    Brandon, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for having this channel. Thankfully because of you and my hard work and consistency I reached my goal of passing the teas test.. & a big thanks to you because your the reason I learned the material for math.. I watched your whole teas test playlist over and over and over.. and the results showed... My math test score from the previous time I took the test was a 53.1 and today I got a 84.4 on math.. I could not be more happy because math is my weakness and I proved to myself you can do anything you set yourself to. Thank you once again! Your the real MVP !!!!

    Hey, your videos are amazing! I'm having trouble figuring out when to use a porportion vs make an equation when doing word problems. Any ideas on how I can remember?

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  6 років тому +6

      Hey there! One good indicator that a proportion needs to be used is when you are trying to convert one thing to another. Example: feet to inches.... pounds to kilograms.... etc. If some type of conversion factor exists (12in = 1ft.... 2.2pounds = 1kg....), then a proportion may be your best plan of attack.

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  2 роки тому

      Perhaps the part of solving systems of equations is causing this issue. It is hard for me to pinpoint the problem if I cannot see your work. If it is systems of equations, I have an entire playlist on solving those, and this is what is needed to solve your problem after you have the equations set up. Hopefully you can help me w/this problem I'm using the Teas Prep-Pocket and I 'm stuck- First Taxi charges a flat rate of $2.25 plus $0.60 per mile. Linda has to spend less than $13, how many miles can she travel w/o going over her budget?- Now I'm not sure if I'm using the proportion right because everytime I set the problem up my numbers are large instead of whole number or single numbers.. I crossed multiplied by making x as miles and none of my answers are correct... then I added $ 2.25 w/ $0.60 ...I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong thanks

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  6 років тому +5

      I would try the work backwards approach. You know that Linda has 13 dollars. Automatically she has to pay the flat rate of $2.25. So.... $13.00 - $2.25 = $10.75
      Therefore, she has $10.75 left over which she can use to pay for the mileage. Since each mile costs 60 cents ($.60) we can take the $10.75 and divide it by $.60 to figure out how many miles she can go..... which gives us approximately 17.9 miles.

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  5 років тому

      It could be 12.99 or it could be anything less than $13. So $5.33 would work... Anything less than 13.

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  5 років тому

      @Young Dende I wasn't referring to the exact question as the original comment. In general though. Think about it like this. If I say I have less than $13.00 in my wallet, is it possible for me to have $5.99? Yes, because that is less than $13.00. Is it possible for me to have $14.00 in my wallet. No, since I said I have less than $13.00. How's that?

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  3 роки тому +1

      Be careful... on the problem I said 0.62mi = 1km (not 1 mi = .62km)... Hope that helps. :)

  • @adapacheco4022

    Brandon what is the easiest way to finding this problem out..
    Robert is planning to drive 1,800 miles on a cross-country trip. If his car gets 30 miles to the gallon, and his tank holds 12 gallons of gas, how many tanks of gas will he need to complete the trip?
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  6 років тому

      I would first figure out how many gallons of gas it will take Robert to drive the whole trip. 1800 miles divided by 30 mpg = 60 gallons of gas for the whole trip. Since one tank holds 12 gallons, 60 gallons of gas divided by 12 gallons per tank equals 5 tanks of gas. Final answer.... 5 tanks of gas. How's that?

    • @bcraftmath

      Typically when any two things are getting compared, boys to girls, feet to inches, chocolate candies to fruit candies, miles and gallons.... any two things.... a proportion can likely be the method needed to solve.

    See the problem is with word problems with me how do I figure out rather I multiply or divide fast. Cause you know it’s timed n sometimes I have blind moments. I need to know what to do off top I be nervous n get dumb. You know what I mean?

    • @bcraftmath
      @bcraftmath  6 років тому

      I do understand what you are saying. Learning how to set up proportions correctly (and solve them) will prevent you from making the multiply vs. divide mistake. With practice, you can read a word problem, set up a proportion and solve it in about 30 seconds. Practice is key. Try googling "proportions worksheet with answer". You can find many worksheets with JUST proportions, try them all out, checking each answer and with repetition of this concept, you will soon see a pattern and ways that you can solve them quickly.
