if you have any more examples of this lick post them here in the comments I'd love to hear and ik this lick is far from exclusive to video games, it's a semi common device in both classical and jazz vocabulary, it just really reminds me of vgm and is comedically ubiquitous in vgm
off the top off my head, some others are: battle torna (xenoblade) lightning’s theme (ffxiii) shevat, the wind is calling (xenogears) i know there are a few songs from omori that use it - the battle theme for sweetheart’s castle is one of them oh, i know there are more, but this is all i can remember for now
is it really though? would it really be a coincidence that all of a sudden after chrono trigger, a bunch of video games of the same genre started using this specific lick?
@@pootmcgoot5458 Yeah, for example, I recently learned that Hirokazu Tanaka not only composed music for the Metroid and Mother series (and many other games) but also became president of Creatures Inc and composed an enormous amount of the japanese songs for the Pokémon anime, including the first opening and ending themes among many others.
It's just one of those things that you naturally hear in JRPG music and then pick up on. Just like IVmaj7b5 or Maj7#11 in some famous Japanese music. Or IV-V (with or without extensions) back n forth in VN's. Or a good favorite of mine, substituting V with it's 3rd inversion, V42. IV-V-(iii)-vi is very common in some Japanese anime and RPGs. But going V-V42 sounds VERY Japanese to me for some reason. Anybody got anymore? I love learning stuff in this style.

Wow can't believe Mario 3 references Chrono Trigger, clearly real evidence of time travel
This is the best comment under any UA-cam video
SO YOU’RE TELLING ME ALL THIS TIME I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO THE SAME LICK THINKING I’VE GONE CRAZY WHEN I ACTUALLY WASN’T?!
There is a reason why I love the dragonspiral tower theme: It reminds me of one of my most favorite games, Chrono Trigger. :D
Dragonspiral theme was inspired by secret of the forest so yeah lol

@@legalmel people tend to forget how hyper internconnected the japanse are when it comes to entertainment

You can find a similar lick on Alec's Log House (and all the other songs that use that leimotif) from Mother 3
Why are those 5 notes so good at evoking so much emotion
Ah, the old Mitsuda Lick. Shoutouts to dante's video on it from way back, that was the first I'd heard of it
it's in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney - Cross-examination Allegro (2007) too!!
Everywhere in touhou and I've heard it at least once in every eroge I've ever played
Interesting how a decent portion of it comes from games that are RPGs..... or maybe it's to be expected hahahaha
I THINK Tower of Death from Dragon Quest 5 uses it too
I believe snowy in undertale also uses it
so sick❤
