The explosion also knocked another guy to the ground. You can see him get up off the ground maybe six to eight feet left of where people are starting to circle around Owens. Then he staggers off to the right past the commotion.
Most Folk's don't know, but Randy was Miss Lynda's little brother & by many year's her junior. Randy was almost like another Son to Richard & was actually Kyle's best friend, almost like brother's were those two, just a year apart in age. Truly a dark day for the Petty Family 🙏
i didnt know much about it except Kyle and Him were good friends such a weird accident. Kyle has had one hell of a ride on motorsports with losing people.

I was only 3 years old so i dont remember much. I do remember seeing Irwins car on its roof but nothing else really. 2000-2001 was one of the most ridiculously sad periods i think anyone alive especially into motorsport would say probably is the most in our lifetime. Still 22 years or so later and its still something i see and read about often.

What's wrong baby, what's happened??" Crazy how attached we Race fan's can become to our favorite driver's 😞

No idea as to if he was okay or not terrified me i didnt sleep until the Sun came up. Constantly Refreshing my phone PRAYING for an update or anything i could get for knowledge of it all. I still to this day avoid watching that wreck even though i know he was pretty much unharmed in it. Trying to find a new favorite is tough for me for sure. Hope Newman can find a ride again but doesnt look likely.
My older brothers took me and my twin brother to see this race we were 16. My twin was looking through the binoculars and said I just saw a guy flying up into the air. Of course I didn't believe him !
I remember watching this live.... I also remember a tire inflating accident using the pit road airtank that blew up a tire & the rim traveled in air & hurt/killed at least 1 person.
Tank broke from too much air im guessing blowing it shot up in the air....i was too young to remember....as racer an car painter every time i feel one of those tire air tanks it makes me nervous guys have told me the guage is what u should be aware of sometimes tjey blow...RIP R O.....i know the petty racing evrryone was tight mostly all family...an friends..dang that tank got high

it's been a while since i've seen one but there used to be fire extinguishers that were full of water and pressurized by air. we used them years ago when welding. a guy, a fire watchman, would stand by with those tanks while we were welding. also, they were probably around 5 gallons or less. they were the size of todays C02 and powder extinguishers. i just googled them, they are still in use today.

As I recall it was also during this same race that Tiny Lund was killed in an accident. T-Boned & the side bar of the roll cage crushed him.
I think that was the 2nd race in summer of 1975 at Talladega, when Tiny Lund got killed, this was the spring race 1st race of the year for Talladega.
