Without these guys there would be no Nirvana. Kurt said they were his biggest influence and for Smells Like Teen Spirit he said he was trying to make a pixies song.
This is so good, it's hard to find versions of them playing this live where he doesn't seem completely bored and burnt out from playing it. Plus the original bassist is sorely missed these days.
Forget that...this song sounds like it could have just been released in 2018. I was so surprised when I looked it up to see that it was released in my birth year, 1988, making it nearly 3 decades old. That's crazy. Simultaneously fitting for its time yet way ahead of its time.
Max Pax cuz the pixies were alternative before alternative was even a genre. Them and Jane's addiction probably the 2 most important pre alternative bands that influenced others
Considering the influence Pixies had on such big bands, they didn't get the attention they deserved. Like they influenced Nirvana, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and The Strokes. Such an amazing band
They were never underated. They were big back then, and then came back just as big. If you want underated bands of the early 90's go look up the albums of Chapterhouse, 5:30, or Spacemen 3 or the Stairs...Just a few of the lost classics (theres plenty more).
TeenageTortoise Yeah, I looked it up after I posted that because I'd always heard Black Francis. It took a little bit to find anything other than Black Francis but once I started looking at his solo work I found it.
the pixies are fantastic. I have a lot of wonderful memories with them. My late husband and I saw them in Spokane Washington. we drove from Missoula Mt. to see them. It was well worth it.....
Back in 1989 this song was played time and again by the girl living one floor below in the student housing. It made me get to know The Pixies. Saw them one week ago live in Amsterdam. The songs where Kim Deals plays a central role are the best.
The mark of a good band is how they sound live. There is nothing more disappointing then going to see a band and they sound horrible, letting you know the album you bought was all studio tweaking. The Pixies are one of those rare bands who sound better live than their records!
+madmick17 agree, a good band is better live than on record. but its not rare. there are a lot of those band out there acutally. people just dont know them, because they like the bad shit.
When they played this in Cardiff the crowd just took over,Singing the end "oooo"'s,over & over for about 5mins, The Band Applauded the crowd at the of it. Best.Show.Ever
Original Pinkbird Indeed, I can still enjoy the music today. It'd just be cool to meet them. on the positive side, there's still good music out there today.... hooray...ish
Only recently found this song last year and it is easily one of my favorite songs of all time. I really had no idea that this song came out so long ago. It sounds like something that came out in 2020. So much of the music today is inspired by the 80’s it’s crazy. But i love the taste gen z has evolved into being😍🥰🫶🏼
i woke up and went to go pee and i had this song in my head.wasn't the first time.i wish i would have known about this band earlier.i liked them from the first.🙂
N-n-now, here's a-a-a-a-a, here's a guy that if you give him a guitar, and he holds his fingers a certain way, and hits the strings a certain way, a song's going to come out!
I remember being here 1988. The 80s was amazing, best time of my life. I still wish i could go back, underrated song. My 15 year old daughter who is turning 16 soon she is a big fan since she heard it in the car. But this live will never be anything like this, i mean this live was amazing! 👏👌
Love the Pixies Where is my mind. Also would anyone know what Guild D50 year Frank Black is using based on the headstock. It looks like a Guild D50 made in New Hartford, but those weren't made till 2011. I could only think it's a 1964 to 1967 Guild D50
This is the Pixies at their unltimate best. I saw them in 1989 in Seattle when i was on acid and was blown away. They had great chemistry and stage precense back then. Of course not having any hair these days and getting older doesn't help much.
Kurt Cobain once primaturely left a concert in London to see The Pixies who played nearby. Btw. Cobain left a Nirvana concert ...
tmvideoproduktionen cool it's neat to imagine him watching one of their concerts.
Highly unprofessional, yet amazingly pure of him.
yeah he loved Pixies, He always said how he feared that Nirvana would be seen as ripping them off

Also there would be no Radiohead :)
And throw in Smashing Pumpkins in there.
Smells Like Teen Spirit is Bone Machine with the chords played in reverse order.
Smells Like Teen Spirit stole the riff from More Than A Feeling
Jai Greeves it’s actually different chords tho. Just similar
This is so good, it's hard to find versions of them playing this live where he doesn't seem completely bored and burnt out from playing it. Plus the original bassist is sorely missed these days.
Nobody does the Uuuuuh uuuuh like Kim ♥
True👌
Dont forget The Descendants
This is from the dvd they released. Saw them a few years back with their new bassist and she was fire.
One day I was scuba diving in the Caribbean and I realized I was living this song
This song made my whole life.

Deutscher Patriot 89 me three

Me five

this song sounds so much more end 90s than end 80s.
I've always thought that 😂
+Alice Wright you can hear that they inspired weezer, cranberries, Nirvana, bloodhound gang, etc.
even 2000s I would say

This song makes me want to violently fight with my imaginary friend.
yeah, great movie
excellent shadow box choice
nice one
nice originality

Outstanding performance of one of the best songs ever written, period.
Most underrated band ever.

Definitely an opinion. You’re biased. Listen to more music.

@Stix N' Stones
You just played yourself
I love this song. This is probably the best recorded live version out there. Frank's vocals on this is absolutely phenomenal.
Who's Frank?
lead singer
TeenageTortoise Yeah, I looked it up after I posted that because I'd always heard Black Francis. It took a little bit to find anything other than Black Francis but once I started looking at his solo work I found it.
His real name is Charles
I never knew this was an 80s song holy shit this has aged well😲😲😲😲😲
Always thought I was a early 2000’s track until few years ago i discovered the pixies was amazed when I found out what year it came out lol
I'm 30 now when we were 16 we based our band on The Pixies. They were the best times of my life. Thanks for the music.
How u doing man now
no gimmicks. no "image." just really great music!
the pixies are fantastic. I have a lot of wonderful memories with them.

One of my all-time favorite songs.
Real talent and no bullshit. Simply music. The 80´s were, without a doubt, the weirdest and most experimental decade for music.
Fully agree
100% correct 👍🏻
30 years later and this is still a life changing performance.
You can really hear how much Radiohead got their early sound from these guys. Best performance of this song I've heard, a masterclass!
2:58 omg.. when you tought it just couldn't get better!!! Love this song for over 30 years and will be listening to it 50 more

Real homegrown people singing and being themselves, their souls. Calling out to you
I heard this song for the first time in 2012 my mom played it in the car my life hasn’t been the same since
The reason you don't hear the crowd singing is they were busy kssing their loved ones
first time i heard this song, my 6th grade teacher was playing it in class and i’m still here 7 years later. timeless song
To me this was the Pixies at their best. I saw them 1989 in Seattle. What a show. I was on acid but it made the experience that much more intense.

I see comments like this on practically every concert video for any artist so I'm gonna assume it's not rare
don't forget the beatles in my opinion
I was born when this song came out and just sang it karaoke for the first time tonight. WOW. 🤙🏽
Why do other people keep trying? These guys won Rock and Roll
+Weedz420 check out the Kings of Leon cover. Rocks.
+TemperateWhispers thanks!!!
No they didn’t lol.
That is Chris Cornell's line about Pixies winning Alternatvie music.
And Sloan won it in Canada.

I can't get over how cool these guys were back then, I wish I was born earlier than 1997, 1969 would be a good year :)

I love his voice. I can’t put my finger on why I love how he sounds almost as if he’s frightened and yelling. It really works.
I actually love Black Francis' voice here. I still wish he sung it like this!!! So good!!!
Best live performance of this song. This song has aged so damn well.
people talk about Kim and she is brilliant but the whole band were so tight! drums and lead guitar also epic.
And the new bassist is just as good as Kim

Gen z parents were raised in the 80’s. Makes perfect sense that they grew up hearing 70’s and 80’s music
Back when you didn't have to be pretty..
Yeah. But Def Leppard tho
u still dont have to be someone else other than who u are , what do u feel about that ?
I think they're beautiful... eye of the beholder I guess...
This was the 80s, looks came before talent...
