Some auto parts or auto paint stores can put automotive colors in spray cans. You need the color code for the vehicle. A can usually costs about $15. Great video for those of us who are not professionals.
Just a heads up for you DIY'ers do NOT wet sand body filler! Although it does make it very smooth, body filler absorbs moisture which will literally make that patch worse then it's original state and the body filler will crack over time. Best to fiberglass filler if you need to wet sand as it is waterproof when cured. Also before laying your first coat of bondo or whatever and AFTER whipping the panel with brake cleaner. Spray self etching primer it will help prevent panel oxidizer ion aswell as show you the high and low spots on the panel aswell as aiding in the initial stick of the body filler
I clearly dont understand the comments of this project. Yes it isnt a proffesional job, and maybe yes, it'll come back in a couple years. BUT first off. if you're such a pro... then why are you looking at this video or any similar video to start with? This job proffesionally would cost about $800 depending in what state. But for about $80 to last roughly 2 years or so, this isnt bad at all. Thanks for the video man. i'll deffinately try it. it may not be perfect and paint wont match 100% But you have to look at it to notice it. And THAT's an improvement right there!
because it says rust repair I did not see any thing getting repair I see a guy covering up rust that will come back because he did not use and proper methods
One thing you would want to do is use a primer on the Bondo then do your wet sand this will allow for a better finish on the paint end. Good video though especially for a first DIY auto body job
Thanks for the DYI, this is exactly what I'm looking to do on my son's new/used 1997 Toyota Camry with about this much rust! Perfect for mom to do on her own! It will get us buy the time we need it to look a little better!
thanks for the great info video. planning to tackle the numerous nightmare rust spots i have on my van when i get the time. tried fixing rust patches before and they come back.
This is why I'm saving up for a new truck (meaning at a minimum of 3 years old). My plan is to rhino-line the wheel wells and around the edges of the body. The bumpers will be totally covered. But for now, this video was awesome. The body shops always say how complicated this is. But it really isn't that bad. Where did you get the matched paint?
Thanks for the video! I'm going to I have a 2002 F150 with a bit of rust, but wasn't sure what to do. Like you said, it's not perfect, but it doesn't stand out like a rust bucket either.
It would be helpful to know from others what might have been done incorrectly, why, and a better alternative and why. I understand no one likes criticism, but the true goal is to help others, and you never know what knowledge you can gain from others.
1998 and on was Notorious for the rear cab lower rocker door to rust. Reason is the drain hole's are improperly positioned. Tip drill you a couple of hole's underneath sand prime and paint them. It will work and prolong your bodywork. Happy painting
Thank you! My car is 75 Chevy Nova Custom. İt's have a too much rust on it. I'm gonna do what you did , but i will not paint it. I will just wrap it. What do you think about wrapping after sanding? Thanks again!
Since you don't want to weld, next time you should spray the remaining rusty area with Eastwood's rust encapsulator and then use long strand fiberglass filler on top. That cheap filler you used won't keep the water out
to all the viewers of this video... you have to get the rust fully off (as this guy didnt, there were two brown spots left clearly seen by the eye)... if the rust isnt removed 100% then it will expand.. ohh... and when youre putting on the coats with the iron thing your making skratches all over the paint of the car... use something made out off softer plastic material.
Do not sand filler with wet sanding paper, or other abrasive. Wet sanding is for primer coat. For better result, spray a little black color, from a distance, on filler before sanding. That will help you to get perfectly flat area, because, until black color is there, area is not flat. Also, u can use rust converter, after you finish grinding of rust. That thing are awesome!
if your going this route, then alteast spray a decent rust converter, and then instead of body filler, use a fiberglass type filler. body filler will just attract moisture causing more rust while the fiberglass type is water resistant and shouldn't bubble if repair is small.
Whatever is easier. Most people don't have the skills or tools to patch up rust. Just applying filler like in this video is only a temporary patch. The metal will continue to rust underneath the filler.
i have several nasty brown rust patches on my truck, and if this method can buy me several months of not looking at rust, it's worth $50 and a day of work. what do you want for $50 bucks?
Cause for concern is the rust on the inside. For cancer it is advisable to cut it out. The plastic exposed on the other side of those holes will drawn moisture leading to further corrosion. Feather edging with an orbital sander 1000+ is important before applying plastic filler.
Thanks for your comment. The truck is my second vehicle, so I am not too worried about the rust coming back. That is the first time I attempted body work on any vehicle. I don't have the money, knowledge, type of welder, or steel to weld in new steel. I will keep my eye on it. It sounds like I may get a second shot to get it right:)
Well i done one of my pre war cars after i ground it back i put on a coat of rust neutralizer it then went black, then i went over it with solder been on there for 7 years now and hasn't even looked to bubble or anything
THATS A BLOODY GOOD JOB FOR A BLOKE THAT SAID ITS NOT THE BEST.. THATS A PRO JOB 100% IF HE WANTED TO Make it extra special i supoose putting another hour into it would be good.. but good job ANYWAY
Smart....Well done. I like how you explained to the goof balls that may comment you basically said look.... I'm not a 100% but I know what I'm doing please don't drop me Negative comments. Like I said job well done!!!🏆
dooman42 They ALL do. It's a bad design, but I like Ford trucks (uhhhh the older ones, but they just rusted in other areas) I never wore one out though.
It doesn't take much extra effort to spray some rust encapsulator on the area before bogging. That'll stop the rust re-appearing anytime soon. Rust will re-appear real quick on this guy's job.
I strongly urge anyone who's considering rust removal to buy a proper air painter if they have an air compressor, as you see getting your paint matched is a big part of any DIY job and you shouldn't cheap out on paint unless it's an old vehicle you really don't care that much about. If you dont get it professionally matched, it's going to look like this job. Unless your paint job is a tri-coat pearl of some sort, they should be able to mix up something a lot closer so it's not noticeable.
Bog is not the way to go :P It will last you for a short ammount of time... I would sugest you go ahead and cut out the whole piece out (where the rust is) and maybe fill it in with fibre glass to keep it nice, cheap and easy :D
More then likely that rust is rusting from the back out. You really need to cut it out, the repair may last for a year if your at least until you can see it again but the rust is still happening.
Im no car expert apart from my own experience but you should really put some rust treatment on that. Also your filler was too sloppy and you should use a flexible spreader.
I used to do repairs this way when I was a teen & early 20s. this is definitely the wrong way! cut it out, weld new metal in, then fill & block sand. Etch prime, filler prime block again & paint.
Of course, *** someone *** with enough time, money and skill could repair the Mustang. As far as cars go, it is possible to repair or rebuild almost any car, given enough skill, time, effort and money. But you have to decide, is this car worth all the time, effort and money? And do I have the skill, or do I want to pay someone who does have the skill? And there are ** jillions ** of reproduction Mustang parts, but they are also on the expensive side. Cali, do you want to spend the next 2 or 3 years worth of weekends working on that Mustang?
For one thing, NEVER apply bondo over holes because the finish you apply later on won't last and you'll wind up having to repair it again. I'm by far not a professional auto body guy and I even know that.
Good video! You need to practice better safety precautions though. Angle grinders are very dangerous tools, and the use of gloves and a face shield should always be mandatory while using them.
There's nothing wrong with doing this on a truck or daily driver so I don't know why everyone is ripping him a new one.. YES the best thing to do is to cut out the old metal and weld in a new piece and shape it when it comes down to it. This is a cost effective way to at least get it to a sprayable before product where a body shop can primer, fix minor imperfections and spray new base and clear. A little tip would be to use POR-15 on the backsides of these bottom fenders and wheel wells because they have a tendency to rust.
+Frank Albano He left rust on there. He didn't even grind it all out. That rust will just keep spreading and waste everything he just did. That wasn't a rust repair job, it was a rust cover-up job.
Yet another great video about taking the easy way out and hiding rust under bondo until next year.
I think it's awesome you do these videos. They have enabled me to learn how to make some of my own repairs. Thanks again and keep the videos coming.
Some auto parts or auto paint stores can put automotive colors in spray cans. You need the color code for the vehicle. A can usually costs about $15. Great video for those of us who are not professionals.

Kudos for adding onto the post to help everyone even further, without being a dick. Thank u!

One F, man. Just one F in professional.
This sounds like an educated and well researched point, and is not biased one bit. Excellent post, keep up the good work champ.
He clearly said it's not perfect why are so many people trying to make it that way it's a quick fix for us broke non pros
because it says rust repair I did not see any thing getting repair I see a guy covering up rust that will come back because he did not use and proper methods
+tugperreira another BOR job
tugperreira I did this and it lasted almost ten years so fuck off
One thing you would want to do is use a primer on the Bondo then do your wet sand this will allow for a better finish on the paint end. Good video though especially for a first DIY auto body job
Ahh the good old days. Used to do this when I was a kid. Didn't last long but was quick and easy.
U did a great job , thx for taking ur time to show us how to fix the rust in our vehicles
Thanks for the DYI, this is exactly what I'm looking to do on my son's new/used 1997 Toyota Camry with about this much rust! Perfect for mom to do on her own! It will get us buy the time we need it to look a little better!
Thanks so much you saved me a couple bucks on my classic 1963 Corvette stingray, Life saver!!!
Thanks for the knowledge man! Don't pay attention to the haters. They're just mad that they didn't have the discipline to make a video.
thanks for the great info video. planning to tackle the numerous nightmare rust spots i have on my van when i get the time. tried fixing rust patches before and they come back.
Amazing technique. Rusty things will come out soon, now we already know how to prevent it. Good job!
This is why I'm saving up for a new truck (meaning at a minimum of 3 years old). My plan is to rhino-line the wheel wells and around the edges of the body. The bumpers will be totally covered.

It's fine. It will make your spare, winter/rain vehicle look presentable for about 3 years with minimal cost and effort.
Thank you! My car is 75 Chevy Nova Custom. İt's have a too much rust on it. I'm gonna do what you did , but i will not paint it. I will just wrap it. What do you think about wrapping after sanding? Thanks again!
Great video. Even if you did not cut the rust out it still came out great.
looks just as good as some I seen !
How is the rust repair doing? It's been a little over 4 years. Interested in knowing how it lasted.
Good job........ showed me what i needed to know....thanx man......now i can do mine.
I would beat the rust. Hole area in about 3/4 inch, put a layer of fibre glass bondo like dura glass then maybe some bondage over that
Would steel-reinforced epoxy clay be a good substitute for welding new steel to patch any holes for us amateurs?
fantastic video. thank you
Since you don't want to weld, next time you should spray the remaining rusty area with Eastwood's rust encapsulator and then use long strand fiberglass filler on top. That cheap filler you used won't keep the water out
How long did you wait before sanding it after applying the 1st coat of bondo
was the sandpaper you used specifically for body work, and where can you get body work supplies i.e.: bond
thanks
What if he converted the rust? Would that make the repair last alot longer? like how many years before it came back if the rust was converted?
to all the viewers of this video... you have to get the rust fully off (as this guy didnt, there were two brown spots left clearly seen by the eye)... if the rust isnt removed 100% then it will expand.. ohh... and when youre putting on the coats with the iron thing your making skratches all over the paint of the car... use something made out off softer plastic material.

Thank you for your video,There is so many rusted car in my country because car making company hadn't used fixed iron pennel making the car ㅠㅠ
i have a 97 toyota corolla. almost the whole left fender is rust. should i just buy a new one from the junk yard? or try and fix it?
What flavor Pillsbury ICING are you using? Is it regular Vanilla or Cream Cheese Frosting?
Thanks a lot...but what type of filler is that...and it is just called rust filler? Thanks again
Can you provide a detailed list of the tools and paint mixtures you used so that i can buy them, greetings from Norway. Thanks in advance.
bondo in rusted out holes? Why not weld in a patch? Or use panel adhesive if you dont have access to a welder?
if your going this route, then alteast spray a decent rust converter, and then instead of body filler, use a fiberglass type filler. body filler will just attract moisture causing more rust while the fiberglass type is water resistant and shouldn't bubble if repair is small.

Good Job mate...Least your trying....Thanks for the Video...Enjoyed it well done......Jack
I just spray with rust reformer, then spray with matched color. Looks fine.
i have several nasty brown rust patches on my truck, and if this method can buy me several months of not looking at rust, it's worth $50 and a day of work. what do you want for $50 bucks?
Thanks for the video, I have a 88 buick reatta with a nickle size rust spot that I wanna fix.
Cause for concern is the rust on the inside. For cancer it is advisable to cut it out. The plastic exposed on the other side of those holes will drawn moisture leading to further corrosion. Feather edging with an orbital sander 1000+ is important before applying plastic filler.

If it's your first attempt at vehicle body work, that's reason enough not to make a video telling people how it should be done.
very helpful tips. thanks for sharing with us all!!!!

Like I said job well done!!!🏆
Remove the rusted metal. Use fiberglass cloth to patch the hole. Bondo. DONE!!
great stuff... and by the way ... the body shop for this is minimum, 500 to 750 ... just saying... saving a ton
gotta love that youtube stabilizer haha
im doing a 92 integra any suggetions to help with spots like the hood and with holes in fender s
great job bro!!! this is just the video i needed!
I have 2002 ford f150 rusting in the same spot crazy
dooman42 They ALL do. It's a bad design, but I like Ford trucks (uhhhh the older ones, but they just rusted in other areas) I never wore one out though.
Just wondering if there wasn't something better to wipe it clean instead of water?
20-30 minutes dry time is good if mixed good and at the right ratio.
Rust converter helps a lot
Excellent video. really help
It doesn't take much extra effort to spray some rust encapsulator on the area before bogging. That'll stop the rust re-appearing anytime soon. Rust will re-appear real quick on this guy's job.
That type of repair has a Gardener's Warranty. Guaranteed to bloom again in spring.
great video
How long did it last? Comin back yet?
I strongly urge anyone who's considering rust removal to buy a proper air painter if they have an air compressor, as you see getting your paint matched is a big part of any DIY job and you shouldn't cheap out on paint unless it's an old vehicle you really don't care that much about. Who cares if it's perfect? I am getting my car fixed like this tomorrow.
thank you for the video it was just what i was looking for.. :)
Very nice video, thanks a lot.
You can buy a replacement panel at lmc truck and do this the right way
Hey how much commission do you make from those affiliate links to amazon?
Bog is not the way to go :P It will last you for a short ammount of time... I would sugest you go ahead and cut out the whole piece out (where the rust is) and maybe fill it in with fibre glass to keep it nice, cheap and easy :D
Bondo makes a rubber squeegee / putty knife that would probably make it easier to spread than that metal one.
well done !!
I tink I would have cleaned up both sides of panel and use dura glass it's a water proof too! And will last many years!
This was good for me thanks
Next time uploading- don't use the motion smoothing- or image stabilization. That is what is giving the video the "I am on Shrooms" look.
More then likely that rust is rusting from the back out. You really need to cut it out, the repair may last for a year if your at least until you can see it again but the rust is still happening.
Best laugh I had in a long time, LOL,LOL,LOL
This helps a lot thank you
I waited about an hour. To be really safe wait 24 hours.
Im no car expert apart from my own experience but you should really put some rust treatment on that. Also your filler was too sloppy and you should use a flexible spreader.
I have mercury with a bit of rust fendervand near the door and i was going to bring to body shop but screw that soon ill get it done
your car was fine! keep it as is :) its cute car and show its age :--)
I Like used to look used than used to look new on surface :)
Good work! But next time put on dust mask, and eye protection my brother😊
Thank you very much for this video!
Rubber applicators would be easier but he did ok with what he had.
I used to do repairs this way when I was a teen & early 20s. this is definitely the wrong way! cut it out, weld new metal in, then fill & block sand. Etch prime, filler prime block again & paint.
Show us.
+ford nut subcribe to my page and i will eventually up load it.
Great job thanks for the video :)
hey someone selling a 1965 mustang and rust every where but someone told me you cant repair it, is that true?

Cali, do you want to spend the next 2 or 3 years worth of weekends working on that Mustang?
The guy clearly said at 1:09 its not for the pro's. Let him give guys, like me an idea of what takes for a quick fix for rust.
that angle grinder is bending time itself
cool video. thanks for uploading.
For one thing, NEVER apply bondo over holes because the finish you apply later on won't last and you'll wind up having to repair it again. I'm by far not a professional auto body guy and I even know that.
Why didnt you use the palm sander in the first place to beginning with????
Good video! You need to practice better safety precautions though. Angle grinders are very dangerous tools, and the use of gloves and a face shield should always be mandatory while using them.
What is that white stuff?
Fiberglass repair first ,sand it than body filler if you don t have the facility of welding, the rust won t come back for a long time
