Is It Possible To Make Bass Playing Cool?!

- Today I'm reacting to a very cool video my producer sent me of @CharlesBerthoud demonstrating the evolution of all bassists. Is it possible to make playing the bass look cool? I think Charles may be the person who is doing that. He is incredible.
Here is a link to his video: • Evolution of EVERY bas...

Thank you for the kind words Justin!! And yes I can confirm the Rockin 1000 was chaos in the best possible way 🤣
Keep it up Charles! You’re a legend
Awesome! Do you need a 201st bassist?
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain
Piss off, Justin! I'll do it! You couldn't lend me a bass amp though, could you? Mine's crap. I can't even get my Action Man to vibrate enough to fall off when I sit him on it.
This video is a lie. I'm the greatest bass player in the world and literally destroyed Charles in a bass battle over a year ago. The guy in the video is obviously a clone. Here's the proof: ua-cam.com/video/nNaTwK76IM8/v-deo.html
just do the collab already!!
A bass player in a band is like a priest or healer type in a fantasy adventure group. They may look weak on attacks unlike a guitarist or a vocalist, but they're essential to keep the group alive & rocking.
Hell of an analogy. Love it.
So…boring gameplay basically?
@@moart87 Quite a few hard bass lines out there, as demonstrated in the video... Just because a lot of bands write and mix the bass into nothing does not mean it is boring to play. Honestly, I find playing bass to be more fun than guitar. Sure, it is not as flashy and it is not front and center in most songs, but it has so much versitility in the way you play it that you can make it sound completely different in a heartbeat.
-Also, I can tell you have never played a healer seriously... Healing is some of the most stressful, busy stuff you can do in most major end games. Keeping idiots alive as well as paying attention to the fight mechanics, your rotations, tanks cooldowns, your cooldowns, and keeping yourself alive so you can keep everyone elso alive is a lot of work. Not to mention being blamed for everyone elses mistakes... Fun stuff lol
I always use this analogy. Singer is the magic damage, guitar is melee DPS, bass is healer, drummer is tank
@@sleejay8910 Hell yeah!
For me, bass is everything. If a song doesn’t have a killer bass line, I want nothing to do with it. My favorite songs/bands all have amazing, dramatic bass.
Could you give some examples? I am honestly curious about what a dramatic bass might sound like!
@@muenchhausenmusic way to put me on the spot 😂 first thing that comes to mind is Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch. The bass comes in with drama. It’s not meant to be something in the background, it’s a very forward, loud sound. It has passion, it has purpose. Not to say that background bass isn’t important, it’s just different. Nikki is such a queen of a bass player. Stefan Osdal of Placebo is also an amazing, dramatic bassist. Any sophisticated listener listening to a Placebo track will always follow the bass. The Bitter End is a great example.
@@muenchhausenmusic Joy Division (Disorder, Something must break, She lost Control in particular), and the Smiths (This Charming man) have pretty solid basslines. for something a bit more grimy and simple "TV on the Radio- Wrong Way" has a delicious dirty bassline that grooves hard.
@@muenchhausenmusic There is a saying about live shows from Bootsy Collins, "taking them to the church", referring to the intensity of the experience, the origin might from earlier Funkadelic, but it reflects how dramatic that space bass can be. On comments section of some live interpretations of "I'd Rather Be With You" you can find such comments.
For the longest time, I wasn't aware of bass in music. That's all changed now. When it perfectly locks in with the drummer? Perfection...👍✌️
Charles is one of the most impressive bass players on youtube I've ever seen... people go on and on about Davie504, and he's great too but Charles is a true PRO
Davie spanks Charles
Or should I say . . . SLAPS!
Davie504 knows him already…. ua-cam.com/video/u_IZuPwlZK8/v-deo.html 9:40 seconds in.
Charles is a better musician than Davie
@@jogonmf 12.7M subs disagree.
Charles is such a genuine, bona fide non-wanky, musical genius! Life enhancing musician
Nah, he's wanky as fuck. Always overplaying and showing off.
As a 50 year old bass player who's been playing bass for 35 years (no frustrated guitar phase. I started as a bass player), I can say his phase thing is spot on!!
As a kid Micheal Shuman (aka Mikey Shoes) of Queens Of the Stone Age bassist, first start with guitar at 8 or 9 as a start. Being in a few Junior High Bands and High School bands, switched to the Bassist willingly. I think he is underrated bassist. Very cool guy by the way.
@@l.anders8867 Mikey Shoes is great!
Charles is a wizard ninja warlock bassist. Inhuman. Supernatural. No human should be able to do what he does. I can’t get my head around it.
Charles Is a genius bass player, as is Davie504. They're brilliant.
He's an amazing soloist but for me, playing bass is all about being in a band
@@stevec6427 He's been in several bands, too.
@@stevec6427He can clearly and obviously play bass in a band lol
Charles owes his spike in popularity to Davie504 giving him exposure on his channel. (a reaction to the concert with TwoSet Violin would be nice!) But that talent, that's all him. UA-cam has been a great launching pad for finding new musicians during the pandemic, and Berthoud is one of the best of the lot.
The man is such a melodic player. And so loveably, awkwardly goofy.

@@tillandsiausneoides LOL. Try again. I live at a local hospital compound, and fielded calls from friends and industry colleagues looking for rooms or ICU beds for their relatives at the height of our second and third waves.
I've had people die on me for lack of beds or treatment, before we finally got the vaccines and things started levelling off. Doctors died treating COVID patients due to exposure..
Over forty years of living through influenza and dengue surges, and we've never seen anything like it.
So you can take your internet conspiracy theories and stick them in a hole. These past two years have been hell for those of us who actually give a damn about other people's lives.
@@tillandsiausneoides Sod off
Charles would have grown anyway. Its impossible to suppress that kinda talent
@Taplu Bambhos true.. though Davie sped up that process by a year or 2. Charles has evolved a ton as a UA-camr as well. He's always been a great bassist, but he's learned to cater to the algorithm more
Billy Sheehan is a pretty damn cool bass player, and his solos are amazing.
Shame he's a Scientologist.

He's not human. He's evolved into something else.

As an aspiring bass player, thanks for providing an episode to inspire me!
I've been a bass player since 2004 and Charles makes me want to quit lol

@@alexallen6286 I sometimes feel that with Jacob Collier but usually he just inspires me lol, I know I'll never be as technically good as him because I wasn't raised around music/in a musical family so I can never have perfect pitch but I just love music and it's nice to see other people who love it as much as me but are a lot better lol
Mark King of level 42 has some of the coolest bass guitars and plays exceedingly well...
Things I didnt know I needed in my life - Justin Hawkins breaking down music and being amazing (as well as introducing me to Ren) has made my entire day - ive been watching your videos all day and enjoying them muchly thank you so much.
Huge Charles fan, so so happy to see you take your time to celebrate his content.
Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Flea and Bill Gould from Faith No More are all cool af. Jason Newsted too.
Jason Newsted? You can’t put Jason even in the same sentence when mentioning Claypool. 😅
Facts!
PNut!
Listen to YES' 1972 masterpiece FRAGILE (here on YT free) and then report back here, gary.
Only listen to the BASS guitar.
Not only is CHRIS SQUIRE still the most important / "best" overall bassist ever, but all the other GOATs -- from Geddy to Claypool to Cliff Burton to Steve Harris to Billy Sheehan to ALL of them --- say Chris Squire is THEIR GOD as well!
The only ppl who don't name Squire as the GOAT are those who haven't really listened to him yet.
His bass playing is STILL REVOLUTIONARY --- 50 years later!!!
(he's the busiest player ever.....but NOT showing off! His melodic invention, for instance, has yet to be surpassed.) (Ditto his monster tone!)
@@jonbongjovi1869 Entwistle started that revolution, though.
Charles is a really cool guy. This is the collab I've been wanting. You guys would sound like Bang Tango. :)
Charles Berthoud is wonderful to listen to. He has the potential to rub shoulders with the best of them.
Soo happy to see this vid, yes give Charles the recognition he deserves!
Two of the finest bassists to ever have lived is rarely mentioned in the stratosphere of bassists, Bruce Foxton of the Jam, a consummate bassist and a legend. And the Co creator of disco Mr Bernard Edwards. Both of which deserve to be talked about by our Lovely JUSTIN F'IN HAWKINS
Totally agree with you and I’ll add Paul Simonon and Mani.
I so love Bruce.
That was fun!! I started playing bass about four years ago as something to fill the loneliness after my Wife of 17 years passed away. I found a Bass Player on UA-cam named Nicki Tedesco who is a professional player and writes and records her own music and we became friends, She since that time has moved to Maui from L.A. and holds court on Twitch for a dedicated bunch of followers every now and then. Why Bass? Well as a kid in Junior High, High School and then a few years after that I played trombone (still do) and it is in Bass Clef so I thought transferring would be easier, it wasn't but I've met so many cool players and had so much fun learning the basics of the instrument that it drug me up out of the depression I was in and has helped me cope and discover new music along the way.
Cheering to you mate
@@lowbassdude1987 Thank-you!
Love seeing you feature an amazing player like Charles who while popular could be much bigger
The Derek Smalls level is the one that so many desire, but only one rock god can achieve.
You know you’ve made it when you’re trapped inside a cocoon on an arena stage.
@@StrangeDevice I love it! 😂
💯Fact
Charles and Rick Beato are two channels I subscribe to. I love that you've had crossovers with both of them. And Charles is a music monster. A true inspiration. (I really should get his tapping course, but then I'd have to actually practice...)
I never had the dedication to learn to play even close to this level, but listening to this kind of talent lights the fires again and makes me want to start playing again. Charles is amazing to say the least, and love watching his entertaining videos!
Charles might be the best bassist I’ve ever heard. Bar none.
Davie gonna have a field day with this
Love Charles' playing and his sense of humor. Bass has been cool for YEARS going back to Jaco and then Chris Squire and Geddy Lee and bunches of others.
Ohhh lordy I've been waiting for this!
i appreciate your appreciation of the bass Justin and knowledge of the greatest instrument ever
I've hired this guy to play tracks for me ... He can play anything
Can he play the oboe?
@@Nickbaldeagle02 yeah he can play an oboe line on the bass
"Just kidding I love bass players" (*insert photo of Frankie not looking amused)
Glad to see Charles on this channel!
How do I love thee? Every video I literally laugh out loud! Which is pretty rare in UA-cam videos. I think it is the somewhat absurd nature of the conversation. A monologue disguised as a dialogue, more so, like two people talking, and me sitting on the couch with you. And just laughing because WTF!
The best thing about bass player is we love other bass players. That's how you know one of us when you find one. Nobody else in a band feels quite that way about their counterparts. ;)
True. Bass players stick together 😊
Misa, bass player of Band-Maid is insanely cool. We call her the barefoot assassin because she slays you with bass while playing barefoot. Coolest bass player around town charlie brown 😎
Rock on, Charles!
This is great. Big fan of both of you 👍🏼
Good day to you all it’s Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnn 🎶🎶🎶
„Royal Blood“ isn‘t too shabby either.
Yes yes yes it is! My bro is a superlative bass player (also double bassist but… off-topic).
NB His little Islington pub band, in its heyday (ie before half of them died) consisted of a sax player from the Platters, trombonist from Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, a pianist out on day release (best I ever saw), and Würzel from Motörhead. Who tried to get off with my mum.
Hope u had a good B-Day
Thxs for riding again Justin

Love me some Charles. Fellas a legend.
Basstastic! Nice one Justin. 🎶🌟👍
You have a bass player that makes it look cool all the fuckin time.
I love it when seeing someone just smiling while doing something they love like playing music.
I remember pre-Davie Charles with a few k subs, glad to see he has the subs he has now. Deserves every one of them! A genius on the bass.
Same here. I remember checking out his website and seeing he already had quite a storied resume but not as much recognition online. Puts a smile on my face to see his popularity and following having grown to the extent that it has; his combination of raw talent and relentless dedication making him one of the best bass players I've ever heard. His sound is so clean, and I love his melodic compositions. Just a joy to listen to.
Eeeeyyyaa Hawkins how comes you’re such a nice bloke saying such nice things!
Love your content man! Keep on truckin
The "way too many notes" phase is hilarious!
And he plays the "real pro phase" tiny hands!
Yes! I play guitar but started picking up the bass a year ago. It's so much fun!
This dude is amazing. I'm a musician and he has inspired me to give Bass a shot. Phenomenal.
Bass is awesome. Every guitar player should have a bass and work out all the parts on both instruments, especially if you are a song writer. It's a lot of fun and it teaches you more about the song that you're writing or learning.
Does that mean every bassist should have a guitar? I want to play bass well, not get sidetracked into guitar too.
@@TheRip72 Being versatile is only an advantage, although best to get reasonably proficient on it first before you start dividing attention
Yeah great call to do Charles great player and fun videos, 👍👍👍
This guy is snobtacular. I absolutely love his pinky-ring. And how he decides for the world it has a "Flea phase", etc.
Your new gawd of bazze has arrived.
Playing with that many people is a wonderful experience. I once played open air in the streets of the City of London as part of an 800+ strong saxophone ensemble.
As an old bass player myself I would advise people to check out Stewart Morrow (R.I.P.) from his days in New Model Army. I think growing up listening to bass players like him influenced my playing style. My fellow band mates at the time use to want me to play something simpler, the guitarist said to me half-jokingly" why do you persist in playing lead bass", did I tone it down, of course not!
I toured with them back in that period...he was really good...drove that band.
Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Geddy Lee of Rush and Jack Bruce of Cream are driving forces of their bands, irreplaceable, and definitely cool
There us NO mistaking a Steve Harris bass line. 🤩
Not to mention Geezer Butler, John Paul Jones, and Les Claypool
@@QuantumBeeWellness John Taylor irreplaceable in Duran Duran
@@mikebest634 and ALL these bassists (cept for Jack Bruce) SAY CHRIS SQUIRE was their GOD.
(ALL of YES' peers wanted to be YES, and Jimmy Page's FIRST call after Zep died was to call BILL BRUFORD up (!) but BB was busy, so it was Chris Squire and Alan (Yuck) White. Sabbath, Zep, Iron Maiden and ALL of them looked up to YES and did stuff inspired by YES.)
George is a beast bassist, I've been playing bass 35 years and facing retirement after sustaining knuckle injuries in an accident, the physical pain doesn't hurt as much as facing the fact that I'm probably never gonna play live again. 😢
Eeeeyahh Justin..of course bass players are cool. We are the ones, if do our job correctly, that makes the arses wiggle to the music.
Justin, you got to work with the greatest bass player of all time- Mark King at the Taylor Hawkins Concert.
You hear the music, you FEEL the bass.
I’ve been watching Charles for a few years now, and he truly is an inspirational player!
And he gets better every year.
I've been hoping you'd review Charles. He's incredible. I'd highly recommend people listen to his fretless work, especially 'when they say you have too many frets' and 'Metal on a steel fretless'. Hi SOAD cover is also great.
Chris Squire of Yes and Tony Levin of King Crimson/Stick Men/etc are both super cool IMO. They were both exceptional musicians who had major influence on their respective bands' output.
Omg, Tony Levin is awesome!!
Tony Levin is the man. Great on the Chapman stick as well
Yes my 2 favourite bass players are Bo from The Kami Band and Misa from Bandmaid. Love the two of them 😍😍
I've a lot of time for Charles, massively talented musician and seems to be a genuinely nice fella.
I believe you have made it possible 🤘💥
The title almost made me mad, then I actually clicked the video and it’s just the kindest person ever talking about an amazing bass player
Charles is a bass beast!
Good that this guy is getting a shout out he is sh8t hot! Nothing I’ve seen him struggle with and entertaining too!
The first band I ever saw live was Violent Femmes, very bass heavy. Also where I saw my first (and to date only) xylophone solo!
My baby just cares for me was what got me into double bass. Then it was The Chain. Well done on the bass knowledge too. 👍🏻
I've been a fan of Charles for a while now. His song in medieval tuning is incredible.

I've been watching Charles for a long time he's beyond a bassist he's a musician.
I love Charles! Thanks Mr. Hawkins!
Subed to this guy. Love seeing what does next to. This is pure funk.
Mark king from Level 42 was very good at slapping. Had a rubber thumb ring around his thumb. So he could really hit that bass.
That is some awesome bass playing.

I've been following Charles B since Davie mentioned him and held him in high regard. I like them both tho coz I can't choose one over the other. Each has own distinct style. Bassist unite!😂
Wow Bass playing??? U should have invited the mighty Frankie!!! Hello Justin, good day to you mate!🤘
One of the most creative bass players is Misa with Band Maid. She is very creative and can switch between pick, fingers and slap without pause. She is often allowed to play lead ( yes lead ) and can tap in dialogue with Kanami on lead guitar. I know you have checked Band Maid but try 'Play'.
Bass playing has always been cool since the Stranglers were signed!!..😃👍👍👍
Great video!
Charles is a stud. Great guy too.
T'is a well known fact that the bassist and drummer are the engine room and time keepers of the band. If either one is bad the whole shebang collapses. 🖖
Been a huge fan of Charles' UA-cam channel for quite some time (as i have this very channel). Absolutely incredible talent, and if it all fails for him he could easily stand in as a James Blunt
look-a-like... 🤟
This dude is awesomeness
Charles is a class act, in all senses of the world. He does not use technique just to show off technique, but always in service of his music. I grew up with bass, and the coolest bassist of my generation was Jack Casady of the Airplane and Tuna. Today, we have technical wizards- Mohini Dey, Federico Malaman, Charles, Vic Wooten, Hadrian Feraud, Davide Biale and many others.
Yeah, I remember watching a little clip on Jaco Pastorius, where he’s is begging to get a gig, it’s a sadness of the bass, but it’s so needed…
Before even watching, my reply was YES! And after your prowling video where you showed your bass player prowling around the stage, i suddently fancied him. So yes, is the anwser to that one.
"This can't count as content, can it?" Excellent name for your channel.
Charles is the man so extremely talented
As mentioned quite a few times before, Davie504 made bass playing cool again... and he's also rather good
I love your "Chavo del ocho" hat.
Yup my favorite bassist @!
A good friend of mine was a bass player in a band. He showed me some of how cool and important bass players are, when I was in my most idol-worshipping teens and was all focused on the charismatic singers. When he passed away under very unfortunate circumstances - he was buried with his favorite bass guitar in his arms.
Really good to see you back, I think your Chanel is brilliant. Hopefully you’ll get the monetisation to upgrade the 1 bedroom flat. Keep up the decent content you actually are a very funny guy. Also More Ren please 🙏🏻 peace ✌🏻
Bass is one of my favourite sounds!! I've always assumed it was super cool just because that's the way I see it 😆 I especially lpve the 'Flea' & 'slap' phase....definitely my kind of funk 🤣
