Hey everyone! This is a follow up to our original lead trap video. We listened to you guys and put it to the test to see how much lead we’d actually recover. Let me know what you think! If you like the shirts check out bit.ly/ShootFastMerch!
Awesome vid as usual.
I started designing one since seeing the video yesterday. You are AWESOME
Thank You Jerry - that was interesting 🤔
👍
My question is who shot the fender above the tire of the trap?
Jerry's tips for long happy life
1. Share the love
2. Recycle
3. Git some
Most important though... marry and make a good life with your spouse/family!
@@parrisgeorge9708 you a guy or lady ?
Some what
4. Don't breathe in lead dust
Parris George don’t marry...marriage leads to bankruptcy lol
This is what I love about Jerry, he has been doing this forever, he has sponsors and yet he remembers where he came from. Cooking lead to keep running. Thanks Jerry.
thought the same
what car is that?
Unless he's got Trump, Musk And Bezos as sponsors, I'm betting he still reloads plenty to be able to afford the amount of practice I'm sure he does.
As I recall, McGivern would practice a trick shot until he got it right a thousand times in a row. His driveway looked like gold gravel from all the .22 brass just getting to the point where he was ready to try a shot with centerfire ammo.
About 50 years ago I got a new 1911, I wasn't really experienced with the 1911 at that time and all of a sudden I was having extraction problems, later I found the hook on the extractor was partially broken off so I replaced it, not too much later the same thing happened, I think I broke about 4 extractors. I couldn't figure out what was happening, finally one day I read that you shouldn't load one in the chamber and then drop the slide on it, which I had been doing....OOPS! I put a new extractor in it and never had any more extractor problems. I didn't think that would hurt anything but I was wrong, so when Jerry says don't do that, I can personally vouch for what he is saying.
Thanks for this! I never knew that would cause issues with the extractor.
Why i never bothered putting one in the chamber of any weapon. Too much work. Also. I look at it s a safty thing. Rather pop the mag out and extract the 1 round if chambered then put it back at the top of the mag before putting it back. Just easier and safer.
I wonder if this applies for dropping the slide, letting it go into battery under spring tension (the force itself exerting on the extractor) or if you control release the slide (the angle of the extractor in conjunction with the angle of the bullet)
Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Basically I'm wondering if it's the slamming/ shock effect or the angle that the extractor receives the bullet that ultimately causes the wear. I would imagine it's either one or the other and the combo just makes it happen at an increased speed.
Anyone out there know?
@The Reaper I can see dropping the slide on a round in the pipe but not an empty.. idk it should go into battery without a bullet without issue. If it does that seems like a gun flaw.
One in the pipe though I can see that effecting the exstractor
I didn't know that Jerry had cannons for arms. Good Lord.
Well, when you cast your own you're only buying primers and powder. Back then primers were less than a penny and powder was around 7 bucks a pound.
Something has to be used to hold those guns steady lol
Met Jerry once. Got to shake his hand, it was like shaking a bear paw, and my hands are an XL glove size. He's a master for many reasons, but his genetics don't hurt him!
You don't become a sporting legend without the muscle to back it up.
The closest thing to a real life Popeye
Very very wise to be wearing gloves and a respirator when dealing with lead even cutting the grass around where its fired. Iv seen alot of videos of people collecting lead to make their own ammo and they dont appear to do that.
You still get dangerous levels of lead from the shooting fumes.
@Chris Farley honestly that's not that hard to imagine. Lead HAS to be shaved off as the bullet travels through the barrel so I'm sure there's lead in the muzzle blast
DemolitionRanch:
Will a bullet trap stop a 50 BMG.

30 cents a box of 50 is great! The cheapest I’ve ever loaded 38 special is 4 cents a unit..... free cast bullets 3 cent primer and 1 cent of powder..... in 2019
$0.30 in 1973 dollars is $1.74 in 2020 dollars. Your cost for a box of 50 is $2.00. Thus, casting your boolits yields similar cost savings in Jerry's heyday. I gladly pay the premium for the firearm/reloading technology we have today than save the $0.26/box in real dollar savings to "grow up" in Jerry's time. It's still worth it to reload folks!
I agree with that. I reload my 44's since 1986 with my own lead (got 100# of litho-plates from an old printing press). 5,000 rounds has cost me $400 over the past 30+ years. You add in the cost of the reload machine, brass cleaner/shaker, resizer, 44 mold, new brass? About $0.15 per cartridge. Ammo today is about $1.00 a round.
"After I shot a million rounds..." very nonchalantly thrown out there. God bless Jerry!
When Jerry "gets the lead out" he's being literal!
This is one of the things I love about you Jerry. You're so down to earth. You make things as economical as possible through your own ingenuity. I appreciate that very much.
I wonder what Jerry did before shooting? Machinist or tool maker comes to mind. Not every gun nut thinks like he does.
Probably turned the safety off.
just sleep
Probably was in the the womb
Bet he had cap guns as a toddler.
Jerry was called in when Chuck Norris needed a stunt double.
Fun fact. Antimony is the only metal used to make it harder. Tin is added to help the flow in the mold and it does lower the melt point a little at the small percentages that are used in bullet casting.
Thanks for the info on never dropping a round in a 1911 with external extractor, I have a S&W PC 1911, I never dropped one in the barrel and never will now, thanks again.
Jerry still got the muscles 💪💪
"There's no excuse to shoot into a dirty trap." Good ol' Jerry.
Very true. Also don’t shoot into the trap without protection
I love the fact that he offered to let the camera man shoot. Stays humble and keeps everyone included.
The Antimony was added to reduce the lead-poisoning effect from pure lead. It is particularly used in shot-shells for skeet and trap shooting.
For those who can’t afford the trailer, you can make a box with a sloping, 45* angle steel roof, and fill the bottom with a foot or so of sand and sawdust mix to catch the deflected rounds.
You could not be further from correct. Antimony is a heavy metal and is also toxic; the only thing it is used for is to increase the hardness of the lead alloy for the different types of projectiles and prevent excessive deformation.
Bismuth and steel are most definitely used as lead free alternatives for skeet shooting and water fowl hunting that requires using lead free loads
I love the fact that he can fabricate. God willing, this is how i retire.
What, I don’t get it?
Will you drink some duff beer?
Thanks, I’ve been loading my 1911 like that. Did not know it damaged the extractor. 👍🏻
S M can beyond the showdown of a doubt-some higher production pistols have the forward edge beveled to attempt to prevent damage
At 4:00 you finally gave a good answer to the question I've wanted to know forever. I always load my +1 using a magazine. I've been told to just put one in the chamber and drop the slide but never thought it was a good idea. Thanks for giving a good reason.
There's times where I'm just so interested in what Jerry has to say that I forget he's a world-class shooter, then 4:30 happens and I'm blown away again.
Jerry's rap name would be Buck Sixty Nine
Andrew Erickson with a catch phrase of “get some!”
Haha comment of the day... "Buck Sixty N9ne" - says "GET SOME!!!!!!"
Sounds more like a porn star's name than a rappers name!!! Buck sixty nine... Classic...
@@scottkovacs585 Porn Star or rapper... "Get Some" still works hahaha
The genius of this trap in its simple rugged design. Awesome piece of shooting equipment.
Right, more info for the trap!!! Lookin' for the some free scrape plate steel now! Going to be hard nowadays! THNX!
I'm so glad you wear respiratory protection, it's literally the first thing I thought of when I seen the system.
"There's gonna be a LOT of lead dust, I hope he uses protection."
That is my issue with this system. Each shot that comes hits and shatters projectiles that already shattered into stopping plate. Its decent design but to minimize the shattering and dust i would probably go with vertical barrel/tube where projectiles can do circles until loss of energy to drop on the bottom. Of course surrounded with second larger pipe as second layer if first gives in over time. This way there should be less dust and fragmentation. Also spraying some water into trap aint bad idea ether to contain the lead dust, when opening system like his.
Hello Jerry, while your bullet trap is of a good design it does not mitigate the lead dust hazard. You trap is like the one from Savage Snail Range Systems that I used for many years at the Weatherby Rifle shop in Paso Robles, California. The difference in the two is that the Savage Snail trap has an water/oil wetting sprayer in the mouth of the catch basin that eliminates any lead dust. also the bottom of the projectile catch are has an off-set opening below it that allows the bullet fragments to fall into a recovery box. the box has a screened pump that collects the water/oil lube, and sends it back to the top of the trap face were a spray tube discharges it back into the catch basin.
I love how much visible joy shooting brings him after all these years. What a legend!
I love how Jerry is thoroughly enjoying how good he is.
Jerry seems like the kinda guy you'd really like to know. These videos are so helpful
Love that even when you are “playing” you stay in form, are fast, and accurate. No time for bad habits to start creeping in!
I have some private land for a range and man alive I picked up a ton of bits of knowledge. I cannot stress how much I would love to see a playlist of range gear, equipment, practices and tips from Jerry on how he manages his range.
Thanks for your leadership sir! I have enjoyed watching you shoot for more years than I care to admit and loved every minute.
Jerry is the definition of a stud
Not a thing he can't do except miss a target
Who else thought he was going to shoot all 50 rounds in about 10 seconds.
Well to be fair the video is 7:12, if he had done that it would have been under 3 minutes.
This is my bullet trap, full auto sounds, this is how much lead I collected. Credits roll.
only been casting and reloading for a few years but i always looks for ways to scrounge lead. free lead means 38/357 loads for 5/6 cents a piece. Labor is never factored in because i love the whole process - smelting scrap, casting, lube sizing, case prep, loading and most of all SHOOTING.
Always love to watch Jerry shoot and listen to what he has to say
I've watched about every video he has put out, he still amazes me how fast he can shoot! Mr. Jerry turns a semi into a full auto!
“Unless you just don’t like your gun” 😂😂
Even slow, Jerry is like a machine gun.
TTiger 8626 his trigger finger is as close as it gets to requiring full auto registration
Robber breaks into Jerry's house:
Jerry: Here we gooo.
He'd probably say.... you come to "Git sum"?
Congratulations from Brazil!!!! You're the best!!!
I didn’t think you were the one shooting the dents in the fenders but when I saw them it made me laugh. I graduated high school in 1972 too. Back then a lot of Smith & Wesson revolvers came in nice wood presentation boxes. Most N frames did if I remember correctly. I have 8⅜“ 629 with a quick change front sight. The blades are calibrated for 50,100,150 and 200-meters. The system required using a 240-grain bullet loaded to 1350-fps and remarkably they work perfect. Smith made numerous unique models long forgotten. There were a lot of guns made for PPC matches that shot one ragged hole all day long with 148 gr wadcutters. Remember the Smith & Wesson Model 53 22 Remington Jet Magnum Revolver. Some Smith & Wesson revolvers didn’t pan out to well.
Imagine breaking into some grandpas house and he just unloads a whole clip in your chest in less than 5 seconds
Shit looks like less than 3 seconds lol

Jerry is incredible fast and effective with the shooting AND the teaching.
This guy is a true artist love his videos. Some of the things this man can do are unreal.
Jerry is the level of self sufficiency I aspire to.
Even the greatest shooter on earth knows about ballin' on a budget.
I'd say when someone is one of the greatest, they probably were balling on a budget at some point because they spent every dollar they could to get better.
Given the thousands of rounds a month Jerry required to hone his edge as a competitive shooter, reloading with cast bullets is the way to stay on target.
Great design on the trap, the catchment pipe is fantastic.
Thank you for another video. Looks like a Great day Sunshine, gun range and recycling.
My grand father knew Jim Clark sr well. I have a bunch of his 1911's. All with Jim Clarks stamp inside them.
Jerry, I also, ironically, worked with your brother in clville. If you are ever in town visiting, I'd love to let you see my grandpas collection of Jims guns.
Jerry has to be the worlds best shooter in multiple categories. His knowledge his skill and his willingness to share his inventions and skill sets with the 2a community is unmatched
Nice to see folk not polluting the environment. Nice one Jerry
3:46 well better late than never to find that tidbit out lol Thanks Jerry! I'll stop doing that then.
.38 cents a box!!! Damn. I wish it were like that today.
im loading 357 brass to 38 spl cast loads for about 3 bucks a box
@@bcouri1 how long did it take you to breakeven?
@@arequina depends on how much you shoot
👍 you're one of my heros Jerry! You never miss on target or a safety tip.
the deflection plate angle at a range may be listed as 12 degrees so for a silhouette target
make 2 steel triangles 56 inch "tall" with a 24 inch wide "base" for the top & bottom &
make 2 steel trapezoids 56 inch "tall" with a 45 inch base & 21inch "top" for the sides
to make a 5 foot-ish funnel that you weld the small end into a 2 inch slit in a 6 inch pipe
The guy is not human, he's a machine. No body (well, except Jerry) is that fast, and on target.
Would of loved to see him competing against Arvo Ojala, Elmer Keith and Ed McGivern at their respective primes.
Thanks for sharing. Was hoping you would do more about it. 👍
My grandfather and I used to go up to the gun range and when the range clear we would grab a couple handfulls of bullets out of the sand berm behind the targets each time we would check aforementioned targets. And he taught me at a young-ish age how to smelt lead in a lee melting pot and cast new bullets and reload spent brass.
This man never stops impressing me
It was like that .45 had a spring and a stop on the muzzle that pulled it down and reset in the same spot every shot, MR. Jerry has some
Johnathan Storm it does, it’s called cromagnon grip from Popeyes forearms
This is a real man
Brings a whole new meaning to get the lead out.
I’m enjoying your series on reloading.
That was an informative little gem that I did not expect.
Those 4 dislikes are people of the 1% that don’t have to check their bank account before buying ammo.
Nope guns are bad deathvto america
@@Cortesevasive your logic doesnt check out how do you want to bring death to America WITHOUT guns?
@@BR4INlessBRI4N gotta love the logic of some people "its the guns that are bad" its not like some guy not long ago rented a truck and killed over 50 people its all good trucks a fine they can't commit mass murder. gun laws work its not like here in Australia there was over 2000 gun crimes in my state alone yea our gun laws sure work well so well in fact one of my family friends sure didn't get killed by here own son with a gun because our gun laws work.
i hope Canada sort out there government before they end up like us down here in Australia
You also have some people that are genuinely against recycling or doing anything proactive to improve your health or prevent lead poisoning.
@@BR4INlessBRI4N dude coronavirus will end america if were not careful
Great idea in recovering the lead so it won't get into the environment. It can be melted over and over for more shooting fun, reducing the cost of reloads. I hope more shooters start doing this, bc one day we may have to use all lead free ammo, unless we become proactive on this issue. Tks for the video.
Well I learned a few things. Love the collection tube on teh back of the trap. Knowing my friends, I would have added a swinging armor plate over the rear of the tires just for such an occurrence...
*awesome just awesome, Keep on Keepin On Jerry, we all love yah*
If you can seal the end caps on the tube and add a fill port you can fill the pipe with water and eliminate the lead dust.
Love the mention of Jim Clark Sr. I do well remember Clark Pin Guns. I'm sure that Kay serves as a daily reminder of (I think) her dad. Get some!
I need to make one of these in my living room!

What a good idea 10/10 for the innovation
Nice security precautions - much appreciated (ear plugs + ear protection, dust mask, hand gloves, flagging the gun - that's responsible shooting).
A man of many talents I see.
Thats awesome you mentioned about the lead. Maybe make a video into the constant exposure to lead, leading to lead poisonings from shooting.
Very cool invention, Jerry!

Me: Take your time Jerry. You don't have to shoot so fast. We got all day.
Jerry: I am taking my time.

Thanks for sharing the drill. Would Lena mind sharing what gear she had installed on her belt during this video? The holster, magazine holster, and shot timer are pretty self explanatory. Then there's a dump pouch? But the two that intrigue me the most, the large and the small black & white objects, attached to the back of the belt have me mystified. Would the bigger one be a cleaning rod kit? First aid?
Love the 1911 you have great control.
I never achieved that kind of control .
What a boss, thanks Jerry. New fabricating project.
I like your cover design for the collector pipe.

Your recent content is GOLD!!
Definitely something here manufacturers and users need to pay attention to.
Even something like an airgun pellet trap.
I have one I was shooting with a low powered pellet pistol and the pellets were often going straight to the back plate and even being well under the limits for this pellet trap it was destroyed in no time.
The steel would have been stronger enough if only it had been designed properly.
I built a trap like that a couple years ago. made mine out of 1/2" steel plate and the tube in the back is vertical with an open end at the bottom that I put a bucket under. When I shoot into it the lead just falls out the tube into the bucket. I've shot up to a .44 handgun into it and up to .223 out of my AR. Also shot my 45/70 into it with hand casted lead bullets but not any jacketed high velocity large caliber stuff .
Thanks Jerry
