- In honour of the first performance of La Traviata on march 6, 1853, here is an exceptional rendering of Violetta's first act aria performed by Magda Olivero. The film was recorded in 1964 in Naples in the usual manner of the time: it was synchronized with an already existing audio recording. In this case, a studio recording of Violetta's aria was used, it was recorded on August 7, 1940 in Torino with the Orchestra Sinfonica dell' EIAR, the tenor was Muzio Giovagnoli and the conductor Ugo Tansini.
In the sixties The Italian music magazine Discoteca made a contest for all the existing recordings of È strano!...Ah, fors'è lui...Sempre libera" from Tetrazzini, Zeani, Callas, Tebaldi, Scotto, Sutherland, Caballe…to all other sopranos who's names would be too long to enumerate, to summarize: everyone who ever sang and recorded the aria had a chance. To the surprise of many, Magda Olivero won the coveted prize of the best interpretation of the aria before all her soprano colleagues. And I’m sure this is still very valid today.
In onore della prima rappresentazione della Traviata il 6 marzo 1853, ecco un'eccezionale resa della scena e dell'aria del primo atto di Violetta eseguita da Magda Olivero. Il film è stato registrato nel 1964 a Napoli nel solito modo dell'epoca: è stato sincronizzato con una registrazione audio già esistente. In questo caso è stata utilizzata una registrazione in studio dell'aria di Violetta, registrata il 7 agosto 1940 a Torino con l'Orchestra Sinfonica dell'EIAR, il tenore era Muzio Giovagnoli e il direttore Ugo Tansini.
Negli anni Sessanta la rivista Discoteca fece un concorso per tutte le registrazioni esistenti di È strano!...Ah, fors'è lui...Sempre libera" da Tetrazzini, Zeani, Callas, Tebaldi, Scotto, Sutherland, Caballe...a tutti gli altri soprani che sarebbe troppo lungo enumerare, per riassumere: tutti quelli che hanno cantato e registrato l'aria avevano una possibilità. Con sorpresa di molti, Magda Olivero vinse l'ambito premio della migliore interpretazione dell'aria davanti a tutti i suoi colleghi soprani. E sono sicuro che questo vale ancora oggi.
Grandissima immensa Madame Olivieri pensate ha cantato fino a 95 anni il Panis angelicus nella chiesa del suo paese sempre con voce cristallina e perfettamente intonata!! Diva in assoluto del virtuosismo e coloritura! Nessuna più come lei

Grazie! I have never come to learn of Magda, until now. By the black/white film and the sound production of her time, I am stunned in ALL her PERFECTION. ABSOLUTA DIVA. I have held Caballe in such high admiration. I wonder how Caballe had reflected on Olivera's voice, beside her high regard of Callas. How Magda Olivera fell behind the recognition of Tebaldi and Callas reminds me how the Golden Age of Opera with Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Aragull, and the many tenors along this extraordinary 'Age of the Opera' remained in such esteemed demand? The FINE ARTS did LAUNCH in 60's to 80's as we never expected. Magda Olivera would have been great color to add to the the GALAS at the time, that were WELL FUNDED. She was truly an extraordinary DIVA. Her candle is still lighting...❤

Esecuzione ed interpretazione superlative, dotate di una carica elettrica eccezionale, con un disinvolto, artistico, e perfetto controllo dei virtuosismi, fino alle incredibili messe di voce capaci di originare un suono filato prima in crescendo, poi in diminuendo, ed infine in crescendo di nuovo, su un' unica nota.
Stupendo il sopracuto finale, con uno squillo incredibile....ma è soprattutto la grande varietà di colori e di accenti a rendere questa interpretazione idiomatica e perfettamente calzante al ruolo...

Ind dieser Arie können nur Montserrat Cabale und Maria Callas in der gleichen Liga spielen und singen alle anderen die durchaus ihre hohen Qualitäten haben erreichen nicht das jubelnde freudige als auch denn Klang der Tragödie die da über Violeta kommen wird . Nur in der Darstellung von Olivero, Callas und Cabale ist ein fasst vollkommenes Portrait dieser hybriden Rolle zu erkennen. Bravo !!!!!!
Weder bei der Callas noch bei Montserrat Cabale habe ich diese jubelende freudige Kraft so perfect heraus gehört. Auch die Coloraturo hörte ich nur bei Magda Olivero in dieser Qualität. Unglaublich schön, ein magisches Erlebnis.

What I find incredible is that without really much effort she can sing with such a powerful loud voice, I noticed that at many singers. They don’t even open their mouth much and yet their voice can break a glass!

Así es, Denis. Magda Olivero tenía todo, habiendo vivido 102 años, fue ignorada por los directores de orquesta y de los teatros, como por los críticos y periodistas. Su Adriana Lecouvreur, como su Tosca y Violeta, son antologicas. Por suerte existen grabaciones directas en el teatro, como su interpretación de Adriana Lecouvreur completa. Francesco Ciléa la admiraba y le pidió que interpretara su Adriana, que fue estrenada por la soprano Angelica Pandolifini, quien tenia un timbre lírico y delicado similar al de Alicia Albanese. En el aria Io son l´umille ancella (Soy la humilde servidora), que también la dejó grabada la Pandolfini, la Olivero deja atrás a la Callas y a la Tebaldi, con su messa di voce (entonación fuerte que luego se esfuma) en esta aria, una de las más difíciles para sopranos por la incomidad del agudo final, que en la mayoría de los casos no lo pueden sostener con la amplitud de respiración (fiato) y las inflexiones que lo hace la Olivero. En vivo, también dejó grabada en el teatro y en el estudio, Fedora, también de Ciléa, con di Stefano y del Monaco, respectivamente, dos tenores que en estas versiones hacen gala de su belleza y expresión vocal (di Stefano) y de su potencia y juventud vocal (del Monaco). Sin negarles a la Callas y la Tebaldi sus méritos, Magda Olivero merece un lugar a la par de las mejores sopranos de la historia. Saludos,

How come she isn’t a world famous superstar like the Callas?
Probably because when the record companies started marketing opera starts in the fifties, like Callas and Tebaldi, Olivero was a star of the thirties and had by then taken a 10-year sabbatical. When she returned to the stage in the early fifties, she was treated as a has-been by the record companies so, she decided to sing sporadically through Italy without an agent. Her incredible technique permitted her to out-sing Callas and Tebaldi and still sing Tosca with Pavarotti in 1979, aged 69. Altogether, she spanned 3 generations of tenors and sang with Gigli, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Corelli, Domingo and Pavarotti. But now, with the help of the internet and especially with UA-cam, things have changed. There is a UA-cam channel entirely dedicated to her, "The Magda Olivero Archives" where one can find over 90 videos offering some of her legendary performances from 1938 to 2009.

She can sing rings around Callas! Tebaldi had a more naturally beautiful tone, but her acting was negligible at best!
@@DavidAsset78. If I hired Olivero to perform with Mario del Monaco or Corelli in Metropolitan Opera then Callas probably would kill me. Callas was very jealous. I like Callas and I keep many of her recordings in my private collection, but you cannot focus on one singer only. There were couple of very fine Italian girls on stage at those times. Also, the true is that I do not follow any present artist. I do not even care who sings at the MET now.

Para sorpresa de muchos, Magda Olivero ganó el codiciado premio de la mejor interpretación del aria ante todas sus colegas sopranos. Y estoy seguro de que esto sigue siendo muy válido hoy en día.

Independientemente de esto, hay referencias en esa opera, cantantes grandiosas, excelentes actrices y mujeres con clase: Callas, Scotto, kabaivanska, Beverly sills, Olivero, Anna Moffo. Cualquiera cantante que se respete acude a ellas. El comercio de las artes hace que cualquiera cante hoy lo que se le ocurra y lamentablemente, las partituras tienen exigencias vocales, que dada la exclusividad de la voz humana, no todos y todas cumplen.

Incredibile, vero? Magda Olivero è prima di tutto una grande artista a cui capita di cantare ruoli veristi. Tra l'altro, la risata a cascata sulle note può essere "démodé" oggi, ma in realtà era "à la mode" nel 1940, quando l'attrice registrò l'aria.
Magda non ha mai saputo cosa fosse la coloratura ma l'intelligenza artistica...Dotata di mezzi vocali modesti e di un vibrato strettissimo, ne ha fatto il suo punto di forza, dando significato ad ogni sillaba e creando un personaggio agli antipodi callasiani...

Giustamente Rodolfo Celletti osservava che Magda Olivero sapeva rendere la “frenesia” dei malati di tisi. Straordinaria, perfetta con questi rapidi e convulsi che rendono perfettamente lo stato d’animo nevrotico e concitato di Violetta
Si tende a dimenticare che Magda Olivero, più spesso associata ad Adriana Lecouvreur, è stata una delle grandi Violette, ruolo che ha cantato più spesso della Callas e della Tebaldi. Ha cantato Violetta sul palco 102 volte, la prima volta nel 1938 e l'ultima nel 1959. Nessun altro soprano conosciuto ha mai cantato l'impegnativo ruolo di Violetta per un periodo così lungo, più di 20 anni.

As an operatic coloratura, I can say that Ms. Olivera preserved her voice by a light, high placement over the years. She dubbed her voice for this film, but all the same, she had no strain in the voice. One might wish for a more sustained vibrato, but she astounds us with her messa di voce!

@@angelamalek She is not known for her coloratura repertoire. She sang a few high tessitura roles in the thirties, apart from La Traviata, the only role she sang till 1959, for 21 years. Do listen to that 1969 Recital I recommended.

She started as a real coloratura!
Magda Olivero, sempre riconosciuta come Adriana Lecouvreur, come artista del Verismo in musica, riesce a fare benissimo questa aria, tipicamente nelle corde di un soprano leggero che abbia facilità nel registro acuto e riesca bene nella coloratura. Questa aria è piena di scale, scalette, agilità e virtuosismi...e sentite che pianissimi aveva la Olivero e anche come fa bene la risata che, purtroppo, adesso non usano piú. Riusciva cosí bene in "È strano...follie..." Leyla Gencer, che sappiamo benissimo quale magnifico soprano sia stata, soprattutto nel ruolo di Violetta. Capiamo, allora, benissimo perché hanno dato alla Olivero il disco d'oro per Traviata. É stupenda, anche nella interpretazione, dal punto di vista scenico...impareggiabile!

La Olivero ha cantato, per la Rai, questa Traviata, negli Anni Sessanta, e poi Tosca, negli Anni Sessanta. Purtroppo, le registrazioni complete delle recite sono introvabili, che peccato.

@@desperatehell Quello che bisogna capire di questo video è che in quest'aria del primo atto, la parte cinematografica è stata realizzata separatamente da quella audio, a 16 anni di distanza l'una dall'altra.
Il film (solo l'aria, non l'opera completa) è stato girato nel 1964 a Napoli, ma la "soundtrack" che è stata utilizzata in "Lip Sync" proviene da una registrazione audio dell'aria molto precedente fatta il 7 agosto 1940 a Torino con l'Orchestra Sinfonica dell'EIAR, il tenore era Muzio Giovagnoli e il direttore Ugo Tansini. È più chiaro?

I bet you heard every note in the theatre. Somewhere along the line high harmonics got cancelled out in favour of more warmth and weight in the middle. The result? No-one singing today gets to polish off the scales or has the dynamic control across the whole range shown here. And as a consequence you lose an essential part of Violetta's character: her devil-may-care abandon. And without that you lose the contrast with what follows.
