Man Australia and South Africa from 1998 to 2012 had one of the best rivalries of all time. You could pick any game played between them and have 2-3 heart stopping moments in each one, at a minimum. the closest would probably be 2019 icc cwc final? two times draw, brn stokes rolling on the floor six, trent boult stepping on the rope and giving them a six and the controversial rule that gave eng the win. but aus vs sa is still a legendary game ever
Still to this day the best ODI ever played. They should replay the entire game on TV every year on the anniversary. What made the match a thriller was not just the chase but South Africa losing 9 wickets and then still able to chase it.Had it been 60 overs they would have gone well above 600 with the way they played.Kudos should also being given to the way Aussie batted. It was total carnage and the bowlers were going all over the park. But it indeed was a remarkable chase.Without a doubt the best match.

I still consider Johan van der Wath's contribution as the most crusial knock of SA's innings. When he came to bat Kallis and Kemp were already dismissed cheaply and that could had become the turning point of the match. He pulled the asking rate down to run a ball when it was actually needed.
SA vs Aus....it doesn't get better. When these two teams play each other in any format they produce the most engrossing games of cricket. For me SA vs Aus has been the most exciting watchable rivalry in cricket over the last 20 years.
well this chase was a game changer I remember in 2003 worldcup final Aussies putting up a target of 360 & it seems almost impossible but after this game everything seems possible e.g. In 2013 Aussies put up a target of 360 infront of India And India got it in 42-43 over only
Australian bowling became very mediocre by 2013 they dont have mcgrath brett lee shane warne gilspie 438 chase actually have tough bowlers like brett lee symonds braken that what makes it so special
I was kid that time. I saw the first innings and left it after it. I knew australia has won. I called my friends and went to play cricket. When I came back home and turn on TV, I was stunned to see the results.
I still remember this game well. It was my 12th Board exam next day. My uncle told me SA have scored around 300 in 35 overs. I just kept my book aside and started watching the match. Once in a lifetime match.
I know this match. Everyone in India was talking about this match! I was in school and everyone was talking about this every minute. 😂 Fuckin would love to see this type of Proteas team again !
Interestingly enough that score has yet to be chased down. Sure teams have topped that score but no team has yet to beat a score even close to that...YET. In my opinion it is by far the best ODI ever played. Sure the bowling by both teams was crap but it did allow for great scores. As a Saffa, I still watch it. Not to mention all the records that were broken that day.
Ridiculous!!!!!! First time a team reaching 400+,and then the opponent successfully chasing it And don't forgot the T20 era had just began ,the players were not used to hitting boundries constantly SA really dismantled the strong bowling line up of Aus
I watched this game live from Sri Lanka. After Australia scored 434 I turned it off and said the game is over. Buton the next day I saw SA won the game on criicinfo. My jaw literally dropped and triple checked the result in multiple sites to make sure it's true.
I had seen this match live on TV. and I do remember I watched it from 46th over of Aussie innings. Waking up that night chori chori from parents for this match was worthy
Believe me that time Australian team was really good in all Format. And my PAA said me that this is the highest run made by team in ODI. i start watching from SA inning and they are on fire that time. I aksed to my father who is going to win?? They said SA. i laughed and say that's impossible😏. But after 25-30 overs later SA fight back... And they won this Epic fight with Australia... And I started my playing journey from this match. I get attracted towards cricket, love it, play it passionately. Still I'll every format of cricket..
5:10 As much as I enjoyed that match, that particular thing he mentions isn't good for Cricket. I remember watching this match live, I didn't saw AUS' Innings but saw in the news that AUS made a huge score & decided to check. SA then appeared to be giving a good fight in their Innings, so I got glued up till the end. It was unbelievable, thought SA was losing till the end.
I remember that day, i was playing cricket and we lost the ball in the swamp. So i went with my friends to get a new ball from the store and i remember storekeeper telling me about the game, we all started laughing at him and i even said that it must have been a test cricket or may be somebody was playing that game on a playstation.
what a day that was. i watched the whole part of the game till i had to leave to a mates sons birthday party..i said who on earth planned this party today? i was furious. when i saw Gibbs come out i saw it in his eyes....oh s....t thought. he is gone in a few balls...could see the alcohol in his eyes...but man when he started hitting....i felt it in my bones....there is now a small chance with him and Smith. the end was more surprising....and showed how much respect even Australia had for Gibbs. they gave Ponting the man of the match award. he offered to share it with Gibbs, despite Ponting bowlling as well,he felt Gibbs knocking that 175 was good enough for him to share the award. and he knew he drunk when he played..making it more impressive.

For me SA vs Aus has been the most exciting watchable rivalry in cricket over the last 20 years.
well this chase was a game changer I remember in 2003 worldcup final Aussies putting up a target of 360 & it seems almost impossible but after this game everything seems possible
Best match ever. Back then it was big grounds. Small Bats. And noneofthe new fielding restrictions
Whenever anything seemed impossible. I will always remember that this match happened
Can you imagine Hersch had batted another 18 overs lmoa
Could have made 270 Runs Harshal Gibs.
I know this match. Everyone in India was talking about this match! I was in school and everyone was talking about this every minute. 😂 Fuckin would love to see this type of Proteas team again !
Watched it live
It really changed ODI CRICKET
Interestingly enough that score has yet to be chased down. Sure teams have topped that score but no team has yet to beat a score even close to that...YET. In my opinion it is by far the best ODI ever played. Sure the bowling by both teams was crap but it did allow for great scores. As a Saffa, I still watch it.
Not to mention all the records that were broken that day.
Nah those days bowlers were good but they just have one unlucky day today even scoring 300 to 350 is not impressive
Fortunate to watch that great match
Ridiculous!!!!!!
First time a team reaching 400+,and then the opponent successfully chasing it
And don't forgot the T20 era had just began ,the players were not used to hitting boundries constantly
SA really dismantled the strong bowling line up of Aus
This was the greatest ODI game until the 2019 world cup final.
Nah
I watched this game live from Sri Lanka. After Australia scored 434 I turned it off and said the game is over. Buton the next day I saw SA won the game on criicinfo. My jaw literally dropped and triple checked the result in multiple sites to make sure it's true.
The world cup final of 2019 should be in this list
ikr
SA EPIC WIN🔥
I had seen this match live on TV. and I do remember I watched it from 46th over of Aussie innings. Waking up that night chori chori from parents for this match was worthy
Still remeber the night!!! I was in 6th class!!! 😄😅
Now you are third class haha
Still it was amazing and hard to believe they chased that
I still remember
Friends told me this stuff in evening
It was hard to believe
It's the best ODI match in history of cricket.
You know why South Africa never won a world Cup? They won a thing bigger than the world Cup.
Perhaps that was the best ODI match
I will never forgive Nathen Bracken for dropping the catch of Gibbs.
Now England have smashed the record in odi run scoring against Australia
I remember going to bed that night and waking up and just saying ARE YOU KIDDING ME! when I seen the score
I remember that day, i was playing cricket and we lost the ball in the swamp. So i went with my friends to get a new ball from the store and i remember storekeeper telling me about the game, we all started laughing at him and i even said that it must have been a test cricket or may be somebody was playing that game on a playstation.
Gibbs was on 175 at the 32nd over just imagine if he stayed in the middle until the end
Triple century
I keep watching this to remind myself but,I don't everytine people say it can't be done. biggest Life Lesson.
what a day that was. i watched the whole part of the game till i had to leave to a mates sons birthday party..i said who on earth planned this party today? i was furious. when i saw Gibbs come out i saw it in his eyes....oh s....t thought. he is gone in a few balls...could see the alcohol in his eyes...but man when he started hitting....i felt it in my bones....there is now a small chance with him and Smith. the end was more surprising....and showed how much respect even Australia had for Gibbs. they gave Ponting the man of the match award. he offered to share it with Gibbs, despite Ponting bowlling as well,he felt Gibbs knocking that 175 was good enough for him to share the award. and he knew he drunk when he played..making it more impressive.
Guys please upload the video no 11 in this series as soon as possible, awaiting eagerly
I saw in the news paper 'ulaga sathanaiyai minjia ulaga sathanai'
It was the same ground where 2003 final is played. Had Sachin stayed, with shewag ganguly dravud and yuvi it would have been a piece of cake
I think no side of any time could have even envisioned to have chased this mammoth total like this SA unit, not even the prime Aussie squad.
While the SA was chasing, Me and the boys were dancing and shouting like crazy. Woah!
South africa always loves to play against australia
Lucky one i watched live
