I may be incredibly biased, but I feel so blessed to have been a child of the 60's and 70's. This music is timeless.
This was a Top 10 hit in England & Australia & John Peel was a prominent supporter. They are a legendary band in England.
Americans and Canadians should be very angry with their Radio Stations and Record Companies for not supporting or promoting the best and greatest Rock Band in history.

Back in the late 70s in a house across the street from us bikers move in great friendly people every time they had a party this one girl would play this song and sing it for what seemed like hours great entertainment the good old days. Peace out.

Loved the chair dancing. This song was one of my earliest 45rpm purchases. Until you mentioned it, I never noticed the similarities to Roadhouse Blues. In 1977 Status Quo put out a double disc live album with Roll Over Lay Down and Roadhouse Blues, and which includes other great tracks such as Rain, Don't Waste My Time, and Caroline.

What a great band. People say that the later music is worthless, but I beg to differ. They had some great music later in their career and even the last few years, there's been some worthy stuff.

Good review. ROLD originally released on the UK no’1 album Helloin1973. Later as a Live EP single in 1975, reaching no’9 (UK). Quo are influenced by The Doors, in fact they do a brilliant version of Roadhouse Blues on their1972 album Piledriver. Both ROLD & Roadhouse Blues are even better Live! Like Skyhooks and Sherbet they fitted the 1970's rock and glam scene perfectly. I was a child then but this is type of music you remember hearing from people five to ten years older than you. So it very familiar song before I was really consciously choosing music to listen to myself. Think they played this at some set at Live Aid when I was a teenager and was real crowd pleaser then. But yeah, I do not remember anything from them in the 1980's myself apart from the Live Aid concert. Some bands just fit a perfect time period and their name as a band I associate with 1970's rock perfectly.
In the early 80's a parody comedy Band called The Hee Bee Gee Bees released an album of songs that made fun of some very famous groups and artists.
Their first single was "Meaningless Songs (in Very High Voices)" by the Hee Bee Gee Bees, a parody of the Bee Gees. The 'band' consisted of the three Cribb (Gibb) brothers; Garry (Barry), Norris (Maurice) and Dobbin (Robin), performed respectively by Deayton, Fenton Stevens, and Pope. It was written by Pope and Richard Curtis, released by Original Records in 1980, reached number two in the Australian singles chart and made an appearance on the UK Indie Charts.
Two albums were subsequently released under the Hee Bee Gee Bees name, featuring parodies of various pop groups that had originally been featured on Radio Active. Tracks included parodies of Supertramp ("Scatological Song" by Supertrash), Michael Jackson ("Up the Wall" by Jack Michaelson), Status Quo ("Boring Song" by Status Quid), The Police ("Too Depressed to Commit Suicide" by The PeeCees), David Bowie ("Quite Ahead of My Time" by David Bowwow), Gary Numan ("Are Trains Electric?" by Gary Inhuman) and others.........
Their 1973 album "Hello" debuted at #1 in the UK and Charted in numerous regions.

A live version of "Roll Over Lay Down" appeared on a three-track EP released in May 1975, which reached No. 9 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 2 on the Australian Singles Chart.
No they can still rock hard when they are live. checkout Donnington park 2014 Live. I have been following Quo since around 1975 and still go see them Live. They still rock right upto the covid lockdown. They are due to start touring again in a few weeks. Love them. Unfortuneatly we lost Rick and Alan two of the original members but life goes on.
Bassist Alan Lancaster formed an Aussie band called The Bombers. Get it? Lancaster bombers from WWII. Cool name.
Hey Chris, as a lifelong Quo fan (I first saw them live when I was 11 in 1978) I agree that they were at their best in the 70s. They have so many great songs I could recommend, but some of my favourites are Big Fat Mama, Just Take Me/Is There a Better Way, Rain, and if you want to hear them do a wicked cover - Roadhouse Blues.
Francis Rossi said hearing Roadhouse Blues in a club was the moment they decided to move away from their psychedelic sound to become a rock band.
Well, by 1969 you can hear the transition from Psych Rock to Harder Rock and in 1970 Status Quo had released the hard edged 'Stoner' Rock song "In My Chair" and the 'Boogie' Rock song "Down the Dustpipe" which were both big Hit songs.
"Down the Dustpipe" was on 20 Red Hot Hits 1970 in Australia.
That song changed my life forever.
It's just a coincidence that "Roadhouse Blues" was released around the same time.
Though it's true that QUO were in a Nightclub when they heard "Roadhouse Blues" and Rick Parfitt said "Ooooh, we'll have some of that"
Status Quo became the most creative and inventive Rock Band in history.
QUO fans call them the Greatest Rock Band of all time - because they are.
Francis Rossi destroyed the Band by playing 'softer' Rock in the early 80's, which Alan and John didn't like, so they left.
The build-up back to full speed after the quiet section and into the last verse is goosebump-inducing. One of the great sections in all of rock. And don’t forget the drummer! John Coghlan’s drumming on this, especially the last minute or so, is relentless.
Nice Reaction. The, 'Hello!', album from 1973, is arguably one of their best albums, and has many great tracks on it. This particular one is the opener, and what an opener! Of course, their live renditions of this particular song are legendary! Fun fact: the single release of this song occurred 2 years later as a live EP, and yet, when the song featured on their first proper compilation album, (called, '12 Gold Bars'), in 1980, they used this album version. I guess it was their way of promoting this album. As I said, there's plenty of other great tracks to react to just on this one album. 'Little Blue-eyed Lady', 'Caroline', 'Softer Ride', and, 'Forty-five Hundred Times.'
'Slow train', is another great track of theirs. The album version is a must!

Quo still are touring and sound great live if you watch any of their song live at Donington 2014 you can see how they are loved by the crowd ,I would try “Big Fat Mama “, “Paper Plane” ,Whatever You Want” ,Rocking all over the World “or even do “Caroline” again as it is live ,these songs are all from the 70s so it won’t up set the purists .They’re is a reason why they are one of the best bands live ,and still loved today .Cheers .😊
Great to hear some Quo - 'heads down, no nonsense boogie'! I was a fan during my early teens and still have a soft spot for them, they are quite rightly imo regarded as a British rock institution. Their cover of 'Roadhouse Blues' is one of my favourites from their brilliant 'Piledriver' album, along with 'Big fat mama', 'Paper Plane' and 'All the reasons' (for their softer side). Cheers

I saw them twice in the 2007 they still had that energy. Having said that not the same without Spud and Alan. John now lives on the edge of the Cotswolds and is starting a jazz version of early Quo songs.

Francis Rossi has said he wrote this song about one time when he returned home from a gig in the early hours of the morning, he asked his wife to roll over in the bed to make room for him to get into it.
When reviewing Status Quo try to get the live versions as there far better than the studio ones.

This a great album. You should check out a live version of Roll Over Lay Down on video from the 70s to the early 80s. When I first saw them this was early in the setlist, second I think, I was in the Balcony at Hammersmith Odeon (London) and the balcony was moving under your feet. The live album from 1977 is brilliant. They do a great cover of Roadhouse Blues on Piledriver but the version on the live album is better.
Forty Five Hundred Times from the same album has some great changes of pace, you might want to checkout Milk and Alcohol by Doctor Feelgood a well known pub rock band over here from the 70s, more up to date possibly Seasick Steves original appearance on Jools Hollands show with Dog House Blues he is an American not really known of over there but quite big here now having appeared at Glastonbury on the main stage, he is quite eccentric and uses some interesting home made instrument's his idea of having made it was to own a John Deere tractor.
Despite the naughty sounding title, the song is actually about Francis Rossi coming home late and his wife leaving him a note to sleep on the couch. He goes upstairs to go to bed and tells her to roll over and let him in the bed!

There's a lot of ex-Countdown kids on here and some of them know The Chantoozies personally. Better to include them than not. And they're not too bad on the eye either. 4 is a stretch, but I think it's worth it because those four versions cover four genres. Early 70's rock, late 80's Aussie pub rock, annoying dance-pop, and 90's Madchester.

The Status Quid video is a parody of Quo by a comedy band called the Heebee Geebees. It's called boring song
QUO fans are not surprised that American Reactors are liking QUO songs, because they are listening to the Best and Greatest Rock Band in history, up until the early 80's when the Drummer - Coghlan and Bass/Vocalist - Lancaster left due to music differences.
Rossi's egomania drove John and Alan out of the Band they'd been in for 20 plus years.
Spinal Tap could've written it into their movie.
Please listen to then react to the Status quo ballads, Lonely man, A Year, Blue for you, All the reasons. Quo were way more than 3 chords, many of the album tracks are brilliant if not released. Enjoy.

Yeah after 81 went softer and more commercial. Francis Rossi engineered the exit of the bassist and drummer, and changed the band's direction.
