  • The $500 Pentax 17 is a new 35mm film camera from Pentax. It is a vey capable point and shoot camera that comes with up to a three year warranty. But don't let those dials fool you, this camera's largest flaw is it's lack of user control.

    May I suggest that you and David Imel make a podcast or some kind of discussion series about Cameras - digital, film, smartphone - and get a bit into the weeds of things like the new Halide camera app with no processing mode, or the evolution of smartphone cameras through the years, it would help us understand how to better use our phone cameras

    I’ve been loving my Pentax 17. I bought it mostly for reason 1, so Pentax will keep making them. But it’s turned out to just be a super enjoyable camera and produces better results than I expected!

  • @thebitterfig9903
    @thebitterfig9903 24 дні тому +3

    All in all, I think the 17 is a really fun camera to use, a fantastic "casual" camera for a more experienced photographer.
    I have cameras with all sorts of full control. I have or had two fully auto point and shoots, and the last time I ran a roll of film through one it was almost painful. The grinding motors, the autofocus that alienates me from the process, the horrible grip. This feels like a great hybrid. Just enough control to feel hands-on (zone focus and program-vs-bokeh goes a long way, plus the winder, and exposure compensation for when I'm dealing with backlighting), but auto enough that the whole process is light and breezy. Half frame makes sense since even full frame doesn't come close in pure IQ to the digital cameras I have, so might as well get more shots. Huge grip for a camera this small, and the handling is just nice. And the little detail I love: the viewfinder is directly over the lens, the centers of each directly aligned. If I want something in the middle of the frame, it's going to be in the middle of the frame--parallax is well managed for practical use. Overall, if I'm shooting 135 film, I think I'd rather be shooting this than an SLR (full mechanical, aperture priority, or autofocus). If I want to deal with metering and precise focusing and everything, I'd rather be shooting 120. There's some double-exposure experiments I want to try with my Nikon FM, but mostly I'd rather shoot either the 17 or digital.
    But after all that praise, is it worth it? Well, I don't think it's unfairly priced. I think $500 about what one of these ought to cost, given materials and development and so forth. But it's still a lot of money, and there are a lot of ways to take good pictures (particularly once you have experience in sourcing used cameras). I had alternative cameras I could have used. There's no doubt a lot of places $500 could have taken a camera I already owned. I don't regret buying it at all, and it's been fun, but I also understand that it's not cheap.

    Great video Becca. Its a nice looking camera, and I am all for new analogue snappers getting made, so good on Pentax for doing it, but the cost is the main issue here, and it's a big problem. You could get 10 good half frame cameras from ebay for this money, or 25 nice point and shoot auto focus 35mm full frame cameras. Film can be expensive, but you could buy a really nice point and shoot for $50, then 100 rolls of film for the price of this camera, it doesn't make sense to buy this. Even if you bought used cameras and they broke every 6 months (which I cannot imagine anyone is that unlucky) you could still just buy a replacement each time and have loads of money left over after the three years the warranty lasts on this camera.

    Even with the 3 year warranty, $500 is still too much for it. There are $80 Olympus Pen cameras that are solid and in very good condition on eBay. Or even the $20 ones from Buyee (they're from Yahoo Japan, high quality control and cheap prices, as many things from Japan are). Worst case scenario; they break every year, and it's still $260 cheaper than the 17. But cameras bought from Japan can last a very long time.
    Love your video btw! The pacing is smooth and it's very enjoyable to watch!

    An extremely automated film camera made a lot of sense when the main alternative was an extremely manual film camera and most people just wanted to take pictures.
    Hard to imagine that most people buying a film camera want the camera making all the decisions for them.

    Pentax 17 may be a bit expensive, but people were buying cameras like Pentax K1000 or Canon AE1 for over 200 or 300 hundreds of dollars without a complain.
    For all the folks planning on buying this camera, Pentax made it easy to be repaired. So no worries even when the warranty expire, there will always be someone who can fix if some issues occur.
    About the controls, Pentax also said target audience for this camera are the young generation who never experienced film before, and thus they made it as a half-frame camera. More photos, less spending money on buying new film which is expensive nowadays, and thus, it`s better to let the camera do the leg work for you. Once you get more comfortable with the camera, it won`t be a problem to learn the manual mode this camera offers.

    I am not the target audience for this specific camera (I am sitting next to a bunch of SLR, rangefinders and TLRs, and a bunch of chemicals to develop my own stuff, and I've been getting into darkroom work recently) but I find the fact that Pentax has developed and released this camera, and that it is successful, a very good thing for what is now a niche of analog photography

    Great beginner’s film camera. If you are getting into film, this is the way to go. Ild recommend starting in auto, and working your way up to the other settings as you get more confident. For a similar experience, Ild recommend the Lomo LC-A. For less than $500, a full frame camera with controls. Minus full auto and warranty (but it is built like a tank) as an alternative option. Nice vid!

    I don’t see that this camera is any different than any other camera (film or otherwise): shoot a lot of pictures and learn how to use it. All cameras have quirks. Be thankful that someone out there finally decided to make a new, warranted, film camera. I think you, in the end, nailed it: it’s a great point and shoot camera. It is not a Leica or a Nikon F3.

  • @VariTimo
    @VariTimo 24 дні тому +3

    The user manual is crap. Here are some pointers I’ve gathered:
    All modes, except the long exposure Moon Modes will choose 1/30th for their longest shutter speed. Even Auto when the flaw isn’t charged yet.
    1/30th at f3,5 is good enough for most film with 400 ISO or above to get an decent image or at least an image with a vibe in a lot of low light scenes.
    I shoot mine in Bokeh Mode almost all the time. Bokeh mode is the way to ensure the camera will prioritize fast shutter speeds above anything else. For what I do which I street stuff and day to day, that is great. With 400 ISO film it’ll start using faster speeds pretty quickly. And even stop down since it only goes up to 1/350th as its max shutter speed. Which is fine for pretty much all films, because the even fastest B&W films have plenty of overexposure latitude. And I shoot most things at the Small Family or Mountain focus distances. This is also what I use in low light, most of the time. Although I found Flash Off Moon Mode wasn’t doing crazy long exposure times in a lot of scenes. But it’s basically up to you whether you prioritize exposure or camera shake.
    If I don’t have time to focus or want everything to be in focus I’ll use full Auto with its hyper focal distance at a deep stop.
    That’s basically the gist for the most ambiguous modes that aren’t explained well. Moon Flash is for even exposures or light trails, and Program Flash Off is mainly for slow films when you want a deep stop but not super stoped down, you know landscapes and stuff.
    I really love the camera and how Pentax designed it and it really annoys me that they couldn’t supply a great hyper detailed user manual with ever information, anyone would ever need like they used to do with point and shoots in the past.

    Given how many excellent film cameras are available on the used market (and how many are available from reputable camera shops who will stand by their sales and make things right even though they tend to charge double the going rate) I just can't be enthusiastic about a "new" sub-par film camera that costs more than a decent digital camera. I LOVE film. I also love not being taken for a fool.
    A used Olympus Pen (of any series) costs less and is capable of better photos at the same rate (I'm absolutely IN LOVE with my Canon Diana M-2. Auto-winding FTW, even though it's not an Olympus).
    My father gifted me a Cannon AE-1 Program that was an entire year old in 1984. It cost $150 and came with the fast 50mm lens. Adjusted for inflation It would cost only $50 less than the Pentax 17, and it was (and still is) far more capable of a camera.
    Bonus points for you not conflagrating "raises the question" with "begs the question." You are a shining example of a civilized human being in that regard.

    About 20 years ago I bought a used Canonet QL17 GIII for my travel to Nepal and I shot some slides at this vacation and the camera cost me about 100 bucks. Because of the progress of digital I forgot about this camera for a few years. As I remembered it, the shutter was frozen. The repair was about 150 bucks. The battery adaptor MR-9 (for using the camera, wich meant to be used with a now forbidden mercury cell, with semiautomatic, even if you can handle it fully mechanical) was about 50 or 60 bucks.
    It’s a total of 300-310, a little more than half of this Pentax and worth every penny…

I was thinking of "borrowing" one of these for a couple of weeks (then returning it for a full refund, as long as I didn't mess it up) but after figuring out what 72 half-frame photos might cost me to scan (even at a crappy resolution) plus film plus processing: nah. I grew up shooting film, so I know it, loved it (because there was no alternative). Best for those who seek the novelty of half-frame point and shoot and, I suppose, for some, the pleasures of a simple camera. Thanks for the really nice review, I look forward to seeing more of your reviews.

    Hi Becca! So glad I found your personal channel and we get to see regular updates from you. I have a question about whether you scan the film or develop it? If it's the former, do you have any preferred method or scanner? Thanks for all the great work!

    Great review. I was introduced to this camera through another review that felt overly generous to me. I'm glad Pentax is making a new film camera in 2024, but this feels like a weird miss to me.

    Finally came around to watch this. I've been shooting film (not exclusively) for the last 2/3 years on a Nikon FM2… Which is everything I love about a film camera. It's analog to its core but it lacks an easy Focusing system. I've recently bought a Nikon F65 and it is very different from the FM2. But it focus right, and my digital era lenses work with it. I can't really justify the 500 bucks for a point and shoot, but that camera does look amazing and fun to shoot with.
    the thing i miss the most on the F65 is the crank to turn the film……

    $500 is a good price. Just think how much we spent on cameras ( inflation adjusted) for our new 1970's cameras. Probably equal to $1200 in today's dollar equivalent. Also, learn to shoot and go beyond the easy auto method. Even then, the camera Pentax 17 will only get you there a quarter of the way... But challenge yourself. Learn it. We old folks did it, so can you. By doing so you add creativity to the new image if desired, and at the very least, ownership in your end product. You hv done well, you bought a nice camera, now reach for phase 2. All doable: )...
