    He didn't even know how to ride much when he started this movie, but he had a couple of very good cowboys teaching him, and obviously had a natural talent for it. He took that nosedive full-speed, straight-on, and showed 'em all what a real man can do. We call that "all balls." LOL Beautiful movie, even now.

    There’s never a better scene when Clancy didn’t even want to go down the hill, and there Jim went, the mountain man. One of the best scenes and movies ever made. Makes me want to leave the ocean life in Hawaii for the country but I know deep down I think I’ll just dream I was Jim. This movie is old to where I don’t think the younger generation (my generation) ever cares for or watches these movies! I love this, particularly the part where the horse kicks off as they go over the edge. I think of the words of the poem, this brings it to life. The only problem I have, is that it shows the one scene in the movie that really bugs me. After they go over, Harrison says "you can bid the mob good day". The timing is wrong. The poem says "And upward, ever upward, the wild horses held their way, where Mountain ash and Currajong grew wide: and the old man muttered fiercely "We may bid the mob good day. No man can hold them down the other side". In the movie Harrison says it after the man from Snowy River goes over the summit. That's too late. It should be during the chase, before the summit.

    • @NavvyMom
      @NavvyMom 3 роки тому +1

      Well this reply is five years late, but saying it anyway. I don't have a problem with the timing of that line. Maybe they could have done a closeup of Kirk Douglas galloping along and muttering that line, but imo it would have taken away from the flow of the cinematography, and that great soundtrack.
      Plus I'll be honest in that I had never read the poem before seeing the movie (American here, sadly we are not made aware of greats like Mr. Patterson). I thought it was perfect to have Harrison say that as the mob made their (seeming) escape.
      Also, for all these years I thought he was saying, "You can bid them my good day." Which totally fitted the arrogance of his character, to me anyway, because it always seemed to me he was including the Man from Snowy River in that statement. To me he was dismissing and disparaging the Man from Snowy River for attempting what even Clancy wouldn't dare. I assumed he couldn't see whether Jim had made it all the way down and didn't care.
      Anyway, thanks for setting me straight after all these years about what Harrison was actually saying!

    This is the Aussie spirit! Always loved this scene, and Tom Burlinson did all his own riding, no stunt doubles, and it was a decent hill he went down!

    I wish they could have reproduced this for "12 Strong". A stallion ridden by Captain Will Summers, 5th SF, ODA 595, one day in Afghanistan in October 2001 was especially strong and spirited. During one especially harrowing ride off of a high mountain pass, zig-zagging down multiple switch-backs, his horse took his own lead and leaped straight down the mountainside:
    "And my horse turned and faced straight down the hill. And he crouched down like a cat, and just sprung off the side of the mountain. I think about three to five horse lengths later, his front feet hit. And, this guy just took off like lightning down the side of a cliff. The only thing that went through my mind was this 1980s movie, "The Man from Snowy River". And so, I was like, "Okay, the guy from Snowy River, he put his head on the back of the horse, and he put his feet up around his neck."
    And so, my feet came up, my head goes back. And I have like horsetail on the back of my head. And this guy just tears down the side of this mountain where at the bottom of it is like a gully about six to 12 feet deep, and about four feet wide, and he successfully jumped over that.
    I guess about 20m later, the General [Dostum] and some of his entourage had finally caught up. He stopped and looked at me kind of strange again, but a little different this time. And, he said something to me. And he started off again on his horse. And he turned around, and he said something again. And I knew that he was pretty serious about what he was saying. And, then we walked off. His translator said, "The General just paid you a great compliment." I was like, "Wow, that's great. What did he say?" And, he said, "Truly, you are the finest horseman he has ever seen." ...And then he had stopped and said, "In addition to this, I was the most daring and brave man he had ever known."
