In my neighborhood we had mostly incandescent street lamps well into the mid 1980's with a few mercury vapor lamps here and there.. Then around 1986 they changed them all out for HP Sodium. I liked the incandescents and the sodiums. They both had a warm relaxing glow that looked awesome silhouetted against the sky on a clear evening. Then a couple years ago came the LED fixtures. Now the entire city is all LED all the way. I don;t like the LED's all that much. The light seems harsh, void and has a nasty glare. They remind me somewhat of the old mercury vapours but with lower light temp and a harder glare. I kind of miss the old HP Sodiums and incandescents.

They put LED lights in our block and now where getting them eliminated all together we rather just go dark
Still was interesting they would switch from MV to HPS around 1980
I like the old mercury vapor or sodium lights the style are beautiful better than the led lamps

These will eventually cost more to service than the original fixtures. And there is the added complexity and reliability issues with LED drivers. I'd rather stick with my HID.

After 5 years in Newmarket, Canada (pop 90 000) with frigid cold winters and moderately hot summers, only a few failures of LED street lights. Although store signage has been strobing away like a night club during December to March.

Nice!! Why isn´t the opening of this fixture on top? It is much easier working from the top than from the bottom.
I also mounted such fixtures and it is puzzling why a manufacturer doesn´t make more easy fixing luminaires.
it's called planned obsolescence. it means that the manufacture of the streetlights can make more money selling new units that fail.

The Blue cup is a sensor that turns the light off when there is a sun light above certain level
It sense the Sun light level and turns off or on the main Street light

Its a dusk-dawn sensor. Some are grey, some are clear. All do the same thing - turns on the lamp when it gets dark, and off again when it gets bright outside.
Not all road lights have them, as some setups have multiple road lamps controlled by one master sensor, usually near the same transformer that feeds that group of lamps on the power pole.
When these get dirty or fail, that is when you will see a road light on even during the day. Sparkies tend to call this phenomenon "day burners"
