I've used them for the past year and a half and really like them. I can still hear well with them in. I try to keep the extra cord in my helmet so it doesn't catch on anything (that happened once when I got too close to a bush on the bank).

I have advanced exostosis from cold weather paddling up here in PA. Water doesnt even need to be that cold to cause it... And its only a matter of time of exposure before it happens. Wear the damn earplugs!! The surgery is pretty invasive and has to be done in two sessions so you can still hear out of your other ear during recovery. Im not looking forward to it. My hearing is horrible and if i get eater in my ear it doesn't drain and I'm pretty much guaranteed an external ear infection (swimmers ear).
For ear plugs I've had the doc's which work well if they fit you well (have to try the fit kit) but currently just using disposable silicone type swimmers use. May give these a try!

Exactly and I had a pair of docs for awhile then lost them and got these thinking I would use the pod and keep up with them better and never looked back zero water in on my ears

I’ve been wearing these for a few years now and really like them. I feel like with time I actually got better at hearing people talk to me despite the fact that they do cut off some sound. I actually like that they muffle the sound of intense whitewater as it makes things less intimidating for me, haha.
They don’t keep my ears 100% dry, but my main goal is just to keep water from repeatedly splashing into my ear and causing bone growth.*
I do not use the cord/leash, as I find it transfers noises up into the earplugs (kind of like earbud wires being tapped), which bothers me. I did lose one once, and had to but another pair, but I generally do pretty well, and I made a little custom pouch in my pfd where I keep them any time they aren’t in my ears.
I also swapped the colors so one has a red insert with blue earpiece and vice-versa, that way both have some red on them to help find them if I ever drop them. And as for color, as others have pointed out elsewhere, they DEFINITELY made left and right the wrong colors. Red should be right bc they both start with R, and blue should be left since blue has the letter “L” in it (unlike Red). Plus, to my mind anyway, right is dominant over left, and red is a more dominant color than blue. 🤷🏼‍♂️
*For anyone who hasn’t seen Boyd Ruppelt’s excellent Send School video on the topic of Exostoses (Surfer’s Ear), I’d highly recommend you check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/SVbvWBb0Vws/v-deo.htmlsi=4y2OGonr8-G0Pc8i

Great feedback Kevin yeah the only ones I recommend is these and docs for anyone on a budget and avoid the cheap knockoffs

These work great and are highly recommend as you can hear the river / people. A surgeon advised if I didn't keep my ears dry when paddling then the only option was to get both sides drilled (water gets trapped behind the bone growth / ear drum and is hard to treat with antibiotics when they do get infected). I never boat without them now and they seem to last if you look after them.

I was diagnosed with exostosis years ago and the doc advised using foam ear plugs. Though they work, it does muffle the yelling and screaming from others at me (sometimes a blessing) and ambient sounds. I don't wear them as much as I should because of my age related hearing loss, but have wondered if Surf Ears, and the like, really do work. Seems they are becoming more popular. Time to check it out.

I use ear plugs all the time either my surfears or my custom ear plugs. Prevents against surfers ear, infections (water I paddle in is bad) and protects against hearing loss in loud rapids. I tie mine to my helmet and they live on there.

    • @WadeHarrison
      @WadeHarrison  Рік тому +2

Oh how much did custom ear plugs cost?

@@WadeHarrison I’m in the UK but, around £85 most companies are around that. Well worth it.
I have a skin condition psoriasis which can build up in my ear where the surfears sit whilst the custom ones just fit and don’t cause too much of an issue.

I don’t go on the water without them - I’ve already had two ear infections this year…not worth risking. Warm water is as bad - more bacteria.

@@WadeHarrison wow, I seen Boyd’s video about his surgery and it did not look fun. Thanks for heads up. I’m going to start using them all the time now, small price to pay for something that could end up costing you more money in the future or even your hearing.

I bought those for play boating… I am not satisfied because water comes in even with the biggest gel plug. It feels like an amount of over gets in, warms up and stay there… a bit like the wetsuit principle… It might be my ear’s shape but if you’re saying no water come in at all… I need to get something else… thanks

Since I can't hear very well anyway. Or as my wife says, I don't listen. And my ears produce a lot of wax. It's probably too late for me.
