I had a good time out there on the Kiez! A lot of you guys showed me around during my time there and I had the opportunity to learn a WHOLE lot about the Reeperbahn! I’ll definitely be back for sure! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention…. Yall know how to PARTY omg! I haven’t partied that hard since the Gamescom afterparties! 🤣 I tried to edit this video in a way UA-cam wouldn’t fry me btw, so hopefully you guys still enjoy 😉! There’s still SO much I’ve done that I have to show you, such as: The Miniatur Wunderland 😍😍😍

What makes me most wonder about your video is that there's no beep sound censoring "bad words", like a lot of German creators do. And especially with a topic like that there would be a lot of words.
I really enjoy your views and your well chosen words so you don't have to censor them. 😂

Well, you presented that in such a neutral, not judging, informative, documenting way. This should be considered by YTs AI :)
And in any city in any country you can find a drunken fool who wants to fight or show his knife. That does not really make a city dangerous.

There are loads of streets like that even bigger in other cities, in Duisburg, Frankfurt, Bochum, Mannheim and so on. But people who really wants to have a good time go to one of the famous FKK. These are like clubs, not "street based", more like a disco and it is not even much more expansive. For example FKK Sharks in Darmstadt near Frankfurt or FKK Artemis in Berlin.

Even the Nazis couldn't close down the Reeperbahn district. It has its traditional maritime culture where sailors disembarked and had fun. Originally, the Reeperbahn was the street of the ropemakers.

If I had to describe it: the Reeperbahn is more the wild, crazy, party center of Hamburg, while Sternschanze (the street that directly fallows) has more of the hipster bar culture, perfect for partying and eating. 😊 I was never much of a party animal (though I went to a few reeeeeally awesome dance clubs on the RB), so I always preferred the Sternschanze personally. You still get the whole party vibe, but more chill, and less of the craziness. 😂

It's complicated, sometimes you can do this with business registration. But there are also gray areas where illegal people with pimps nearby like to do business with drug dealers. The police are nearby but can't catch everyone. And in casinos it is also legal but it is suspected that money is being laundered illegally in some of them.

I really don't think about prostitution. I know it's a thing and it's legal in Germany but outside of seeing one of the brothels near me from time to time I don't have it on my mind, it's regulated and that's reason enough for me to be okay with it existing here. ofc any forced SW is just horrible but as long as everysthing is between consenting adults I don't see a reason why SW shouldn't be legal

The Kiez and the Reeperbahn is special for sure - even for people living in other parts of Hambug or Berlin. And while it certainly is very upfront and explicit in certain ways the Reeperbahn itself is way more about partying than prostitution.
Is more dangerous than other areas in germany ? With so many drunk folk around it is only natural that it is considered more dangrous than some small town in a rural area of germany. However, if you are rather into deescalation instead of confronting drunkards, club security or other people in general and keep civil with all the folk you meet it is not more dangerous compared to the nightlife areas in Berlin, Cologne, Munich or Vienna. Compared to (famous) spots in eastern europe like Belgrad or even the US where you can meet all kind of folk you can not know how they might react to even harmless hings.
In regard to prostitution I think it is not so much the question whether you like it or not, but rather if you belive that it can be effectively removed from a society or not. If you look all over the world I think it obvious that prostitution can not be removed - neither in the US nor in even more restricted countries with even harsher laws. If you accept this as a fact I think it more sensible to decriminalize sexworkers and give them as safe an enviroment to work in as possible. And while you won't be able to get rid of illegal stuff like pimping completely, the situation in germany is way better compared to the US where many prostitutes are forced in illegal structures like gangs or pimps just for their own protection (it would be even worse and more dangerous without one).

  • @fex2911
    @fex2911 9 місяців тому +401

Since prostitution is legal in Germany, you can find a Red Light District in any bigger city, maybe not as famous as the Reeperbahn, but it's there, believe me. Even a city like Nueremberg in the so-called conservative state of Bavaria has Die Mauer (the wall), and it's within the city limit, not somewhere hidden away (as you admire the restored city wall, you can admire the shopping windows with women waiting for customers, just like the Reeperbahn). Prostitutes pay taxes, and have to adhere to certain rules, like regular doctor visits etc. But of course, this does not mean that there is not a dark, brutal and illegal side of women being forced by gangs or pimps into commercial sex.

I got lost at the Reeperbahn once when I was around 18 years old, so I went to ask a young man talking to a woman for directions. What I didn't realise was that they were in the middle of negotiating a price. Anyway, The man gave me directions, the lady disagreed and told me about a shortcut, they started arguing a bit about which way was faster and I eventually ended up with some solid instructions and they continued their business.

I grew up and went to university in Hamburg, so I spent many a party night on and around the Reeperbahn. I have always found it interesting how different cultures co-exist in that district. There are legal sex businesses and their customers, there's the young party people and their clubs and bars, there are theaters and musical shows, nice restaurants, even "normal" people living there and going about their quite average life, and, unfortunately, there is the dark side with drugs, human trafficking, violence, any kind of crime really - and all of that can be found in one block, sometimes within a few squaremeters. It truly is a different world.

Yes, I get it that you dislike the "no women allowed" and I agree. But that was put in by the women working on the Herbertstrasse, not men. If you want to experience a very colorful language (if you know what I mean) then enter the Herbertstrasse as a woman once the pedestrian gates are open, while openly carrying a camera or phone in the typical filming stance. The women sitting in the windows will be very 'creative' with their expletives thrown at you. With the men looking on uncomfortably.
Little tip: if you do want a little look-see into the Herbertstrasse book a city tourist bus tour on a double-decker bus. From the upper floor you may catch a glimpse what's going on in there.

wouldn't consider that other cities have smaller red light districts, only less popular. Practically the whole central station borough is a huge red light zone with not only one "Herbertstrasse", but many of them. Its just less "touristy".

As a Dutchman, legal prostitution isn't very strange to me. We have legal prostitution all throughout the country. The Amsterdam Red Light District is most well known, but really it's just a street with girls in the windows. I think it's not very good to have it as a tourist attraction, because foreigners often are not used to it and are used to seeing sex workers as objects and they are more likely to treat the girls with disrespect or under the influence. Locals are used to it and just see the girls as people who do their job and locals are much more respectful. So I think it's fine to have these liberties, but you also have to be mature enough to handle these liberties and most who didnt grow up with it aren't. So its good to have these areas be secluded imo.

I love the most about the Reeperbahn area the music clubs because I am deep in metal gigs. I always go alone, I never feel unsafe as a woman there. It won't go away just because it's illegal and the girls will be much better off if they can pay taxes and have normal rights in society. Really nice, that you mentioned the problem that subcultures getting destroyed by „usual“ tourists! 👍
It’s really a problem.. 15-20 years ago the Reeperbahn was an completely other district. It was less dangerous, people weren’t sooo drunken, the diversity of clubs has been much, much (much!) more higher - much more different types of music (today every club is just for drinking alcohol as cheap as possible, music is mostly only boring chart-top-10-music, an so on..) - nowadays the Reeperbahn is the second „Ballermann“ (district in Mallorca where young people only have 1 goal: get drunken as fast as possible. => 24/7).
It’s really important to save the sub culture, otherwise the world will get more and more unique - without any surprises and differences!

That district has a lot of similarities with Hamburg's Reeperbahn. I can confirm what most people already mentioned. Prostitution is legal and quite strictly regulated (social security, paying taxes etc). In all those years I never felt unsafe but saw the most hilarious situations.

Multiple hundreds of euro...they then took our ID’s and we said we gone get money...and just drove off. My friend next days went to buy a sign with a bulldog on it saying “dangerous dog inside” in hopes this will discourage any unwelcome “visitors” if they choose to collect the money from
Him 😅. Another time a friend of us got drugged I an establishment and passed out in one of their rooms. My friend then went in their full berserk, got him out of there while a dude with a knife tried to fight him. My friend gladly went totally confident and said “put this away or it’s time to dance” and gladly he made it out alive. Many more stories could be told...but dem iz for another time, Irie! 😂

in Germany it´s not called a fussball table, we call it a Kickertisch... kicker being self explanitory means the same as in english and tisch meaning table...as for the legal brothels in Germany, well i do´nt care to partake in such activities myself and never did...but them being legal has it´s positive sides the woman have the same rights as in every other job and are health insured wich is a bonus for both sides since healthy women means healthy customers if you know what i mean...also it does´nt eliminate but certainly reduces illegall activities...and honestly i think these women are doing the public a great service by offering there services legally to all those horny men, then we all know that s*xually frustrated men are capable of some pretty shady sh*t if they don´t get what they want...so in my opinion this service being legal helps reduce s*x crimes on women a little bit at least...so i guess long story short the worlds oldest business model as wie like to call it has its justification.

Great video, James! Well, as prostitution is legal in Germany, its quite a normal thing for us. That doesn't mean every men goes there but it really isn't anything surprising or special (for Germans). And yeah, it s better to walk through the Reeperbahn not full drunk as there are quite some situations which could happen. Also, never get in an argument with some of the sxx shops or bars as they are often owned by Hells Angles and other organizations. Either way, thx for sharing your perspective on it. Its super interesting to watch you experiencing stuff!

Just a few tips... "Kiez" is a general word for "neighborhood," especially in Northern Germany - you'll hear it used for neighborhoods other than those around the Reeperbahn. Foosball is "Tischkicker." :) Sex tourism and legal prostitution is a big thing in Germany. The world's largest brothel is in Cologne. Prostitution is a big deal, even out in the country. On a rideshare through the north once, a driver pointed out a number of old campers parked along the roadside that were likely being used by sex workers providing services farm workers. Human trafficking is also a huge deal. I live in a border town in the south and my understanding is that the border police mostly deals with human trafficking. A lot of doctors are very conservative as well. For example, despite the fact that there is this much human trafficking, it is very difficult to get medications like PrEP (there is a university-affiliated hospital in my town but the closest doctor who prescribes PrEP is an hour away!). In my opinion, this is due to conservative Catholic beliefs in the region. Interestingly enough, from Bavaria, there are a few border towns in Austria and the Czech Republic where almost as soon as you cross the border, there are tons of strip clubs - but there aren't any on the German side of the border.

That is not correct. "Kiez" does mean neighbourhood in other cities, especially in Berlin. But in Hamburg Kiez exclusively refers to the area around the Reeperbahn.

    • @xaverlustig3581

@@u.p.1038The word Kiez is Slavic. Its origin is in the North Eastern part of Germany where Slavic (Sorb) and German populations used to mix - still do to a limited extent. The word originally meant "Slavic suburb of a German town", some East German cities still have districts named "Kiez" or "Kietz" with this origin. Later it grew to mean "neighbourhood" in the general sense. In Hamburg it came to mean the name of one specific neighbourhood. Hamburg is just at the edge of the historical Slavic speaking region of Germany, that's how it probably got the word.

To me, it's very simple. The "constitution" (GG §12) says, that everybody is free to choose their profession and place of employment. So if somebody wants to be a s*x worker, who am I to tell them no?
On the other hand, trafficking exists and should be investigated and prosecuted to the full extend of the law.

  • @zanderalex2463

What do we think about the neighborhood and Herbertstrasse?
Well, the Kiez is more than just buying sex. It's also the place with the highest density of music clubs in Europe, several musicals and plenty of clubs to party in. Hence the huge Reeperbahn Festival in September. Prostitution for sale arose naturally from the sailors and was always important for their mental health ;-). If Hamburg's men and tourists can benefit from this in a respectable way today, I think that's a very good thing!
Incidentally, the cheap offers right next to the Davidswache (police station) are not serious. It's strange, but nobody really feels sorry for the clients.
    On the subject of safety:
Unlike in the rest of Hamburg (and Germany), you're not allowed to walk around with a bottle of beer on the street on the Reeperbahn. This has to do with the stricter conditions to keep the party-goers under control and is a direct result of a few excesses that have occurred there in recent years.
    By the way:
In two years on the Kiez, the Beatles grew up and learned to play properly. Today, there are still some friends of Paul, George, John and Ringo there who tell exciting stories. Some have their own bars.

Basically, there's not much to worry about when being on and around Reeperbahn in Hamburg. Prositution is a legal business here in Germany, almost like any other kind of business venture. There is illegal stuff going on, though, sadly, like forced prostitution or human trafficking of girls from other parts of this world (very poor countries). But mainly, our prostitutes (or sex-workers, as they would be called officially) are employees with many rights, like social security, and health insurance coverage, leave days, etc. They also pay taxes. Some work for themselves exclusively, some work for a club or bar, and some work with a pimp. It largely depends. Nothing fishy about it. I had been to the Reeperbahn a couple of times, I never was afraid there. Once my male companions had to leave me in the corner bar at the entrance to Herberstraße because as a woman I could not go with them. I sat in the bar in the dead of the night (around 2 or 3 pm) all by myself and had a great time watching people outdoors. No fears. Very amusing, and great random company of people coming into the bar or just passing by. My aunt and uncle used to live in Hamburg (they were very classy and well respected people) and when my parents visited (and I was but a little girl) they always went out to Reeperbahn for at least one night of their stay. Very common thing to do.

Unfortunately thats very misleading. Tourists should be careful with strip clubs, they are known to rip off naive ppl with overpriced drinks billing some hundred euros. They even introduced a law forcing them to put a price list at the entrance due to exessive bad press.
And keep your eyes open, all the police on the Reeperbahn and the ban of glas bottles are there for a reason. People on drugs can get very violent.
If you're a girl you should be wary of ppl trying to pour drugs into your drink to knock you out (which sadly is an issue all over europe nowadays).

You got to know that the Reeperbahn has a long tradition as an amusement area. Remember whats very close to the Reeperbahn: One of the biggest habours of Europe. Sailors from all over the world came here after long trips without any amusement and after their time of hard labour they had a lot of money too. So it was just logical what kind of business settled down here.

My paternal family is from Hamburg. I grew up close to Hannover but my extended family still lived in Hamburg. Reeperbahn & Co are just normal. I knew about it since I was a child, there were songs about it that were played in family-friendly evening shows, and, well, it was just a thing, like the harbor, Speicherstadt, Hamburger Dom, etc. Nobody in my average middle-class family made a big deal of it in any way.
As teenagers, my friends and I would visit my family and stay for a couple of days. We'd have breakfast with the adults, dinner, and sleep there. But during the day, we were on our own, for the first time when we were around 14. Back then, the rule was "You can go and visit the Reeperbahn, but only before you return to dinner." When we went to the Hamburger Dom in the evening, no Reeperbahn.
But as soon as we were 18, none of the adults cared. It was handled like sightseeing for adults. But even then, we'd also get warnings - the guys could check out the Herbertstraße but not the girls, don't buy expensive drinks, don't buy bottles, don't accept free drinks, plus a list of streets to avoid.
There are a couple of areas in Hamburg to better stay away from and they were often just one subway station or corner away from the normal areas or shopping districts.
So, that was just how it went - "Have fun, but remember to stay clear of certain streets."
My aunt and uncle also explained to us how to act when people approached us in a subway station - druggies, pickpockets, drunks...
It was just a normal thing to do and we never had any issues.
It's also funny how the family-friendly musicals are just a couple of minutes away from the Reeperbahn. Back in school, our music teachers would sometimes organize musical weekends and we always stayed in hotels at the fringe of the Reeperbahn (just a couple of meters away) because those were the cheapest. Even teachers didn't give a damn lol
It's really not a big deal and adults trusted us even as minors not to be stupid. Well, that was mostly related to crimes and violence, being exposed to a sex shop or prostitutes has never been a big worry. I guess it wasn't like we could have afforded their services anyway with our pocket money and the guys were too awkward anyway 😁
In fewer words, when I was a kid and then teen, the Reeperbahn was just another location, a tourist magnet, and a party zone with a specific theme. There wasn't anything scandalous about it. On the contrary, going there was a rite of passage, people from Hamburg would recommend it as a destination, and were as proud of it and its history as of any other famous location.
Change of topic: I appreciate the support of subcultures! Tourist destinations are all fine and good and there's no issue with visiting them, as long as the locations that give a town or city its identity aren't forgotten. To be honest, this was something that bothered me a bit with other cities. Yeah, those hip, trendy, fancy bistros that serve pizza in quirky cuts or coffee with the latest superfoods for 10,- Euro are all nice and dandy but those tours and recommendations looked like they were made to be Instagram friendly, and for people with new money, and not where the average youth/young adult hangs out to have a chill time. That's why I enjoyed this and the other two Hamburg videos. You got excellent guides who really introduce the city to you as most people experience it, be it as visitors or those who live there, and not just the Instagram/UA-cam-subculture.

Regarding "Pimping." The act of pimping is technically illegal in Germany though it still happens, of course, through more underhanded methods. The owners of the building are considered more caretakers or facility managers rather than straight-up pimps who take their share through usage fees of the rooms and the security of the building rather than through the services.
This law is also why "street hookers" are becoming less common due to the fact that, if they get interrogated by law enforcement, they'd have to provide proof that they're working independently.
In both cases there's of course, corruption involved from time to time.

I'm from Hamburg, and I met my boyfriend while he was working in a bar on Hamburger Berg (one of the side streets).
I haven't really been partying for about 8 years, I think, but the foosball table (we call it Kicker or Tischfußball :) is a staple on that street. All the Kneipen there have one.
Even then, the older folks complained that everything was changing, and they were right.
It used to be more traditional Kneipen with only a small area to dance. When I was there regularly, it had already changed to more space to dance in most bars and more modern music. They typically played alternative/rock music in the area instead of the EDM/charts/whatever on Reeperbahn or Große Freiheit in general.
The bar where we met has sadly closed down since. It moved a few streets over first but was already different then.
I grew up here and spent many nights in the area, but I've never been to any "popular" clubs, lol. The crowds of tourists and lines and entering fees always deterred me from trying to take a look.
The possibilities of barhopping are endless, though, and it has really spoiled me for when I moved and had to choose between like 3 destinations beforehand and then basically being stuck there for the rest of the night.
Also, I never saw more disgusting toilets anywhere else lmao, but it's all part of the experience. 😅

Technically the street is by law an open public road, and by law, also women and children are allowed there (de jure), but that is only in theory, in practice (de facto) I wouldn't advise women or children to go there, it's kind of an unwritten law that they're not allowed there.

Just a place with really cool small clubs, mingled with all the lewd business going on. It has changed in the last years, I have to admit. Before it was a "people are doing a lot of coke here" place, now it´s more like crack. Nevertheless, always a good place to visit, and really, when there´s trouble, it is between people who know each other. Große Freiheit has a little sister, Kleine Freiheit. The names of the streets have historical reasons.
In the past, Reeperbahn and Seilerstraße were straight lanes of a certain length for the production of ship's ropes and cables.
Große Freiheit belonged to the city Altona and was therefore part of Denmark. There were already religious, trade, and guild freedoms, which did not yet exist in Hamburg. For an annual fee, craftsmen could practice their trade there, free of their guilds.

Prostitution is very important for the society. Of course there are dark sides of it, like pimps or girltrading, but generaly it helps providing sexual assaults and is a job like any other one. In Germany and some other European countries there are even special sexworkers, paid by social organisations, who have sex with handicaped people, because sexuality is an important part of life for everybody.

You know, Hamburg is a big sea port, so there are a lot of foreign ships at any time, and where do you think those sailors usually go?

Fun little personal story: When I was 25 or so, my 3 girls and me went to the big musical hall on the Reeperbahn, all dressed up as you can imagine. We mingled with the partygoers - everything was cool. When we got there, a security guard searched our and confiscated a pepper spray from a friend of mine. Now, let me tell. you she is the reeeeeally nervous type, and she was freaking out a little bit, if she was going to get her pepper spray back by the end of the show when we were seated. Meanwhile, I was sitting there, nonplussed, because bringing something like pepper spray to the RB never even crossed my mind, I always felt so save. Then one of my other girls leaned over me to whisper to her, that "they didn't even find hers". I had to stifle a laughing fit so hard, I think I cried tears of silent laughter behind my palms! 😂 Soooo funny! Still one of my favorite memories!

I also recommend De Wallen in Amsterdam, where window prostitution reaches a completely different level.

Yeah but don't film the windows with the women there, like you did in Herbertstrasse, because that is seen as rude and might get you in serious trouble.

I'm from Hamburg, this was the first time I had a good look at the Herbert Straße. I once took a peek, but I was never interessted in this street. There is so much better to do. But it has some "shock" value :)
About security, it's the same in every major city. There is crime in certain parts but it is seldom as prominent as in Hamburg, with all the tourism.
I never had any problems with people, but you have to look out sometimes.

Prostitution was never illegal in Germany, or differently put only to the extent of sales contracts involving sex being null and void, neither party had recourse to the law to get it fulfilled. Hamburg in particular, as an international harbour city, always had a red light district and its own very specific culture and compact between sex workers and pimps, not based on coercion (which is a whole other 2-hour documentary on its own). The whole thing collapsed with the AIDS epidemic and pimps turning to coke dealing to make up for the loss of income, getting high on their own supply, a murder happen (unthinkable before, they fought out disagreements in the ring below the Ritze, with fists, as is proper), police moving in, alas leaving a power vacuum, the likes of Hell's Angels moved in, then prostitution became properly regulated and capitalism moved in. Figures the best way to make sure sex workers aren't mistreated is to allow them to have unions, to have them be able to call the police on a creep without risking their whole business by the police using the opportunity to arrest all their customers (as would happen in Scandinavia). Or have the youth office harass them by presuming they're unfit parents or something.
It's certainly not a job for everyone but ultimately that's true for very, very many jobs.

If you need a smooth soundtrack, check out "Udo Lindenberg - Reeperbahn 2011 feat. Jan Delay (What It's Like)".
Udo Lindenberg recorded this song first back in 1978 ... he's an Original and a german legend! Udo started his musical career in 1969 and is still active! In 2023 he was number 1 on the german single charts ... so 54 years (!) after his first release! *legend♥

Reeperbahn is a Bit too much , Like the big Clubs where you wait Like an hours to pay way too much much Money, to pay extra Drinks in a fully crowded room with Machos and their Girls. Is wild. Hamburger Berg ist more relaxed. You feel more comfortable there. And Hamburg ist Not the only one giving you the Ladys from the Red light district. Amsterdam ist doing that , too. And yeah Molotow IS a sad Thing. They had to move a couple of Times. Because of those Stories with Hotels and the Tourism stuff. I Like lange Reihe , Winterhude ( some parts) Falkensteiner Ufer, Stadtpark, the eastern Part in General. ITS totally underrated. There is a Metro Station called mümmelmannsberg and IT Looks Like you fall Back into a retro synthwave 80s bar/Club. So there a the little cool Things as well. But IT Takes time to find Out and discover the Hidden gems.

Being one of the largest port cities in Europe it shouldn't come as a surprise that there's prostitution. It has been that way for centuries. It's the same in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerpen, Marseille, Genua, Naples, ...
And if it doesn't depend on a port it's depending on military installations, centres for for trade and commerce, or ... (if you can't find a reason don't bother it's not really necessary)
