  • More than a year after AMD launched their Ryzen 5000 CPUs, budget friendly versions of the architecture are available. We start by looking at the R5 5600 against the 5600X & i5-12400.

    Watch our AMD R5 5500 review here: • AMD's Greed: R5 5500 C...
These benchmarks of the AMD R5 5600 vs. Intel i5-12400 and AMD R5 5600X (and i5-12500 and several others) looks at gaming performance, video editing and rendering performance, code compile, power consumption, 3D modeling and art, and more. Our goal is to determine whether the new R5 5600 is worth it, particularly against the long-standing R5 5600X which has recently faced challenges from Intel’s Alder Lake 12th Gen CPUs. We’ll be reviewing the AMD Ryzen 5 5500, R7 5700X, and R5 4500 in upcoming videos, but for now, the focus is on the R5 5600.

You forgot to mention that I5-12400 has integrated GPU and the AMD one doesn't have. That's pretty significant for people like me that don't play games. And this probably affects power consumption of the CPU.

I've been thinking about upgrading, given the 5000 series price drops and the prospective 5800x3D. 30$ extra on a 200$ part for a higher bin isn't "crazy" at all m8. If you think so then you need to go after the ENTIRE market! Also comparing a 1½ year old part to a new part and complaining about the price when it's virtually leveled out by now is - iffy at best!

It's interesting to see that they both come with the same cooler, as the last gen it was widely considered that the X on the 3600 basically got you a better pack-in cooler and that was the reason for the slightly better clocks on the 3600X, not so much actual performance binning, and you could easily get the same performance with the 3600 by pairing it with a decent cheap cooler. It appears with the same pack in cooler in this generation, this is more apparent. I wonder if this maintains using the PBO, as this would better demonstrate higher clock/power tolerances, although it would have to be a bit greater than the 200Mhz difference, which would still make for very little difference in most titles.

An important consideration is the fact 12400 has an iGPU, which is useful for troubleshooting; especially if we're still in the current GPU climate and your GPU dies, you're left with a non-working PC with AMD or Intel -F CPUs. It's a rare scenario but it's worth considering

  •  2 роки тому +28

Regarding in-socket upgrades; I was completely sure the Haswell i5 in my 2013 build would die with the system. I stretched my budget to get that i5 so the whole build would last me years, "until the next build". I'm now in year 9 of owning this system. I can't justify dropping the cash for a new system because I'm not a professional, my gaming has dwindled to a few minutes per week, and even so, my RX 570 still has a $200 street price. But I could justify $40 for an 4C/8T Xeon with boosted frequencies. The productivity and usability boost is noticeable and respectable considering the price I paid.
I guess the bottom line is, start with a chip that covers what you need it to do and don't overspend. Then if the need arises, upgrade.

Same situation here. I still have my i7-6700k from 7 years ago and I can't be any happier. Good CPU that gets the job done. I had to upgrade my GPU unfortunately to an RTX 2060S because of some software support issues I encountered (before the GPU shortage, fortunately), otherwise I would've kept my 1060 6GB. All tech UA-camrs usually push the latest and greatest, that's their job, nothing wrong with that, but that puts pressure on the consumer. So yeah, upgrade only if you need.

I recommend waiting dro Cashback promo from MSI and Gigabyte and snatching a good b550 for 50€ in total.
Coupling that with a 5600, you will have a CPU that is 100% faster in games than i7 4770k.
Much smoother 1% lows in gameplay, i5 Haswell may become a stuttering mess in newer games nowadays.
So you may want to look at this last AM4 platform as it will be couple years before DDR5 will be as cheap as DDR4 and so it's your last opportunity to upgrade before EoL for AM4 and LGA1700.

I think most of the best use cases for the new CPUs is going to be for people upgrading insocket, I am thinking of upgrading from a 1600AF and I have a friend considering upgrading from a 1300X and it would be really helpful to see if the performance uplifts are worth the hassle/cost of swapping CPUs. Quick story, recently I purchased the 5600x over the i5-12400f. The reason being that when I took a trip to microcenter, I found a 5600x for $198, $20 more expensive than the Intel counterpart. However, the B550 MB where cheaper and had better features when compared to B660 MB. In other words, check whether the combo of CPU+MB offers the best value. Adobe Premiere rendering sped up due to quick sync.
Possibly either of the two cpus doing virtualization or server hosting for games.

This CPU may have come way later than it should have, but for me it'll be a worthwhile, in-socket upgrade. I can't wait. Even with my RX 580 (still haven't been able to upgrade my GPU), frame time consistency will be so much better.

@@celzolsen8988 the 5600? Impressive as hell. All of the R5s that aren't the "x-sku" have always been the best value imo. Holds up really well with my 3060ti now. I can play cp2077 at 1440p and it's beautiful. DLSS helps out too, though not really worth it with 1080p. All in all it's crazy to think of how far AMD has come, to where you can get a $150 (or even less currently) 6c/12t CPU with the single and multi-threaded capabilities it has. You gotta think, 5 years ago the R5 1600 wasn't even close to Intel in terms of IPC or clock speed, now it trades blows with the 12400 (Intel's best "budget" 6-core pre-Raptor Lake)

In case you are building from scratch it more or less a matter of tossing a coin if prices of the entire platforms are similar. I know you did not ask me but, I'm aiming to get Rx 6600 XT when it hits msrp or below to pair with my 5600X, it is enough for gaming at 1080p with 75 or 90 fps. It also provides access to Amd FSR for games that are poorly optimized and it is a great GPU to undervolt and overclock for better performance, lower power consumption and thus lower heat generation. (It is easy to do that with Adrenaline, the AMD overclock software). Depends what you aim for in your computer, I want great performance for low power consumption and AMD delivers. The best one is the Asus RoG strix version dual fan but I'm keeping my eye on the MSI version to pair it with my motherboard (plus I had only good experiences with MSI).
PS: Anything above 6600 XT has diminishing returns and you should get only if you want 4k gaming or you're loaded and can spend money on this. Also, if power consumption is not a problem and you don't want to get a GPU now, wait to see what's up with the 7000 series later this year.
I know this was unsolicited advice but I have already written the comment so I'm posting. Cheers! ^_^

@@drygon9324 I recently had a very painful experience with MSI. Building a 10400 for the wife, with the cheapest stuff I could find at my local store. The motherboard had the WORST manual I have come across, the pin labels were nowhere near where they marked them on the manual. Being fairly novice at PC building (not my first time by any means) I followed the instructions. That led to what seemed to be a DOA board. I got onto MSI live chat, and explained that there were no lights on the board when powered up. The tech immediately said "sounds like a dead board" and suggested I return it. I took it to the store 45 minutes away, with everything else I had bought earlier that morning, and had the helpful fellow behind the counter test everything, and it was all in working order. Come to find out, in a most embarrassing way, that I had the front panel connected in the wrong spot, and there are no lights on that board whatsoever when powered up unless there is a problem, which would apparently light the little troubleshooting LEDs. Really great customer service on MSI's part...

It turned out fine in the end, stuffed it all back into the ancient E-machines case and she isn't bugging me about the slow computer any more. I tried to explain that 50 google chrome tabs and the filled to the brim storage were the main problems, but that wasn't a fight worth fighting for $600 (cdn) The A10 6800 was pretty long in the tooth anyway. The retailer I'm looking at for price estimates has the 5600X down for $400 CAD (which is to say, still at the original MSRP plus the currency difference and what might be called the Canada tax (It's not a tax, sales tax goes on after you start the purchase process, but it's the cost of shipping it up to Canada and dealing with our lower customer density (population density). (They do run sales occasionally that drop that down to $290 or so, which is more in keeping with the price you're saying is to be expected in the US, but for budgeting purposes, I'm not taking sale prices.)
Their cost for the 5600 not-X is $259 CAD. So that X would cost me $140 CAD. Definitely not worth it.

The performance uplift you would be getting from a 12400 vs an 11400 isn't really enough for me in order to justify the additional costs associated with going with the newer platform in comparison to this one (especially since the 11400 can actually keep up with a 12400 in most instances). Of course, as far as enthusiast components are concerned, intel's latest platform curbstomps anything from its higher end rocketlake offerings; however, when it comes to the mid range market atm I feel as though it is fine to save money where you can and instead go with an 11th gen intel system with an i5 11400.

The CPU is a R5 3600 and the GPU a 6600 XT. My question is what to do with the old parts: a B450, 32GB ram, etc? The only thing missing to complete a second system is CPU and GPU. Should I upgrade my 3600 to a 5000 series (like a 5700X), and then get a cheap GPU like a 1650 for the old system? Should I keep the 3600 and try and find an elusive APU like a 3300G that would work with the B450? Maybe if MSI would support 5000 series APU in B450, that would help.

  • @RurouTube
    @RurouTube 2 роки тому +2

I initially want to buy 5000 series CPU, but since it was so expensive, I ended up buying 3600. The good thing is that from Zen2 to Zen3 there is a big performance uplift, so I'm planning to upgrade my CPU in the future. But currently, I'm comfortable with 3600 and not in a rush to buy 5600 since my current GPU is probably the limiting factor (RX580). When I buy a new GPU, likely around 3060 or 6600 tier GPU, then I will probably upgrade my CPU (in-socket upgrade). Definitely not planning to go to 7000 series CPU or Alder Lake since I don't want to buy DDR5 nor do I think these new PCI5 DDR5 mainboard is mature enough. With a lot of changes currently happening and also in the horizon (new PSU standard, DDR5, PCI5, USB4), I don't think it is wise for me who is constrained in terms of budget to immediately jump on these new stuff. Not only I need to buy potentially a lot of new stuff, but also those new stuff might get old pretty quickly. When the platform matures, then I will consider moving to AM5 or Intel future offering.
I'm hoping by the time I buy the new GPU (hopefully it will be next gen AMD or Nvidia), R7 CPU price can come down more, so it will be a more substantial upgrade going from R5 3600 to R7 5700 or 5800. And yes, I already have good enough cooler to handle 5800 series so that part shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the comparison! Have a good mid-tier X370 Motherboard - I was thinking a lot if I should go for Intel instead which would have generated a much higher cost. Seeing the power consumption and the real life performance difference (not to mention the performance / value) between the R5 5600 and the Intel versions - I'm super happy with this upgrade :) Used to have a R5 1600x so it's a "big" jump on my casual scale - Thanks Steve!

It is so good when two companies have amazing products and are trying to 1-up each other constantly. Hopefully the same will happen with the GPU market when Intel joins and the shortage ends.

really all depends on your work load and how much time you wanna tinker with your settings. I've had 1700X but wanted to upgrade and could only get a 5600X due to what I could get my hands on. I was disappointed at first but figured it's not a big deal since AMD new AM5 would be within a year or so and this cpu could hold me off. After a few changes in ryzen master and some in the bios my 5600X when playing games bouncing between 4600 and 4800 depending on the load. once a stress test is put on it pretty much is stuck at 4600 which is the max boost so it makes sense. Adjusting the precision over boost an extra 200mhz in ryzen master will allow the cpu to try and turbo up to 4800 if your have the power and cooling. So playing games at 4.6-4.8ghz and being able to get the most bang for the buck leaves me content.

Just got myself to microcenter and bought a 5600 for $129. Upgrading from a 1600 ae. So from 1st generation Ryzen.
I won't lie, the tech messed up and printed me outfor a 5600x and as I was walking to the checkout I was like hold on a second. I never forgot this very video, knew there was no reason to get the X for $30 more. Thanks Gamers Nexus. I probably would have let it slide if I never watched this.

Would have been more excited if the 5600 and 5700X launched within the first 6 month of the Zen 3 release.

I'd like to see benchmarks for a heavy modded Fallout 4. The Bethesda engine runs a lot of scripts which makes the game cpu-bound. It would be really interesting to see how cpus with different tech specs perform. Bethesda will be releasing Starfield later this year with the next version of the engine so knowing how cpus react could be very useful to people buying systems to play modded Bethesda games.
