Guitar Donation and Interview
Feat. Valerie Bertinelli
Interview is of lower video quality, looking for an upgrade
Now that he's gone that infectious, mischievous smile has become poignant, too. RIP Ed.
I know there’s so much talent to argue, but I’ve truly never heard anyone play guitar like Ed.
Eruption still blows my mind every single listen.
RIP EVH ❤️🔥🤘🏼
For a while at least, it must've been ridiculously awesome, both Eddie, AND Valerie became "famous" at almost the same time. The late 70s are America's peak, and will never again be duplicated. Music , of all genres, was absolutely great.
I can’t get enough of these interviews with Eddie. It’s kinda wild to see the different stages of who he was and is as a person.
Yeah but- he's still an asshole for how he handled the Mikey thing
Rst28 he’s definitely an egomaniac, for sure. It becomes more evident over the years. Mike is one of the nicest, most down to earth people ever.
Probably a little more than that.
I can see he wanted to play with Pugsley, I mean his kid- cool.
But- the way handled it?
Then talk bullshit about Mike?
C'mon man..
That said- Yeah both Mike and Sam are exactly what you see.
This from a mutual friend..
Rst28 Mikey quit.
It’s ok
On which planet?
I feel better about life every time I hear this guy.
That's sad
@@Frankincensedjb123 maybe. But that's how Eddie is for a lot of us guys.
@@bgaonawhat do you mean?
@brittneyking4284 I mean, here's a guy whose playing and imagination felt nearly supernatural and changed the whole rock genre in a big way, and listening to him talk feels almost like a caricature of suburban casual-as regular a guy as can be. You can't help but think "ehh, don't worry," kinda like his music. That's a pretty helpful point of view that's easy to forget.
I always thought Eddie and Val were great together, very harmonious and happy,.. then heart breaking when it ended
Read her book. They weren't so happy.
@@jacsig I know I did too and I didn't like the part with him being gone a lot because he's a rockstar on the road but as everybody knows there's such thing as groupies and he was having girls flown in and she was heartbroken and torn up about the fact that she had a one night stand and I just thought really because compared to all he did but I still love him and when it was Van Halen and I love her
She had to leave him when he had half of his tongue cut out due to cancer and he still refused to stop smoking cigarettes.
she ruined it all and she was bossy...you can see it here.
My heart is broken. RIP I will always love you. Rock on Eddie rock on 🤘🎸🎸🎸❤️
It's 2024 and still missing you Eddie!❤🎸❤🕯🥀
Eddie Van Halen's guitar the Frankenstrat is a gorgeous guitar and instantly recognizable. Eddie Van Halen changed the world on how guitar players would play the guitar after Van Halen's self titled debut album came out back in 1978. Eddie has his own signature sound, and in my opinion no other guitar player can imitate his guitar playing. Many have tried, but they have failed.
So kind and pleasant person was Ed. Nice Interview!
Compare his voice here to his voice now and you get an excellent anti smoking ad.
The guy had part of his tongue removed due to cancer, not smoke related ...
He is smoking here. Besides voice tone does lower over time.
Will Castillo E but smoking caused it...
Not smoking related? Geez! Must have been his plastic pick he put in his mouth, bcse smoking is soooooo not going to cause mouth cancer? ...Like the other 100% of victims that smoked that got mouth cancer.
He said he got cancer because he used to put a METAL pick in his mouth all the time ...
Never realized how socially anxious EVH was. That edginess helps makes his music legendary though.
Yeah, he’s said in interviews before that’s why he’d drink before interviews and shows, to take some of the edge off. I’m glad he was able to get clean for himself and his family during his last years. Rest in power King Edward!
Wtf no, dude was extroverty made person
@@kikepistolas5878 Nope, deep down he was shy & insecure, as many brilliant artists are. He had a ton of stage fright. When he was 12 yrs old, his dad gave him a cig & a shot of vodka to get rid of his nerves. It worked! And thus began a tragic future for Ed & substance abuse. He was sober for the 1st 12 yrs of his life, and thank God, the last 12. He finally conquered his demons & gave himself an amazing gift! RIP EVH 💗🎶
@@coldwinter5710 There is a picture of him with Tony Iommi on Tony's Instagram page backstage after one of the 2015 concert shows. Eddie is holding a beer bottle in his hand, so maybe he started drinking again.
@@jacsig No Way...he was sober until the end. Lots of beverages now come in bottles that look exactly the same as a beer bottle.
That’s my man. RIP Eddie. You are greatly missed.
now i wanna go to the Hard Rock Cafe so badly. I miss Eddie so much.
RIP Eddie. You were epic man
Valerie is almost like a manager here...she answers all the questions with Ed, knows everything that's going on...wife/manager.
Manly witch handler
He looks so young!
And really feminine
1:33... 3rd fret to 9th fret stretch. dang.
MrThirteenteen I was thinking the same thing!
I can get there but there’s no way I can do anything lol.
He’s got a weird looking pinky finger, no doubt about it. I first noticed it when looking at his hand print in the rock walk of fame.
Human's Being solo tapping part, he use that very same stretch 11 years later in a song. I almost broke my hand attempting that. Now I use it for warm up :)
I love this vid, and I love Eddie, thanks for posting!💪🤘
Got to see that guitar there in 1994. It's now at another location.
They should have left it there
It’s amazing she stuck with him as long as she did
It was becuz she loved him.
Ed and Val were so great together - "I always kinda liked Mammoth" - lol - epic
I love it - a car can be romantic!
RIP Eddie. Fly high. You have some people to jam with finally. Will miss you forever.
Great stuff!
You are missed,..RIP♥️🙏💔
Great music
Really raw footage
Who would have thunk a couple months later the best version of van halen was about to be unleashed bringing the 1st #1 album & the best of van halen
Yeah!
To bad dlr album eat em and smile came out and showed what 5150 should have been.vh lost a lot of fans in 86 and realized it to
You can see that Valerie was totally into him back then. They were a cute couple. Vale Eddie Van Halen
I think thats how all relationships start off. Then they end up in the trash can.
Valerie Bertinelli was all over that. I don’t blame her.
I saw a picture of an old newspaper clipping from 1981 on SM earlier and it said that Valerie got death threats after she married Eddie. Is that true?
@@jacsig Could be true. I wouldn't doubt it. Jealous fans.
@@MeeMee-gz5vp If it is true, that's messed up.
Knowing this was before the split with DLR was known to the public!
Interesting, never would have thought Rudy Liren's friends came up with the idea of an EVH guitar hanging in a Hard Rock... I love this guy - they pepper him with the same fucking questions so he looks at Val and says "oh God, get me outta here"... The last fucking place he wants to be !! Beautiful !!! King Edward was the best to ever do it and he was taken away too early... Such a cool guy. May he always RIP...
Wow this is from such a rare time in the band, post Dave pre Sammy, fantastic find!
I give her credit for being able to leave him. he's so awesome, but at the same time, it's hard to stick around when someone you love won't stop their bad habits. Times have definitely changed. I enjoy watching old interviews of Musicians. it was such a different time compared to now. Long Live Eddie.
Yeah, especially with how we understand addiction too. Different times they might not have divorced, or he may have gotten cleaner earlier.
This was recorded in the 30 seconds between Dave releasing his solo EP and being fired from VH. He and Valerie actually commented on it "being a good thing" that Dave was keeping the name out there?! He then denied a break up when asked about the rumors. Crazy times.
He denied it in a legendary Guitar World interview in July 1985. The last question was this: GUITAR WORLD: I just have a feeling that when we next hear Van Halen, they won't be..... EVH: The same? Maybe you're right. I guess we'll all have to wait around and wait and see what that difference will be. I do not really know.. It's definitely time to move on...." In the next Guitar World interview with EVH, Guitar World said that Ed knew AT THAT TIME that Roth was gone. He hid it the whole interview. Crazy.
No, Dave did not tell Eddie he was leaving until April 85.
Matt Smith is correct, in the Guitar World July 85 interview, DLR had effectively quit by then.
Dave was not fired...he left. The reason he got mad after leaving is because they replaced him with another singer and kept the name. He thought they were going to do separate projects and they could come back to Van Halen one day. Instead Van Halen continued without him...and they said they were happier. That ticked him off. But, you can’t leave to be a solo artist AND be mad they didn’t fall apart like you thought they would.
@@MattSmith-iq1ld Eddie says in the interview that they were working on album 7
Dave quit, he wasn't fired. Eddie has always maintained he quit
He couldn't keep that bottle away from his mouth could he. I actually know the feeling myself. I've struggled with it half my life. Beer can be a man's best friend, but because it eventually catches up to you mentally or physically, it can also start to be your worst enemy.
ShadowⓋ That’s why I quit drinking it’s tough for me been in a family reunion and not to have one and everybody are drinking but memories came to my mind and I say: no that liquid fucked half of my life so I pass.
Alcohol is one of the worst drugs ever..almost ruined my life several times. Now I smoke weed, only in the evening though.
lyradguitar I did everything in my youth but especially weed don’t let me to think straight.thats why I’m sober from everything.
I really like to smoke some good hydroponic weed occasionally, but I could never do it every day - or even every month for that matter, since it has always had the tendency to mess with my memory ability as a musician. Sadly, I notice it right away because I get too many brain farts or 'blank spots' , especially when some of the stuff can get quite complicated, so if I smoked it all the time, I'd probably eventually go insane . No thanks..
I was actually surprised of how slow he was drinking for a rock star on cocaine
Ahh, the eighties, when you could actually smoke when you're enjoying a drink.
They were such a cute couple!
I still remember my 1966 ford. Rock down 2 street over the Eagle, alaska. On the alaska highway.
It's a shame he never recorded those solo records he mentioned. He left a lot great music off tape that we will never hear. Even he will never hear those ideas again, time is unkind.
John Doe there’s some stuff out there, just not for sale: donut city, act like it hurts etc
Well said....
actually he did some instrumentals for the movie the Wild Life, it was a low budget film & didn't go anywhere BUT thats the closest to a solo Album,
Also Ed has mentioned that if he ever did one he would have Alex play Drums on it so what would be the point Since we are already in a band called Van Halen.
( that's what Eddie said )
Dam he looked so you and they already had alot of years of hard rock partying man I miss all of it VH forever
cool
Dam . So young. RIP
He looks like Marty from Back To The Future
♥️🙏🏻🎸
Cool.
Hey Steve!
Johnny Beane is in the house!! Get Rockin'!!!!!!!
Restringing a floyd rose while watching this. Fun times
Geetar I saw you play guitar. Really really bad. You might want to practice for a few years before posting a vid. I guess you need validation and attention.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wanna know where you can buy that jacket
Thats the MTV Lost Weekend with Van Halen Contest jacket from I think 84?
I don’t hate Valerie but it seems in this clip that she is helping answer Eddie’s questions when he doesn’t need her help, as if she is being interviewed herself when it’s clearly about Eddie. Yoko did the exact same thing to John’s interviews. Am I wrong here?
Well, Eddie never liked giving interviews. He's never done many. He's obviously nervous. Look at the way he keeps reaching for the bottle (I know he's an alcoholic, but still).
Yeah. That’s why he elbows her at 5:12 as if to say “Shut up” 😂
He hated doing interviews and Valerie knows it.
He was obliterated, I think she was trying to keep it going smoothly
@@IslaSkye123 that's so sad..
GREAT FREAKN GUY R.I.P KING EDWARD
He looks so young seems to be in high school kid talking about to be a rockstar..
Wow, right before Sammy
They loved each other sooo much it’s hard to live with an alcoholic.
That's the Hard Rock Cafè located in NYC?
Valerie was hot!...sorry Wolfie 😂😂😂
She still is!
I'm 53 so needless to say I was in love with Valerie. The old One Day at Time. I had all the Van Halen albums so I remember those days. Look at how she is always looking at him. I think they were in love but people change and shit happens.
David Digital alcohol and cocaine fucked the relationship.. Valerie was exhausted to endure the Eddie ‘s behavior and parties.
Jorge Fox Yeah, I think the Blow messed them both up. They were really young too and you know at that age you just care about sex but they grew older and figured out they weren't meant for each other. They seem to still be tight friends to this day which is cool
@@daviddigital6887 They were meant for each other thats why they stayed friends till the end. She was there when he died. Don't know that many exes would be and she certainly wouldn't have been there unless Eddie wanted her there.
@5:07 she says something she wasn't supposed to.
I'm completely new to Van Halen. What did she say that was bad?
What did she say???
They can't publicly admit Dave was involved in writing because he'd then be owed lifetime publishing royalties.
@@benhove6542 Sammy stole those publishing royalties from Dave.
Just imagine if they had continued on ... sad.
incredible. the guy was too young to even know what he was doing. that is what is great about such artists. here it is 2018 and he is till one to contend with.....if not considered the best.....but it faded fast......
well he was 30, and Classic Van Halen had just released six total albums by that time....so he was not that young.
Great video. Eddie Van Heineken is all coked up haha
Brian Jones’s Vox teardrop guitar on the wall behind them.
In retrospect, I can’t tell if EVH is anxious with Valerie being right there, and responding to EVH interview questions.
She almost feels a little bit forced and intrusive on the timing of her vocalizing or giggling.
It’s got to be very very hard being married to a rockstar.
Eddie played music for nearly 50 years, he was the best guitarist to ever live, he married his first wife in his prime when he could have had any girl he wanted and was with her for 20 years he was just a real person a genuinely nice guy! Being a rich rock star for so many years yet never had some big scandal like most celebrities do! When I hear him talk I think man he’s no normal it’s like he could me my dad just a nice normal caring guy. Idk it’s just so weird to me to see a guy of his status being such a great normal guy without a big rockstar ego like gene Simmons for instance. I mean fuck look at the clothes he wears you wouldn’t even know he was a rockstar. Rip Eddie!
That’s why we love the guy
@@jordanroberts975 absolutely!
He didn't build it, he slapped together parts. Brian May literally built the Red Special from the bottom up.
I couldn’t make out what they were talking about I Wonder if this is before they got with Sammy or not
Looks like this was just as Dave's fist solo EP was taking off, and subsequently the time he was exiting the band. Sammy came on board and they did 5150.
This was in Feb of '85 and Sammy joined in Sept. of '85. It was pretty obvious that Roth was going his own way in this interview, though.....you could tell by the facial expressions alone.
Eddie was always such a nervous reck and Valerie’s that nervous fake laugh...
Yep. He was tired of her already.
You all are jealous ass haters! He's not even in the ground yet! He loved her, and she still loves him, STFU about what you DON'T know. No marriage is perfect! STFU!
No one said perfect. He cheated on her with hundreds of women. That's not love
@@TheJpep2424 he didn’t cheat with hundreds of women, he spent most of his free time writing music or working on new riffs. He was a workaholic and used coke and booze for creativity.
@@TheJpep2424 They both cheated! Did you live with them? Did you know them personally? Val was there when took his last breath, they both came to each other's wedding, that's love right there, STFU!!!!!! I didn't SAY you did say it was perfect, STFU about what you DON'T know.
Is this guitar still in HRC in NY today???
It sounded as if David was still in VH at the time of this interview.
Is that the guitar he donated? i thought the kramer neptune guitar was at the hard rock cafe
This was the beginning (believe it or not) of ELVH
1:40...did he ever release those solo albums..???
No but there are at least 2 albums worth according to Eddie several years ago at 5150. I hope they release it someday. I’d preorder if it was available.
They were just kids when they met….. so young
they were a cute couple
Proving that he had no idea they was leaving the band.
Marty McFly is that you?
1:27 "You can only go so far, like that..."
*Casually stretches from the 3rd to the 9th fret like a boss*
Me: 😳
Great explanation by Ed. Played like he had 3 hands. Sure miss him.
Dave had an ego but building the studio at his house was a big power move by Ed. They were all going to sunset before that and now everything was done at Ed’s house where he had control
Sure looks like the Hot For Teacher video Kramer that he donated to HRC.
Brian Jones guitar
He looks like old school John Cusack here
Isnt he sweet
He never should have married Valerie. Just dated her and moved on. I don’t even think he was attracted to her at this point. Maybe because she acted like his mother? Read her book! He wasn’t interested in her anymore. That’s why she cheated in 1985 not long after this interview. She just wanted affection.
She had the affair because she thought Ed had something going on with Patti Smyth and kept comparing her hair, etc. to Patti - which turned out to be false, they were just great friends. Ed was championing Patti to be lead singer after DLR left. Valerie was only 24. They had their ups and downs like most young married couples.
@@charlizewinslow5284 Only according to Patti it was false. She said she & Eddie were just good friends, that may have been a lie.
B Kinder he was interested enough to get her pregnant in 1986, then she had a miscarriage, and then again in 1990, when she got pregnant with Wolfie.
@@charlizewinslow5284 And as I said before Patty Smyth might have been lying when she said she & Ed were just friends.
@@charlizewinslow5284 And she had the affair becuz she didn't feel loved. As she said in her book.

5:12..elbows his handler to stfu
You have no idea what it was like. What you see on camera and off can be of polar opposites.

@@Debora1Valerie met and started dating the new husband in 2004. According to Sammy Hager’s book, Eddie was walking around drinking cheap wine out of a bottle, he couldn’t remember his guitar solos or the songs at all during the 2004 VH tour. Just go watch the 2004 -2006 videos, he was a total mess. Wolfie and Al made him to go to rehab in 2007.
She saved his life.
I can already see early signs of drug abuse as he is starting to look older than he is.
He was in his mid twentys at most here and he looks more like 35.

Eddie was born in 1955, so he was thirty here.
ScarredRomeo correct
ScarredRomeo Well ok, then he looks 45. Happy Now?
I wasn't trying to be an ass or put you in your place or something like that. I just wanted to state the facts.
