Thanks for watching!
Welcome back to the Dresden Files Josh! I hope you continue to enjoy it.
Thanks, Chas!
Seconded, I love that series!
Dead Beat let’s gooooooooooo!!!! I’m so pumped to reread that one soon and chat about it.
I loved Fire and Blood so unexpectedly last year-the whole project of a fictional history book may not work for any given reader but I was astounded by Martin’s creativity and specificity with all the details, and the meta-narratives involving the historians and sourcing was so cool.
I really look forward to our talk!
I'm looking forward to getting back to Dresden Files! I'll reach out in the next week or two to you and Ben to schedule our discussion on Dead Beat. I will also be reading Altar of My Fate by Michael Schultheiss very soon. So many great books this summer ahead for you!
Hey, Philip, thank you so much for your interest in The Rosteval Saga as well!
@@MichaelRSchultheiss I’m looking forward to it!
Sounds great! I look forward to chatting about Dead Beat with you and Ben!
Now that my dissertation is finished I hope to knock out a few anticipated reads: Grace of Kings (Ken Liu); Lions of Al-Rassan (GGK); How High We Go In The Dark (Sequioa Nagamatsu); The Stress of Her Regard (Tim Powers); Eisenhower in War and Peace (Jean Edward Smith); plus some Shakespeare in reading with friends :)
Congratulations on finishing your dissertation! I know that was a tremendous endeavor. You have some great reads ahead of you!
You had to do it. You had to get me looking at my August TBR. You had to make me consider King Rat. I almost have to read it now because I love the name of the book so much. Touche, Red Fury Books, touche.
Join us!!
🤣 Sorry to blow up the TBR! We’re all enablers of each other!
Ah nice, I also just started my (re?)read of The Crimes of Rooker Flynn and I am loving how it turned out! And excited for you to start your Dennis Lehane rereads, your passion for his works is so infectious! Also curious to see how Memories of Ice is going to turn out. Happy reading!
Thanks, Esmay!!
King Rat was one of my favorite novels as a teen, I read it several times. Hope you enjoy it!
Great to know!
I hope you have a crack at The Mountain in the Sea, a recent read for me. You can tell Nayler is a subject matter expert and that reflects to an interesting view on how it will look in our future!
I'm also randomly reading Dead Beat in July! Glad there's a group and look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts. I always hear this is when it starts to take off.
Oh nice!
House of Open Wounds is great.
Thank you so much for your interest in The Rosteval Saga! Also, kudos on your impeccable pronunciation!
I should’ve included the bloopers! 😂
Cormac!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 It is a Very dark book but emotionally impactful i think.
I’m glad to know these things going in!
That's an incredible bit of coincidence seeing Rooker Flynn in the same set of books as King Rat. That story was a huge source of inspiration for Rooker and the Locke Institute, and probably my favorite of the Asian Saga. Again, thank you so much for lending your keen eye to Rooker's story, Josh, you're wonderful!
Oooh, now I’m REALLY even more intrigued to read King Rat!
@@RedFuryBooks It's no Shōgun but it is a fantastic amoral prison camp story. A bit of inspiration for Malkovich in Empire of the Sun as well. Plus, you know, 390 pages is nice.
Super pumped about you all reading Dead Beat together, that will be a fun discussion! I'll be reading Mystic River tbis month as well.
Oh awesome!
Hope you and your orchestra are enjoying your European Tour! 😃
On my Summer TBR, I have:
The "Memory, Sorrow & Thorn" Trilogy by Ted Williams (Epic Fantasy, major inspiration for GRR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire")
“A Brightness Long Ago” by Guy Gavriel Kay (Historical Fantasy inspired by Renaissance Italy)
The "Prince of Nothing" Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker (Dark/Epic Fantasy inspired by the Crusades and “Dune”)
"Tiamat's Wrath" & "Leviathan Falls" by James S.A. Corey (The final two novels in the "Expanse" Space Opera series)
Thanks, Mac! Your TBR looks amazing. Tad Williams is a priority for me probably next year and I’ll be periodically continuing my GGK journey as well.
King Rat was based on clavells experience from the ww2 prison camps👍
I am picking up Blood and Fire end of this month as well!
Awesome! I hope we both love it!
Always enjoy your videos. I think the venn diagram of our reading tastes would damn near be a circle. There are a couple books on my top 10 all time list that I first got recommended here (Hyperion and Lonesome Dove). I think maybe it's time I dive into Lehane, I've had Shutter Island and Mystic River sitting on the shelf for far too long now.
Glad our tastes align and I can give you recommendations- feel free to send some my way as well! I hope Lehane works for you as he does for me!
Dead Beat is great, probably my third favorite after Changes and Ghost Story. And it introduces my favorite character.
Memories of Ice is also a favorite. I’m almost done with my second re-read of Malazan. If you end up not liking it, just stop.
I could make up plans for a summer, but I would never end up following them. I’m in the middle of about 12 long series, so those will probably figure prominently (Earthsea, Kingsbridge, Lymond Chronicles, Malazan, Dark Tower, Bartchester Chronicles, Night Soldiers, War of Light And Shadow, Newford, Hyperion Cantos, Conan, Tarzan and probably some others.)
Great to know about Dead Beat! And your list of series you currently have in progress is remarkable.
In Chile, my home, is winter. So I'm going to go big, I just started Pillars of the earth, then I'm going with some Joe Abercrombie's, I can't decide which one yet. I can read 15 books a month like you, but 2 or 3 books is good too. Happy reading.
Stay warm! For Abercrombie, my personal recommendation is to start at the beginning with The Blade Itself.
I just finished Shadow of a Dark Queen. It was so good to get back to reading some Feist
Awesome! I’ve heard good things about this series.
I'm reading my first Dennis Lehane right now, Small Mercies. And 61%, I gotta say - these Southies are in harsh! 🚬 👊 😵
Also, taking You Like It Darker in bits and pieces between other novels. Just finished Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream (my favorite so far).
Read and loved Dead Man's Walk this week, so I plan to finish McMurtry's LD series soon with Comanche Moon.
And finally, I plan to finish Realm of the Elderlings with Assassin's Fate 😢. After that, I'll probably be too numb to know for sure what I'll feel like reading next...
This is an amazing group of books in your comment. My top two authors, plus more LD and glad to hear you loved Dead Beat! I’ll be starting it in the next week.
I just read the Carnival book in May. It was pretty good, the same as the other Firefly books. The series I'm most looking forward to reading is Suneater. I think I read Howling Dark next. It's gonna be awesome, I'm sure. I'm also about to read Wisdom of Crowds in July and then I'll be done with that series. And I have two more Dungeon Crawler Carl books to read, which are always a lot of fun.
I hope you love The Wisdom of Crowds like I do! I’m still hopeful to start Sun Eater later this year.
I think you will love King Rat. I didn’t like ‘Gsi Jin either
Always love the way you talk about books, wishing many great reads over summer! I've been stuck on the same book because every time I try reading family members suddenly want to go out to do something 😅
Thank you and I hope you’re able to carve out some reading time this summer!
I read 4 to 5 books per month from my TBR. I've only planned the Stand by King and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.
Quality not quantity!
I am going on vacation with two booktubers recommends in tow, Darien, book 1 of the Empire of Salt ( from Benghis Kahn) & Lord of the Shattered Land( Andrew Wizard).🤞
Have a great trip!
Good luck with MoI. I read it as a buddy read earlier this year and it wasn’t well received by anyone in the group. I thought the ending was good but it’s just not a serious I enjoy or intend to continue. Dresdine has been a bit of a mixed bag for me but I think I really enjoyed Dead Beat. Also huge fan of Connelly as well. I’m about halfway through the Bosch series and I think he’s my favorite crime author
Only time will tell with MOI. Glad you’re enjoying Connelly. Although I’ve been talking about Lehane a lot this year, Connelly is still my favorite crime author. Pound for pound the most consistently great author I’ve read.
King Rat has fantastic characters and an interesting story. Have fun with it!
Thanks!
It’s hard not to get TBR envy from this video. So many great books on here. As much as I want to get to King Rat, I’m enjoying Clavell too much and am going to my usual approach of putting off my favourite series to stretch out the enjoyment 🫣
Nothing wrong with that strategy!
The only one you’re going to be reading that I’ve read is The Mountain in the Sea. Interesting and enjoyed it but didn’t love it.
Excited for King Rat and Mystic River! Hell yeah Fire and Blood finally!! Love that book. Need to read it again
Omega Seamaster?
Yes! On an Artem Sailcloth strap. Good eye!
I'm surprised you liked the road, I thought it had the worst dialogue I had ever read.
