had enough. This entire season she is way more stern and upfront with the way she talks to him. She isn’t exactly babying him anymore or trying to figure out issues. She asks him what he’s thinking and feeling, explain the situation, and then feeds him exactly the cold hard truth. Here was the best example because she hit him where it’s personal. His mother. Phenomenal writing man
That last line is just mmm chefs kiss. “Ok. But I have to point out, what you resent Carmela doing for AJ, protecting him from his father, is the very same thing you wished your mother hade done for you”
The AJ scene shows very well how parents “snowball” these arguments. It starts with them being angry over AJ getting fired, then it moves over to him buying Cristal for $500 a pop and him hanging out with Hernan who crippled some girl in his car (which wasn’t even his fault!). They voice displeasure over life choices that are not theirs to live.
Good clip. Tony's attitude is understandable. All fathers, and mothers should be mentally prepared for the possibility of having kids they might not like as they grow up
The scene between Tony and his therapist talking crap about AJ reminds me of the beginning of GTA 5 where Michael tells his therapist how pissed he is at Jimmy's lack of achievement and commitment
@@Wombats-1 the blonde rich girl was Devin, whose family owned Pillsbury I think. Rhiannon was a younger model who AJ reconnected with while in the mental hospital.

Tony acting like his kid is nothing like him. When in reality hes literally the exact same kind of person. Just not quite as tough or brave. Yet. That excuse about caring for the environment is exactly like something Tony or his mob buddies would say. "Two black guys did it." "He jumped outta the tree and attacked me with a chainsaw. I got a right to defend myself." And that scheme of selling promotional items is literally how Tony makes a living and has everything that he does.
Everything in the sopranos is exceptional , the writing , the casting , the camerawork ...and then on top of that you have the sublime acting with James Gandolfini knocking it out of the park in every scene ..we were so blessed to have witnessed this show

Funny because Beansie was still able to have a drink and party in his wheelchair.
Tony doesn't hate him. He hates himself but directs that energy towards anything and everything that gives him the excuse to do so.
I mean just look at Saints of Newark.
Dragged up the Sopranos corpse and wasted it to tell a movie about riots that they ACTUALLY wanted to make.
You couldn't make it today. Today every show must be 90% black and 75% gay.
I'm gad you caught that. Very observant, the sacred and the propane.
LOL imagine growing up in the 00s and thinking the culture was praiseworthy!
Yeah they grew up WORSE
You kidding. Tony and Carmela are the worst parents ever. So incredibly stupid but thinking they are smart in parenting department. A total debacle.

I think realistically he’d be on discord
Everyone misses the key moment, Tony refusing to open up and going back to AJ.
He refuses to take an assessment of himself or his life, and shirks any and all sense of wrongdoing.
Narcissism makes sense, he learned it from his mother.

Melfi should have pressed the issue. She was in the right direction about Tony lifestyle. And than when Tony didn’t answer the question and changed the subject back to AJ she backed down. She should have gone back to it and reminded him that his criminal lifestyle is destroying tony’s own family including his own son.
You have no regard for the lives of coffee tables do you
Maybe not the lifestyle, but just the parenting. Parents should always remind their kids how dangerous it is to their future to let life just slip between your fingers. It’s always a constant threat that young adults fall victim to. They become to comfortable with mediocre life
I laughed way too hard at Gandolfini's "it's still a classic?" line delivery

Did you ever make peace with your dad?

Melfi always checkmated Tony and he hated her for it. But she was also the only one he could talk to.

There’s nothing more that a father hates than walking into his sons room and his son happy
The AJ scene shows very well how parents “snowball” these arguments. It starts with them being angry over AJ getting fired, then it moves over to him buying Cristal for $500 a pop and him hanging out with Hernan who crippled some girl in his car (which wasn’t even his fault!).
Everything in the sopranos is exceptional , the writing , the casting , the camerawork ...and then on top of that you have the sublime acting with James Gandolfini knocking it out of the park in every scene ..we were so blessed to have witnessed this show
I loved that by the end, Melfi was just so over Tony’s shit…just like everyone that wasn’t an ass kissing scumbag. It’s like the only people that didn’t see Tony for what he was, a sociopathic scumbag, were the ones that weren’t fellow criminals kissing his ass.
What AJ needed for Tony to do is have a "take your son to work day". That would have straightened him out.
Dr. Melfi's role in this series as the perfect undercut to toxic masculinity goes PAINFULLY underappreciated by Sopranos fans.
