4:23 as I see it, the cap and the barrel are not completely aligned!

I've looked at this pen two or three times and I feel a) it is too expensive for what it is and b) it might be more palatable if they offered just a one nib FP option, no roller accessory or second nib. Seriously this could be maybe $125-150 pen with a steel nib and none of the extras which many might relegate to a junk drawer.

Ditto! I have a couple of multi-use pens and guess what, they stay as fountain pens. The other bits stay in the box in some corner of the office. Why would someone think that carrying 2-3 bits of equipment that need storage plus assembly to use would be more efficient than just carrying a separate fountain pen and a rollerball which are ready to go.

It is more a distinguishing features that makes TI pens stand out, so they included it. I get it, and there must be people who switch between modes.

i wasn't going to reply to this at first because i figured the body of the pen was steel and only the nib titanium, but given that the body is at least in part titanium, that probably explains the price.

Trying not to be negative. Maybe if I tried one some of concerns might be asuaged.
I realy like the idea of a titanium pen.
The Lamy Studio shape is attractive.
But, when the cap came off my interest waned. To me the uncapped shape is just plain ugly. Compare those capless lines withe the Lamy Studio.
For some reason I have only just started coming across Bock nibs in reviews and nearly all of them reported either faults, a poor writing experience, or that the reviewer preferred one or other generic nib manufacturers over Bock.
The sharp profiled grooves on the grip look like a dirt trap. OK an occasional scrub with a toothbrush would fix that. I'm sure my wife wouldn't mind me borrowing hers.
The idea that I could convert it to a biro, or gel pen leaves me cold. If I wanted that I would want to buy this as two seperate pens. Though the small chuck like mechanism is neat. A great idea.
For $20 more I have just bought a Sailor Pro Gear Realo with it's renowned gold nib. OK, it's a Japanese import, but we do have global markets. Maybe another reason to seperate it into two pens and get the price down.
Finally they don't say where it is made. That matters to me.
I like innovation and wish these folk well. As you point out there has been a considerable amount of quality thinking in the detail of the design. This one is just not for me, at the moment.
Thanks for this review. Thorough and thoughtful as always. I enjoy them a lot, you open up a pen world I merely dip into.

I've been looking at this pen for a while but with the price, I can't justify the way the cap posts and scratches the pen. It should have been screw on.

5:52 “While titanium nibs traditionally provide a bit firmer writing experience. . .”
That is opposite of my experience. I have two pens with Ti nibs, and both of them are semi-flexible and have a soft feel, which pleases me. I like them so much, it makes me wonder why Ti hasn't caught on more widely as a nib material.

I like the BigIDesign Fountain EDC Pen, so I bought that. I think for a price of Ti Ultra, it's better to just buy two different pens from the BigIDesign. Also, I think the Ti Ultra rollerball or ball point will only secure the refill at the tip, where as the Ti Alto pen secures the refill at the tip but also there is an adjustable back cap that helps to keep the refill in place.

I have a Ti Click EDC Pen I bought almost two years ago. It's not fountain capable, just ballpoint, etc. It's well made and does accept my favorite refills, but the grip and shape just aren't comfortable for me so I never use it. I'd rather just buy separate pen types in this case.

Wait? Weight! 44g was too 'tactically' heavy for me and so mine is in the drawer more as a desk G2 gel pen. The Bock Ti F is terrific and so transplanted to a Karas Vertex.

      Hey John!
I own many Big Idea Design Products as well because they're so well machined and I love the strength & look of Titanium!
My favorite is the TPT Slide Topographic Edition by bestdamn edc. Check out his YT channel, if you haven't already, as he just did a tour of the brand new big idea design 2nd location Factory & building headquarters where they have a cool gentlemen's type game room with electric go-karts ping pong, pool, all kinds of stuff but the tour of their Factory & all the more limited stuff they're going to be able to make with their machinery and huge space like their new limited edition custom fixed blades are neat!
I wanted to ask you, big idea design also made a more recent fountain pen specifically for EDC "EDC Fountain Pen". Have you tried that one, it doesn't have a screw on cap which I don't like but so many people are raving about it. I was wondering if you prefer the newer one or this original.

Why don’t you trim off some of the foam in the tube to allow it to sit further in and avoid the tip striking the end cap of tube?

Thanks for yet another impartial and thorough review, David. I would like to suggest the following to Big Idea Design for this beautiful pen:
    - Replace the ballpoint section with another fountain pen section holding the additional [different size] nib.
    - Perhaps partner with a nib meister to provide custom nib grinds for added fees.
    - Offer a similar ballpoint/rollerball set to those who prefer these insteuments.

This Ti Ultra reminds me very much of the Lamy 2000 in the brushed steel finish.
Shame the Titanium nib came out of align as it would have been good to see a side by side comparison with the steel nib. I suspect the Ti nib would give some line variation. Not sure the pen’s overall appeal is enough to add one to my collection though. It’s a bit too utilitarian for me.

    • @God-mb8wi

honestly, it writes like any other nib. i can't tell if it writes better than steel or not. but then again, i find that all my steel nibs are much smoother than any of my gold nibs. so maybe i'm stupid. it writes smooth. mine did not come bent.

    • @BuffaloNickel9
      @BuffaloNickel9 11 місяців тому +1

I'm the same way, my steel nibs have 100 % written more smoothly & better than all 3 pure gold nibs I've tried! 14k Montblanc, 18k Montblanc both great but not quite as good as my Schmidt or Bock 180 ef nibs. And finally, the worst was the 21k Sailor 1911 nib in fine- horrid! You can hear it literally scratching the page as it writes sometimes.
Small sample size, but steel nibs have been great

Great review David. I have this pen, and it's excellent. But Big Idea Design have really shot themselves in the foot sending you one with such a lousy nib. The price point deserves a physical check to make sure the components are up to scratch.
But I use mine for work, and it's indestructible and the section is fantastic.

@@TheDrunkLibertarian I have found the customer service to be exceptionally good, and have no doubt they would rectify the situation for anyone with a dud nib. I wish this review had come out last month! I recently discovered this pen and I was looking for video reviews just like this. I could not find any that were this detailed, thanks for making great content! I couldn't resist purchasing the pen, and fully agree with a lot of the points you mentioned. My titanium nib was also very misaligned when I unboxed it. Initially when I used it, it had issues with flow and baby's bottom. It's probably too late to email the company now. The stainless steel nib that it comes with is fine at least.
