The best video I've seen so far of anyone who has used this little camera. It's so refreshing to see someone just using the camera, rather than having to listen to some gear-head photography bro droning on about specs and price tags.
The best pictures I've seen from it as well. Many would believe you if you told them those shots were taken on 35mm. Those desert shots are beautiful.

I applaud Pentax for taking the risk and putting out such a nice camera. At first the price seemed to high, but then I thought about how film photographers have really benefited from the second hand market and have never had to buy a new film camera. Back in the day, cameras were not cheap, we had plenty of film and labs to have them developed in, now that infostructure is gone. Things are going to cost more. $500.00 is reasonable and glad we have this today! Thanks Pentax!

Best video I have seen yet for the camera. Mine arrived yesterday and I am nearly done with the first roll. It never ceases to amaze me how toxic people are, and it was a good reminder when this camera released. This camera isn't perfect - as you said perfectly - there isn't a perfect camera. This camera is a perfect "walk around" everyday casual camera, or a second camera to cram into the bag with bigger gear (that is why I bought one...) Amazing to me how much effort people will spend to trash talk something solely because it isn't what - they - want instead of realizing what this camera actually is and rolling on with life and taking pictures.

Almost all the comments/reviews I've seen have been positive in tone, like the ones here. It's not for some people, and they state why - mostly that they don't like the 17, that it felt rather cheap, or wish the controls weren't so dumbed down. Sounds like it's perfect for you, hurrah! I personally haven't seen toxicity on such a high degree as to be amazed by how people are. Happy shooting!

@@codeyakexpeditionaires6854 My main social media for photography is Threads - and the hate on there is heavy, and it seems people are going out of their way to hate on it - as I see the same people over and over in any thread about it. I don't find it cheap feeling, and the plastic middle section is obviously designed for people to add "leather" or something similar (already companies making it.) My HiMatics and "cheaper" SLRs feel cheaper than the Pentax. Lol.

@@codeyakexpeditionaires6854 Roflmao, and what do you think could be the reason for it? Because there is no integrity. These "influencers" need to give "positive tone" of crap, else they wont get that crap. Their job is to make people feel happy to consume crap while paying a fortune of it. And they do it very well.

    • @thebitterfig9903

A B-Camera is one of my big goals for this. Pocket it along with a medium format camera, or a digital camera with a telephoto lens, and I’ve got something where I can take less weighty shots.
I really feel like casual is the right term for it. I know a lot of the toxic comments sections say “toy” but toy camera implies an indifference (if not avoidance) of image quality and exposure quality. This is not a Holga or Reto (those have a place, it’s just different). It’s hands-on enough to be interesting to a photographer, but automatic enough to keep things light. A sweet spot for a casual camera for when we don’t want to shoot 120 on a tripod and think about metering.
But yeah, it does feel like there is a lot of toxicity out there about the P17. I think a lot of it is gatekeeping. They want to feel special, and don’t want anyone who isn’t experienced enough to source and maintain a used Canon Demi or Olympus Pen to enter the world of film. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if this often takes better pictures than some vintage models, the meter is better and many old half frame were also scale focus. I think it’s less about the Pentax 17 not having the right specs for them, and more about the fact that new users can easily buy and use it.
Between this and the GRiii with the built-in diffusion filter, Ricoh/Pentax has a pair of hits. The toxic jerks can stay mad while Pentax becomes more relevant than it’s been in years.

@@thebitterfig9903 It is really funny how so many of the critics are acting like zone focus and half-frame = toy. My GS645W Fuji is Zone focus (along with many Minoltas, Leicas, etc) and it works great. I just developed my first roll from my Pentax 17 - and I am quite impressed as they turned out great. I made a couple prints (8x10) off a few of the shots and the look great as well. If so many of these "critics" would devote the energy they spend hating towards taking pictures maybe they would have a better disposition on life.

  • @SchwarzPoet
    @SchwarzPoet 5 днів тому +10

Hi, first of all I can't afford the camera at the moment for certain reasons that are not relevant here, but I have eyes in my head, listen carefully and can see when a brand new camera can cause a wave.
I am registered in several photo forums, on several Discord servers that are all about photography etc.
Before the camera came out, but before the first pictures and information were leaked, there was a huge outcry of indignation from many photo enthusiasts who realized that the camera didn't fit into their wish list instead of waiting for the first photos and testimonials.
Then came the first videos from photo influencers with meaningful results and the first negative voices died down. Then came the first results and testimonials from those who were not swayed by the clamor of outrage and the clamor flattened and flattened and flattened.
And now the first of the former screamers have also picked up this camera and are having the time of their lives, sometimes behaving like little children who got what they wrote on their wish list to Santa Claus for Christmas.
Of course, there are still a few incorrigible cholerics, but even they are becoming fewer and fewer.
So Pentax and Ricoh have done everything right and I wouldn't give a damn about the crap from the latest screamers.
    Greetings from Germany

For most camera nerds, this is a camera that defies logic. Most of us already have too many cameras, yet seeing this one makes you want to get one. But of all of the videos I have seen, nobody has done the most important: the smell test 😁
What does a new camera smell like? We all know the sweet machine-oil smell of the old ones. We know the disappointing smell of the 90's SLR's. But what about this one?

    • @cyrusrobert5339
      @cyrusrobert5339 4 дні тому

I have the Pentax 17 and funnily enough, the first thing I did when I unboxed it was do a smell test. And honestly, It just smells like a brand new digital camera or lens. There isn't a strong smell coming from it. There is a distinct plastic smell when you open the film door, but the smell mostly reminds me of a new Pentax lens. The Pentax 17 is made in Ricoh's Vietnam factory where the Pentax lenses and Ricoh GRiii are made, so the materials used in those are probably the same materials used in the 17...

Film cameras in good condition are becoming more expensive. I was on a trip to Europe and none of the stores had acceptable options. With how much used ‘very good’ condition cameras cost these days, It made me wish 35mm full frame cameras were still being made. I went for a Nikon FA with 50mm 1.4 nikkor and rear door and seals had to be replaced, which is what I did as soon as I got home, and I ended up spending 700 euros all in all including accessories, but wish I gave that up for a new-new camera in 2024.

I've shot a lot of the "pro" cameras that are popular (Leica R8, Nikon F3, Mamiya C330, Minolta Alpha 9 etc), and the thing I like about half frame is I don't feel the pressure to get the perfect image all the time. I of course have a great partner, but we both work full time and i feel bad jetting off to have fun and exiting family life. and of course its always hard to get the shot with a couple toddlers in toe. Just curious how you manage family life, and work and sunny 16 and all the travel. and maybe if you have any tips :)

Very interesting. Does the P17 resist dust and rain?

Loved the flash shot by the fountain!
I wish they went with a film window on the back, I tend to forget what I loaded with 36 shots, neverind 72 😅
But I'm a fan, will definitely get one in the future.

You can put the cardboard endpiece of the film box into a slot on the back of the camera I believe, something I do with my medium format cameras always so it's routine for me.

@@oudviola Sure, sure, I just don't always have an appropriate box with me when starting a roll - for example when traveling - I leave the boxes off so the film takes up less space. But that's my fault for not being organized (the forgetting part, I mean).
The window seems like a curious omission, but it's not like it's a dealbreaker 😀
      Still is just a nitpick,

You're the one reviewer who got the best shots from this camera I've seen, by far.

    Love your videos!!!
Do you just leave your camera set up on the side of the road when you drive your car by it? Then go back and get it? Or is someone helping you?
