- Hi everyone and welcome back to my channel and to this week's series of "LUCY CANNOT SEE A STRIDE!"
In this vlog I head to my local venue for a show jumping lesson with my trainer Justine Ward, to try and iron out the creases (I am basically a linen shirt at the moment). I have left all the footage unedited and raw so you can see and hear a complete real version of our turbulent training.
Anyway, despite the car crash, we had fun and we live to jump another day!

Really admire the way you own up to things. Some people would blame the horse. Sometimes you just think grrrrr when this happens i used to. Then i used to get my knickers in a twist and make things worse. Then the next time i jumped it would be fine. Xx

It’s probably so hard to see a stride on her when she’s rushing - I admire what a good rider you are, and she’s just lovely, of course!
I used to ride a lovely large warmblood, I could see a stride from a mile away on him! The thing with Laragh is she’s rather unpredictable 😂 But it’s all learning. I’ve definitely got better stickability for it! Thanks for watching 🙏
You are very brave, Lucy. It can't be easy to put out works-in-progress; so big kudos for doing that. I think everyone learns a lot from watching you and Laragh. And, you are a much better rider than you think -- that jump run through was well-sat for sure. And, after each round, there was big improvement for both of you. Really clever of you to book a couple of lessons in a row too. I'm sure both of you will feel the improvements next time you go to show. I'm looking forward to seeing your trainer ride Laragh and give comments from that pov, as I agree with you, that she is a tough ride; which of course, we sometimes appreciate, just not all the time I guess. Always love to see pretty Bonnie, even if she's having a wee. She is so darn cute. Have faith in yourself -- you're really good at this.

Thank you for sharing this Lucy! My mare that I had for 3 years was exactly the same as Laraghlee and I also use to freeze and take my leg off. I so appreciate your trainer's advice, and cannot wait to see her ride her and the knowledge she brings!

It's lovely to see a video of you learning with laragh. She's one strong girl and you do an amazing job with her. Any vlog is a vlog worth watching. Would love both. You'll get there. I couldn't see strides for years and one day it just clicked.
Retrospective, eh. I thought I had seen them all but guess not. What a talented rider you are! I knew you were good and watching this confirms it.
I think so many of us have had days like this and its so great that you're open to sharing it with everyone.
I had a couple horses that were like this. the one was an ex-polo pony who would just go full-tilt at any jump I showed her and the other was an OTTB who was so strong and would just lean into me in the same way that Laraghlee seems to.
What really helped me with seeing better strides was just putting two poles on the ground at about 5/6 strides apart and then just cantering between them and working on adjustability, so adding a stride or taking one away.

It seems as if she thrives off a more impulsive canter and it's good to see the confidence improving in your showjumping partnership. Onwards and upwards from here and thank you for showing the reality of riding horses and the ups and downs we all experience :)
Is Laura a High Blower with that unusual noise she makes breathing as she's working?
I had an Appaloosa who sounded the same when he worked, and that's what the vet called him. A High Blower. He had a birth defect of a little hole in the septum, the skin and cartilage barrier between a horse's nostrils. He sounded like a freight train when he was breathing heavy, but there wasn't a thing wrong with him.
Made for very interesting vet checks during endurance competitions for vets that were unfamiliar with the condition. They would think I had ridden him too hard and broken his wind. Hehehe.
I still miss that crazy old horse. He was my best endurance horse ever. Could go hard all day with a few water breaks and hardly break a sweat! He lived till he was almost 40, and for a 17HH horse, that said alot about how well he was cared for.

Lucy. I’d go back to the drawing board. Ground work. Half halts bend. Get her listening. Then grids. Make her stretch for a stride. She’s chipping in all the time. And you’ll get refusal after refusal as she can’t get out over a big fence from the bottom of it. And your hands. Get back your independent seat where you can give her head over a fence.
We do a lot of all you have mentioned above! Sometimes chipping in isn’t the worst thing, it’s better than going off a flyer- especially at the level we are at. She’s never been one to go off a long one, it’s either bang on, or chip in!
@@footluceeventing yup and there’s the problem. You can’t get bang on all the time. Occasionally a chip will save you but taking a fence out of the stride you have is the way to go. I just speak from a point of her being mine and what I would do. Stronger leg on and ask for the stretch, I may even go back to loose jumping too so she gets freed up in the head, neck and back. But it will be great to see your trainer on her. It’ll give more guidance too. Love the vlog and really like the mare.

Heck yes, house vlog and also would love to see your trainer ride. I really thought what was going on with Lemme was the way I ride but after having my trainer ride him she was feeling exactly what I was feeling. So it really wasn't me or my riding. I had a visit from the vet we figured out that he had arthritis in his right hock. I got it injected and started him on IM joint supplement. Now he feels better than he ever has. 😁 short story long...haha I think having your trainer will be a fun and definitely helpful video. 🤣😂

Great vlog Lucy. First, congrats on new home! Would love to see a tour! Definitely would like to see next training session with Justine! Good that she'll ride Laragh. I can still hear my instructor, Mr. King, some 50 years ago, "leg, leg, leg!,....keep his head up!, leg!" It's not always easy! One's love of the sport and our equine partner keeps us striving for better though. Hang in there. Thank you for sharing the good times and the rough times; a microcosm of life is it not? I really felt for you watching this! I definitely know that frustrating feeling when you have one of those lessons. It’s so hard when you KNOW what you need to be doing differently but your mind and body don’t seem to be cooperating! Its so hard not to get stuck in a rut mentally when you’re having a day like that. For what it’s worth, you’re a really lovely rider and I don’t think Laragh always makes things easy for you and helps you out so don’t beat yourself up. Also, it’s reassuring to watch videos like this and realise, you know what, we all have those days! Chin up, there were some lovely moments in there. X

I also have quite a bulldozer and I can never see a stride, however I am slowly learning it never looks quite as bad as it feels. Would love to see your trainer vs you riding the lovely Laragh

Good, knowledgeable vlog Lucy! I just got back on a few months ago and am having very similar issues with the TB I am now riding - they're deceptively forward. Our first instinct is to hold TIGHT and whoa but in reality, per your trainer, they'll win that battle every single time. It's so hard! But it's great to see and learn from.

Your brave to put this out there. I've been following from afar for a while.
I have had my SJ problems. For me the best way to work around the problem has been setting up related distances with poles and incorporating them into my everyday riding .
Example
4 poles on a 20m circle works for dressage and jumping rhythm. Adding and taking out a stride gets you thinking about your canter .
You get so relaxed and confident doing this that when you get round to jumping the height is not a problem
Don't over analyse things. You have proven you can do this. You will get back to where you were , ready to look for more

We all get days like this!! Dont be disheartened. I have gone through phases for several weeks where I just am completely useless at counting strides and then for no reason at all one day ill get out of bed and I can count strides again.
When I am having these bad days I try to ride a lot shorter and more upright strides, really sit back and then you can always push and lengthen into a fence. Better that way round than tucking in a mini stride in my experience.
Ive had so many lessons like this, so you are not alone!! Just keep going and dont be disheartened! Sending good jumping vibes!! 😂👍❤

I've had my girl 9years and I still struggle with her she's a TB and very hot and forward. She pulls on the forehand and will steam ahead and I struggle to keep her with me without feeling like I'm pulling her face off. So frustrated sometimes trying to go back to basics to get her listening to me. She is better schooling but is a nightmare sometimes on hack. Your doing a fab job.xx
Keep at it! Sounds like you’re doing a great job, when a lot of people would just give up. I recently did a programme on Horse & Country TV called ‘Back to Basics’, not sure where in the world you are but they stream Internationally- I did some great exercises that really helped us!

This could literally be me and my horse. My instructor says the same, leg off the corner! She also tells me to keep riding straight, straight at the fence and straight away from the fence. Good luck for your next event :)

Firstly I love you and all of your vlogs! I would definitely have your trainer get on her and see how she goes, but grid work would be super for her, I have this exact same issue with my horse, I struggle to see a stride, and I have a bounce to a one stride oxer and it helps keep him on his hind end and lift his front end without having to worry about missing a stride. Also try poles and shortening and lengthening between them ☺️🇦🇺
Thank you! I know she’ll be fab on her, when I can’t see my strides I just sit there like a lemon- something that Justine definitely does not do! Yes I love grid work, we try and do bits here and there but she’s straight as a die through grids. Will definitely do more poles!

Lucy, I feel your frustration. Just a thought and only to offer a suggestion which you can take or leave :) This is not easy for you and Laraghlee. I'm wondering if it would be worth doing a controlled jump (barriers etc) with no reigns and no stirrups. So you practice "speaking" to Laraghlee with your seat for each jump. Will also perhaps help you release her to jump freely with her head. I know its not easy, but I remember my instructor making me do this. It was very helpful.

I’d love to see your trainer ride Laragh - I bet it’s not as easy as she thinks! 😏 With respect to your trainer, she could be giving you more help to see a stride rather than when you said “I saw one that time!” just saying “Well, see one every time then!” 😂🤪 It seems to me that when you’re on the right stride you know you’re right, but when you’re not you’re finding it hard to know whether you need to lengthen or shorten. Not easy on a horse like Laragh who likes to chip in! There are tons of exercises Justine could give you to find your rhythm - like making the fences smaller and getting you to count your canter strides into the fence. I remember Pippa Funnell saying you are never more than half a stride out, which is absolutely true!

Honestly I wouldn't say that the issues are all your fault. She looks like a complicated ride and she does not give you any freebies. There seemed to be multiple times where there was a perfectly reasonable "long" spot (not even that long) where she could have taken off but she decided to throw in a tiny chip stride. Seems to me that she really prefers that super close distance and does not like to really push off for a longer stride. It definitely makes it difficult for you as the rider to make it feel like you're not seeing the spot when you really are and she's not taking it! Then when she did actually take a longer spot, it left you behind because I think you were expecting her to chip in. And when you're constantly getting chips it's hard to commit to a distance and keep your leg on.
I'm so tense just listening to the yelling and I can't even tell what she's saying. I would be a wreck in a lesson! Meaning, I don't know how you guys all do it. Go you!

From watching all of your vlogs, this just seems so unlike you and Laragh! I’ve always been so impressed with your riding! It looks like she’s refusing to jump at all long and is putting in a half stride. If she can’t fit that small stride in, she refuses. It makes me wonder about a suspensory issue, since suspensories gradually break down/tear without obvious lameness and then one day they finally break down and you have a lame horse. It’s a cumulative injury. Really looking forward to your trainer riding because that’ll give you a lot of info. Thanks for sharing the good and the bad! Also looking forward to the house tour!
Ah, well you see she very very rarely chooses to put in a longy in the show jumping, we’ll either be bang on, or she’ll chip in, it’s just the way she is! She’s had a full lameness work up not that long ago, so I’m not worried about that 😊 I just had an off day, you’ll see she’ll fly when my trainer gets on- because she can see a stride 😂

Thank you Lucy. I’m a non horsey person who would like to understand what ‘seeing a stride’ means. Does is mean picking your take-off location, and leading Laragh to that exact position without slowing down?
Yes - seeing a stride means finding a good take off spot, and then being able to gauge your horse's stride and adjust to that point (either lengthening or shortening to that point as needed).

I got three minutes into this video and started whining inwardly because I haven't been able to ride in four weeks because literally EVERY weekend has been raining or the ground is mud. The weekdays are fine, sunny, dry - but every weekend without fail has been pouring. 😣 I know it's winter but this is Australia people! Where are the droughts when you need them??

Learn to lengthen and shorten your stride between fences that will make a big difference,
We’ve done lots of work on this on the flat, but it’s knowing when to do apply to a fence I sometimes struggle with.. work in progress! 😂
Go down to basics, thats healthy for professionals too - when you can slower and lengthen your strides there, put the poles up again. Nice try
Lucy have you ever tried different bits? I know people can be funny when you start mentioning gags and such but used correctly they do no more harm than hanging an a snaffle. Sometimes it looks like you are fighting laughlee and not enjoying yourself, and that is not what we do it for. Please don’t take this the wrong way…just throwing out some ideas….
Hi Sarah, yes I have! The one she’s in at the moment is actually the best she’s had for a while, it’s a universal comfy mouth. She’s not great in gags because too much pressure and she will stop ✋🏻 she’s a sensitive soul… but an excitable one! Thanks for watching 💙

To put it bluntly (sorry!) I’m disappointed in your trainer, she gives you very little guidance between fences (which I know you know is where things tend to start going wrong and that applies to us all!) and she doesn’t appear to instil much confidence in you. Plus, my god, did she drill you both?! I don’t think I’ve ever in my life jumped that many fences in a lesson and I’ve been competing some 30 years. In my no doubt unwelcome opinion (again - sorry!) she is a bit stuck for how to help you and hoping you can string a few decent fences together before letting you finish on a positive... I wonder if the partnership might be a bit stale and it’s time for a fresh pair of eyes on the ground and a different approach. I really mean no disrespect at all, just a fellow eventer wishing better for one of her kind! I think you ride her absolutely beautifully.

The horse is a dónkey...not a jumper. I m a horse trainer. Buy a real horse and enjoy the jumping
