I love engine builds like this. Not everyone has 25,000 to stuff in an engine. Thanks for the vid.
Yeah this still isn't a cheap build. Get you a junkyard LS complete to the throttle plate and computer / harness for about 500 from a u-pull yard out of a wrecked truck. It was running when they wrecked it. For that matter, you can grab the trans for a couple hundred more. Or buy a wrecked 3/4 ton van from Copart, then you got everything in one package to pull stuff off of.
Drop a cam / springs, a set of injectors, and a tune on it. You're pushing 450hp for about 3 grand WITH a trans.
No shit! They have no understanding of the word affordable
@@notsure7874 don't forget the turbo!
@@Se7enMiIe ya well you're not doing that for 3k, but if you want 600+hp then ya. For what they spent on this one, you could probably have a turbo too.
There's tons of great engines in junkyards.
Morning coffee and engine builds. Almost forgot it was 2020
Same!
Reminds me of Sunday mornings back in the day
Feels like 2007 again. Love it
We all should forget about 2020
The best part of waking up is engine oil on your cup lol
Love to see boneyard engine rebuilt and then upgraded...keep it up
They've done that
Switch over to the richard holdener channel if u want to see what junkyard motors can do his channel is full of ls combinations
Another great fine and upgrade. ua-cam.com/video/H-IoOS3krnU/v-deo.html
Ahh Yes, a common sense build. I've done the same with a 4.8 junk yard motor, changed valve springs, cleaned the stuck lifters(due to long overdue oil changes), and a GM hotcam and valve springs. Dropped into a '70 C10. A tire burnin', 100 smile-a-minute joy to drive. Faster than any factory truck, and I kept all the $$ for myself.
Hot cam in 4.8?
Just did the same with a 5.3 except I got Lucky no stuck lifter
@ 10:42 "But in your home shop" ... the dishwasher set to the Pots & Pans cycle will do.
That’s a great idea! Never even thought of that. I’ll have my lawyer start drawing up my divorce papers now.
That trick for mounting the oil pump with shims was really interesting. I have never seen that before on any other engine build. Well done!.
1k hp all motor!! Running 8’s! That red Camaro is IMPRESSIVE!!!!
There were some hand me down things in this video that they don't teach in these so called "tech" schools. My biggest takeaways were hammering the tape for a better paint edge and the sanding on the heads. I don't do this for a living so it may be more common knowledge for others, but it's good to know. These are the little gold nuggets of knowledge I look for that only come from working with the "old timers". I was lucky enough to work with some people that taught me things that are tricks of the trade. I have applied them throughout my travels and allowed me to do things others won't.
I bought a ATK crate engine from SummitRacing and did a cam swap for my LS project. Great value at $2200 + cam. It runs great!
2200 said and done accessories mounts ect? Thats great
@@redlight3932 no, it was a long block, but it did have oil pan, timing, valve and valley covers. I picked it up at the store in Sparks NV.
You could have bought a wrecked car and gotten everything cheaper
@@MyLonewolf25 Late reply but not always, some people want a fortune for a wreck because they know what's in it. I got lucky and picked up a truck with a super low milage L9H 6.2L and the whole drive train intact. Super pleased.
Joe was great on the show ,I am glad he is still on Tennessee Crossroads
I've been watching this show so long that I remember this episode. Still love watching it when I can find it. Mike and Top are pretty good also.
“While the heads are still a washin” love his accent 😆
Thanks for sharing some knowledge and love to see builds on this level, it's more geared for the common folk. Thanks power nation
The Honda hatchback with an LS is crazy
Big engines, american, and blind surfer voice overs, amazing
Man who knew the little GEN III engine will rule the world!
it doesnt.
@@frigglebiscuit7484 small block chevy
the 4.8 crank is nice on those 6.0 and 6.2 motors. Its like a modern DZ. maybe a consideration if youre getting motors for cheap like that.
Wow first time I actually seen pump indexin done right 👍
Awesome episode! I loved watching it. There are some useful tips that I can use.
I have the 5.3L LC9 that I'm keeping mostly stock with the exception of a valvetrain upgrade to an LS3 cam set-up which is currently on order from Summit Racing.
I had purchased a running 2001 Suburban with 229,400 miles two years ago for the intent to drop the motor into my '68 C10. But I had came across a 2005 LQ4 6.0 just a couple months ago which will be dropped into my C10 instead.
I'll continue watching your videos to learn more and apply some of the knowledge towards each of my projects.
Thank you for posting a great video!
I wanna build a 4.8 sometime. I think it would be nice
TANK YOU SO MUCH. A GREAT BUILD FOR ANY DAILY DRIVER.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! TOTALLY AWESOME VIDEO!!!! MUST WATCH!!!! THE PERFECT BUILD FOR A RELIABLE DAILY DRIVER!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING & I LEARNED SO MUCH!!!!! I LOVE LS FEST!!!
I've got a 4.8 in my Silverado and have been wanting to do a cheap build.. 👍
Do a 6.0, building a 4.8 in a truck unless it's an s10 isn't worth it unless it's boosted, it's not very fun doing all the work in a 4.8 with a sloppy stage 2 just to get beat by a stock gen 5. To compete with a 4.8 a 3600+ stall and 4.56 gears is the bare minimum and it's kinda sad because I love my 4.8 ☹️
Massive tourqe curve out of 4.8!! Ready to pull stump's!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH. A TOTALLY AWSOME BUILD. FOR ANY BUDGET.
Thanks for doing "Real World" stuff almost everyone can afford & accomplish.
Starts at 5:55
Good episode.
Love to see Joe on the show!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
How come you all didn't do all the little oil pump and sump drilling mod and porting of the sump mod. The bar bell again come on guys. Then the minor light bevel on each corner. It's the little stuff for insurance and power while your in there. Some more minor porting would be cool to see with a valve job with the cam that would be a awesome dyno test.
I just went over to summit racing to pick me up a sweet deal on a 6.0 worked over block for $700.... And bam over $1300 now 12/20/20. Nevermind on that.
Been watching this time killing show for prolly 15 years. Love it!
Great Video
I went to my first LS fest west this year and will be attending all of them from now on. amazing event.
I'm looking fwd to tue next one! I've never been to one
@@Ballen1182 definitely go to the one in Vegas if you can. You won't regret it. Tons of cars, racing and vendors giving stuff away for free. Plus Vegas is just fun in general lol.
Ls is the way to go id give anything to have my ls built like one of these I have a 5.3 mostly stock.swapped in a 01 mustang I'm on dialysis and can't work on my car as much
Was it hard, I’m looking to put an Ls in an 02 mustang
Love the LS fest I wish it was closer to me

That is one clean 240
Cam ported heads tune done
Who here pretended to help push a car at least once?
👍
A few times....😁😁😁
Glad to see you guys listening to the masses. You don't need a bunch of expensive parts to have some fun with an LS.
Funny how the internet loves to say the LS is "Affordable", yet the only one affordable anymore is the smallest displacement...while a 350 is still affordable enough no one goes to buy a 262 cid version.
They always forget to mention all the expensive components need to install the cheap 5.3 or 4.8 into an older vehicle, the cost for a conversion harness and fuel system and exhaust will easily be over $1,500 plus all the little miscellaneous needed just to make it start, let alone tuning. Of your vehicle was already set up for a small block then it would be cheap just to put in or hop up the small block.
@@briang4470 exactomondo! Give me a G body with a 305 in it, and its cheaper to find a Vortec 350 or any Gen one 350, and swap over the oil pan, throttle linkage, power steering setup, alternator brackets, and so on--'cause its all free if you aren't looking for chrome.
What's gonna be fun years from now, when all these LS swaps hit the used hot rod market...a buyer wants to know what year harness was used on what year engine, and the seller's gonna shrug, "dunno, used a 5.3, blew it up, got a 4.8, hacked the harness for other sensors...its probably half car, half SUV harness by now."
Then over in the Ford camp...everyone who dumped cash into a 4.6 litre DOHC Terminator swap thinking they have the latest fad....now look as dated as a 1990's LT1 swap as everyone's crushing over a Coyote swap instead. Might as well do a Dart 363 bored and stroked out, with a top end that looks old school but kicks Coyote ass.
Yes sir
love that s14
Cool dude 😎
Damn that Camero is still smoking 😮
What ever happened to the 300 inch Ford 6,, I would sure like to see that Turbo..
The oil pump alignment trick is cool, but where do you buy 6 .0015 shims? Or just have 6 feeler gauge sets?
VVVT - i & V - Tec Camshafts POWER NATION !
Bare blocks on Summit Racing are now in the $2,500-$3,000 range.
I'd build engines every day just cant handle cleaning all the parts, huge job to do right .
Bad ass 240
Another video with this old man installing camshafts with a sledgehammer.
I bet it would have made more power with 706/862 heads. Those big valves were shrouded by the small 4.8 cyl bore.
I'm a Mopar guy but got to say the LS is a great engine that's for sure GM fixed all the mistakes they did with the small block and made it a great engine i'm a big fan of the 4.9/5.3 and how easy to slap a turbo on them and make a thousand HP without doing too much
@@bigboreracing356 ohhh yes it did LOL. but now that ive typed this, youre gonna go all ape shit as usual. you love to stalk these videos and spew shit about how much you love big block chevies, and how everything else somehow sucks. grumpy jenkins and smokey yunick even complained to chevy about their engines.
hey taz, i see you on jeds videos all the time lol. i prefer mopar small blocks, since they had all the mistakes chevy made solved. i love their exhaust port too.
What mistakes did gm make?
@@bigboreracing356 Wrong! GM fixed Chryslers mistakes and even had to make the computer module for some of their transmissions because Chrysler couldn't get it right. 🤣
Not even break the glaze? No decarbonizing?
Engine Power is the spiritual successor to Horsepower which was formally known as Horsepower TV and even way back in the 1990s it was known as Hot Rod TV.
Nice job guys. I do have a question? Why did you not brake the glaz on the cylinders, and clean the pistons. This thing had some, even if little damage from that bad lifter. Just asking?
If you don't have a Washer like you guys, an old Dishwasher can work for most part short of sticking the engine block in it. I did my intake manifold like that when I was redoing the top end of my engine.
In the end it doesn’t look bad I have the same engine but on a budget yeah i understand but I would’ve gone the whole way on the paint
Ahh the good ol' msd 6014, I got a 5.3 LM7 from a friend for $100, less than 90k, and he had pulled it years ago and didn't use it, I got that, an intake from Holley cause it was the cheapest at the time, and the MSD 6014 box, and got some budget Longtube's, and swapped it in my 1986 Camaro Z/28 for under $1000, used my old Edlebrook 650cfm carburator that I already had, and the swap works amazing and actually lights up the rear tires for the first time in the cars life😂 it's impressive what you can do with these LS engines, it's a night and day difference in power from the stock engine I had and there is soo much more aftermarket options to go with on these, I'm planning to go with small twins going to an 850cfm demon carb for a blow thru boost set-up, but first I'm gonna test the full reliability of the n/a setup before boost to get use to it, it's not tested yet cause I have to fix other things to meet vermont inspection requirements, after all this was originally a $900 Camaro
JDM finessing with that goat kart chasis
I live on my own. Those heads are going in the dish washer
The factory heads will perform better than those 243 because of more compression ratio
That's how you get those perfect lines, but it annoys everyone in the shop 🤣
Basic simple video …. The only I notice you said the original same bearings for rod and main. Did replace all them bearings with new bearings? Also new piston rings ? ( new builder )
An LS and a 6 speed manual in an International Scout! If I had a bunch of money that would be my daily driver.
Yall should revisit the Buick 350 now that TA has a giant open plenum intake and aluminum heads out for it now.
WoW ... Mike Galley in the Nissan ! ... I wouldn't Evan take a picture with Vin Diesel !
Great info…I’m wondering can I do the same with 5.3 engine
I’ve never known anyone to use a 4.8. Usually see people go with 5.3 if they are going cheap
Rip Joe
Those ls engines are hard to beat right now who ever designed this engine never have to work again🤑
Ummm so you don’t have to measure pushrods after a cam swap??
Timing cover still moving when you tightened.
@5:55 you can see a 5.3L cast into the front of the block.
I saw that and I was like wtf lol. Maybe they wanted a 5.3 but talk about a 4.8 which is basically the same thing build wise. It's also a flat piston so it should be a 4.8.
it’s the same block for the 4.8 & 5.3. you can see 4.8 casting right above the 5.3 in the same frame
@@gravydreams666 the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 all share the same block.
@@googleaccount2637 6.0 bore size is bigger.
Just waiting for the factory warranty to expire on my 2500HD with the 6.0. Then it's game on.
Did you replace the rings? How many miles on the engine?
Run the heads through the dishwasher while the wife is at the store.
Naw, I like being married and not murdered.
I still like my practically bullet proof 5.3 vortec
I have a 2010 dodge ram big horn crewcab 4x4 5.7 hemi, soon I have to replace both exhaust manifolds, because of expanding and shrinking bolts break, cast iron block aluminum heads, what would be the best manifold bolts?
That car would be a good 11 second car for competition
@@bigboreracing356 when I saw your comment I was like that name seems familiar and then I went to the old Chevy truck towing video, and good luck with your build
What valve spring compressor did you use to disassemble them?
If you review helmets can you say if they're DOT, SNELL, ANSI ?
Hey what happened to the regular 2 engine power guys Galley and Topolinsky????? They're my favorites! ! Oh - I see Mike was just hiding. Who is the new guy and where's Pat?
Going to rebuild a 4.8 thinking about the cam and rockers and headers and possibly a turbocharged or supercharged injector system off of a Cadillac I'll have to go price everything now by the way did you pass the gauge the mains and inserts just wondering
Link for LS crate engine is no good. Great video!
Where can I find I shop that can upgrade my 4.8 like this one in Dallas tx guys?
Can we see a build of the s14.
Picked up a 88 firebird for 500 bucks. Already has a 700r4 time for a 4.8
That little 4.8 is gonna smash with that 700r4. 🙂👍
Awesome, I am another proud 4.8L owner in my 05 Cat-Eye! Would love to see the numbers and maybe if you guys would love to donate that engine to my truck project? Copart Chevy Silverado 1500
These guys still over spent. Find one that spins, apply $200 8706 or elgin sloppy stage 2 cam, pac1218 springs, flex fuel injectors, and a gt45. Tune, piping, intercooler, etc will be up to you cost wise. Make 500+ wheel horsepower and still spend less money than these part pushers.
Does anyone know if it’s ok to use the same clean up process on the intake and exhaust mating surface on the heads, 80grit dry to 1500 with wd40? Or should you not be sanding that surface?
Sure sand your heads. That's awesome...
Some stuff you should spend the money on and a clean-up pass is not a bad thing.
Ok. We need that 240 build uploaded.
Yea we do!
@@DaJuiceBox35 with 240s not the easiest to find I wonder if an LS would fit in a 350z.
No mention of checking correct push rod length? Why not? Simple to check.
Why not mls head gaskets?
When’s the ford 300 straight 6 video coming?
ya but the exhaust is so loud, think it might loose 40mph just making it quiet? cant hear it idling from 20 feet kind of quiet.
Kinda reminds me of richard holder
I am surprised that the cam lobe and lifter particles did not make it through the oil circuit .
@@bigboreracing356 And the bearings were all good to go ?
Why not new pistons, rings and bearings?
Anyone check the new and misaligned cam bearings
