I like to buy fish with my Dad
He can tell the good fish from the bad
With salt and turmeric I marinate the fish
Ilish! Ilish! Ilish!
If with (green) chilly mustard is ground
It won't be bitter, it has been found
Grind with poppy seeds, (add)salt and turmeric
Mustard Oil makes the paste nice and thick
Coat each piece of fish with this paste
Add green chilly according to taste
In banana leaf gently place the fish
Ilish! Ilish! Ilish!
Tie with string, layer it twice if you can
Place each packet in a hot frying pan
Every now and then remember to turn
Let the outer leaves slowly burn
The fish will cook in this way
It will taste of smoke and shorshe
All you need is some rice and this fish
Ilish! Ilish! Ilish!

Another of Sawan Dutta's heart-touching creation. I am a resident of West Bengal and yes Ilish is a must in the season of monsoon. However my granfather still talks about the Ilish of River Padma. According to him, Islish of River Padma is far tastier than that of Rver Ganga

rohini bhattacharya actually no! Dry pan. The only oil is the raw mustard oil used in the marinade. Thanks - it's more American than English, this one 😊

where do you live? i got mine from 4 bungalows, andheri west :) they used to keep it in hypercity malad as well in the past...plus i think there are plenty more places

And well of all the musical flavours I've used so far in my vlogs, I'm most partial to this one 😃 And to answer your grandma - I bought it a few weeks back when Ilish was 1500 bucks a kg, and yes, since this was such a huge one, it was steep 😒, about 1900 bucks or so! There were smaller ones but the visual impact would have been lost, somewhat, with a tiny fish, no?

@Sawan, that is indeed an expensive fish. But after all, even though it looks appealing to the eyes, the main point is that it will be a treat to our tastebuds💟💟.
Shashaank Dey I believe it's gotten cheaper now after the floods though, depending on where you're accessing it 😃 And yes, I was thinking fancy supermarkets charge more for say, norwegian salmon - and this is tastier any day, at least to most of us bongs 😃
Sawan Dutta, It has certainly reduced after the flood. In Colaba, now Ilish costs 1100 bucks for a kilo. Very frankly I hate all these exotic white preparations of fish. I mean literally they have no flavour. I tried this raw fish in Netherlands (You might have also)- It was gruesome. Maane kacha maach khabar teke bhaalo uposh rakha😂😂😅
