  • In this video I am going to make a deerskin, roll up foraging bag without a pattern. With minimal tools and leather working experience you can follow along and make for one yourself. I show multiple ways to stitch and assemble so you can adjust to your skill and equipment level.     "I don't have a pattern" Love it! I have never had a pattern for anything I've made. Sometimes it goes better than others, but usually it's pretty good and very educational ;)

      I never start with a pattern but if I like the outcome then I sometimes make a pattern after. All part of the process.

    I've never seen this kind of bag before. It's really cool. I don't work with leather but I'm trying to get into sewing so I might make one out of fabric.

      Canvas would be a great option. Maybe just a pair of old carhart pants, plenty of usable fabric there. I would love to see the finished project.

    I just make things out of what I have. I’m gonna make something similar out of pleather, cotton and normal buttons. I might have to add a loop to put the button through but oh well! It will still work.

    Excellent project! I can see Boy Scouts making and using this for hikes in areas where they are allowed to pick up items. They could also start out on a hike with items in the bag, then close up the bag when empty.

    Great video man.n LOTS of little tips are very helpful. I had no idea that you could clip those cap rivets off and use them like that. It's awesome that you winged it but still paid meticulous attention to detail.

I don't have leather but I do have cotton canvas that I plan to treat with mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil then wax it to make it water retaining. Your video has given me the idea as to how to do this. I will show you pictures when completed. Thanks again!

    I've found that with thin stretchy leather a rotary cutter causes the least distortion

    Wonderfulwork! What kind of marker are you using and how do you erase it if need be?

      Thank you, I am using a Tandy leather pen and I can erase it with a standard pencil erasure. The eraser can discolor the leather so it is best to limit the mistakes as much as possible. But during use over time the marks will wear off on their own.

      @@MakersMovementDIY no it’s a double sided glue tape for holding the sewing edges together and I have used it to make a buckskin shirt and chaps and anything else that I punch and sew

      @@MakersMovementDIY Are you allowed to sell your products using the patterns that you purchased? And if yes, can you recommend where I could purchase some decent patterns For anything from wallets to purses bags. I'm not worried about knife sheaths or holsters.

      @@crypto_pinto2660 deiselpunk.ro has some fun and easy patterns at a great price. He asks that if you sell more than ten that you buy the pattern again on the honor system. The real advantage to using his patterns is learning how to make your own. He also has a video for each pattern with detailed assembly instructions. All around that is the best that we have found.

      Figure out what you want to make first. Get the right leather and only the basic tools you need. Add tools as you add experience. Before you know it you will be able to make anything you want. UA-cam is a good resource.

      @@ScottOwens28 there are some links to what we use from Amazon on the newest video. We just shop around and get what we need wherever we find it. As we post projects we will also post links to some of the harder to find stuff that we use. We don't have a single source for anything.

      For real it would but we sew everything leather by hand. Not sure we will ever get a machine.
