- Erik Anders Lang heads to Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Los Angeles and shares a shot by shot account of his round at his favorite course in LA. Designed by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and golf writer, Geoff Shackelford, Rustic Canyon was once voted the number 1 "Best Value Golf In The USA" by GOLF Magazine, as well as being in the "Top 50 Best Public Courses in America" according to Golf Digest. Erik describes in detail each hole at Rustic Canyon and all of the characteristics that make the course so special. EAL goes into great detail what his thought process is behind each shot and also tries to implement his best course strategy to shoot as low a score as he can. I don't think I've seen a white shot tracer before - that's cool. As much as I like fancy cinematic edits and stories, a pure course vlog is always enjoyable. Loved seeing your round shot by shot.

No one utilizes the huge, open fairway to the left on 7. Hit about a 260-70 shot and you'll be in a whole new world with about 100 yards in and looking down at the whole green. Makes even the toughest pins on this tough (redesigned after a flood) green more accessible. My home course, thanks for covering it :)

This course vlog confirms everything I tried to explain to people in the comments on your Break 90 series
Erik's 4-8 handicap is most likely from the men's tees which carry statistics close to 6400-6800 yds and 120-130 slope. This course, Rustic Canyon, is 6634 and 128 from the blues which Erik said he often chooses to play from and only 7000/133 from the blacks which he played in this video. That is nothing compared to championship tees at a professional event with stats around 7400 yds and 150 slope. This extra yardage will add upwards of 5 strokes and every 10 slope rating will add upwards of 5 strokes as well. The slope rating includes things like rough height, bunker difficulty, green speed and slope, etc... Thus you can take his 75-78 average and add 15+ strokes to it, so breaking 90 is a well set goal for Erik especially at a Major's layout.
I used to play in college and when I would take a friend who says they're a 5 handicap and put them on the championship tees with me, tempers usually flared cause they couldn't break 85 and that's on a course that isn't even tournament prepped. That's why I hate comments knocking Erik for poor play in those videos cause I would bet you they've never experienced a course even close to the same difficulty.
Keep up the good work and I hope you do a lot more course vlogs while the PGA season is down.

Like the show EAL. I'm in Poland and playing at 35 degrees is still fun while the season lasts. Once ended "Every shot . . . " will be a welcome way to spend the winter.

It’s really strange. With some of your clubs, we are the same distance. But sometimes you seem to hit a full club less than I would for the same distance. Any idea what your swing speed is? I m guessing when you swing ‘easy’ is when your distance matches mine. FOr 130 yards, I’m 9i . Or very hard PW for example. Kind of what you had not he 8th. But then suddenly you try to hit a 5W 250 years. Which is a huge distance. How much roll is that getting...
Hi Erik, I like the new commentary. Maybe a little bit of background appropriate music would enhance the Vlog, however I love the 'Raw' perspective you are bringing to your game in this COVID era.
Im a 15 hc but i cannot recommend this course enough. So much fun and gotta strategize differently since its links style and its only like $70 riding

Rustic was my home course for years. It’s HARD if you don’t have local knowledge.
Very much enjoyed the format! Know it wasn't he result you were looking for, but the swing looks great. I like the LPGA swing thought. I don't live far from Atlantic City and I go see the Shoprite as often as I can. I always have good tempo after watching them. Sadly, it never lasts.

Love your course vlogs, I have played at Rustic Canyon many times. If you get the chance come up to Lake Tahoe and play Old Greenwood. It’s a gorgeous but hard course.

It's really great to see how a good, single-handicapped player tries to manage the course and the mishits which every one eventually has - especially with the comment what your plan was before every shot... You guys are lucky to be allowed to play in groups of four and not only two.

It's worth it! It's a long drive but the course is excellent and a good value if you get it on a weekday,

Interesting sound from the SIM Max driver - sounds like you are topping it but the shots are always nice. I have a SIM 3 wood and the sound is not bad however some shots it sounds a little "solid" and sounds like I broke or cracked something in the head, but its always fine.

Big fan of the channel and SO excited to see the every shot course vlog content makes its way to your page. This was awesome and look forward to future episodes! Curious if you’ve thought about, in addition to the shot tracer, an icon on the overhead graphic of the hole to show where your ball ended up on tee shots and approach shots? Or maybe an indicator of where the flag stick is to point out your intended aim? Either way this was great stuff!
Great video! The adventure at Rustic doesn't start until you reach those greens. I have gone to Rustic many times feeling great about my game only to leave that place wondering if I know how to play golf anymore.
Just a quick tip. You have great rotation and a pretty solid swing, but your arms get way to far behind you (this is why you hit blocks and draws) if you kept your hands a little more in front of your chest half way through the swing and work toward higher hands at the top you will have tighter dispersion, hit it a touch further, and shoot lower scores. Good luck!
