Rudd donated his paycheck from this race to the Mike Rich family
I remember this well. I was told he was a voluntary member and the last thing he asked at the scene was if Bill still had a chance to win the race. He had to continue but cannot imagine how hard it was for Bill to continue out on the track.
I want to add that no matter what it looks like , Ill never believe Ricky nor any driver would have intentionally slid into Bills car and cannot believe anyone would believe much less voice that it happened intentionally.
It was a terrible , tragic " accident " nothing more.
this is when nascar was awesome!!! keep the vintage media coming !!!! thank you
R I P TO THAT MAN DIDNT SEE IT COMING OMG!!
weird thing to say regarding a video whose main focus is of a guy being crushed to death but you do you
@@mono-no-aware.Lem.very weird
I was at that race in the infield.. recording on my VCR back at home.. got home & watched it...
I still have the VHS tape
Two years in a row where tragedy came in Atlanta. What a shame.
Thank you Dr Punch for dropping the mic and helping. This is not the only time that he helped the injured at the racetrack. Some of the television crews would have push the medical team out of the way to get a better picture.
This is why pit road speed limits were developed, and they needed to be. This was an awful accident, nothing more. Of course Rudd didn't do it on purpose. If he wanted to run someone over he could've just plowed through them many different ways other than "Maybe" Hitting someone spinning out like he did. Ridiculous to think anything else. He has to live with this everyday. So does Bill.
Rudds rear brakes locked up.. i was there that day
RIP, it’s crazy it took this happening for pit road speed limits
My nephew is rear tire changer on a well known driver’s team. I think about the possibility of this happening again every race.
RIP Michael Rich
Pit road crash 21:50
I Feel So Bad For Ricky Rudd That Was Involved In Two Of The Scariest, And Innovating Changes On Pit Road In NASCAR Racing, Which Was Homestead-Miami Speedway In 2001 Where His Three Crew Members Were Knocked Down By Ward Burton, And Implemented Helmet, And Paddings During A Pit Stop.
To even imply this was done on purpose is asinine.

RIP
They should do competition yellows
Ricky Rudd definitely didn’t mean to do that intentionally….if he wanted to do it intentionally….he would’ve done what Tony Stewart did…..sad but true!
it was driver fault
No it was NASCARs for not having any kind of pit road safety regulations at the time. Don't try to blame this on someone who was working within the rules he was handed
@@KellieLeigh48 Ricky came in fast, had probably been running more LF brake on the track so he cranked in some rear so he could stop better on pit Rd, lost control and that's all there is to it.
This incident brought about the pit road speed limit. Yes nascar was reactive then instead of proactive.
Whoa ! Big Guy, I was at that race and it wasn't Rudds fault. There was no speed limit on pit road at that time. Every driver always came in hot. Rudd had no way of knowing his car was on top of the tire changer. After he made contact with Bill's car chaos broke out and everybody was confused as to what to do. You can see that for yourself in the replay. I'm sure it affected Ricky as well as Bill even though Mike and Bill were good friends
@andyanglin390 correct. Dude's not gonna tell me I'm wrong when I'm not. Lol. Literally he's running the same speed as everyone else there 🙄
Things were way different back in these days and on this day Blairsville ga lost a well respected man his family still lives in Blairsville and the family he left behind . You never know what gonna happen when you go racing and ignorant folks like yourself who weren't around in these days of racing should do your research before you let your fingers type on something you really don't know anything about
haha dave marcis sucked
Men’s hair was horrible
I remember that wreck at Atlanta motor speedway! Ricky Rudd should have been ejected for the track right then ! That was uncalled for what he did ! Cant say he didn't know what he done ! Knowing that the crews are on pit row and and coming in later then anyone else and loose control my ass. He body slammed the car spinning on pit row with Michael on his knees and removing the rear tire and get slammed from behind in between the cars and then spins the tires with him crushed at both wheels. Why nascar let him race after that is so disgusting. That's before the rules of head protection for the crew members over the wall. But that move wouldn't have help Micheal even if he was wearing a helmet against 3600 pounds pinned and slammed from behind. Never forget that day !!!
